On September 18, 2020, people gathered on the steps of the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC, singing songs like Amazing Grace. Some placed twinkling candles on the steps. Others left flowers and messages. They were there to mourn (哀悼)the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away at the age of 87.
Ginsburg was the second-ever female justice(法官)on the US Supreme Court, the most powerful court in the United States. She served in that position from 1993 until her death. During her long career, Justice Ginsburg fought for women's equality and human rights for everyone.
Because she was a woman, she had many barriers placed in her path by people who, at the time, felt that women should not have the same rights as men. When she attended Harvard Law School in 1956, she was only one of nine women in her class. The rest of the class--541 students-- were men. It wasn't that other women weren't smart or talented enough to get in, but because there was a tendency against women attending schools like Harvard Law, so many were turned away while similarly qualified men were accepted. Ginsburg also faced discrimination(歧视)because she was Jewish.
Ginsburg knew that men and women are equal. As a lawyer and later as a judge, she devoted her life to fighting for that principle.
One of her most famous rulings as a Supreme Court justice involved the Virginia Military Institute(VMI), which, in 1996, only allowed males to attend. Ginsburg wrote a ruling that persuaded the other justices that not allowing women into the institute was against the 14th Amendment (修正案), which explains that all people in US have equal rights. Today, about 10% of the students at VMI are female.
Ginsburg was so inspirational that people wrote books, movies and songs about her. Children went out for Halloween dressed as her, wearing the black justice robes and white collars and other neck pieces she often wore.
    24. What trouble did Ginsburg have in attending Harvard Law School?
    A. Competition with qualified men. B. Discrimination against females.
    C. Worry about her future career. D. Lack of talent.
    25. Which of the following can best describe Ginsburg?
    A. Influential and strong-willed. B. Qualified and creative.
    C. Generous and devoted. D. Ambitious and demanding.
    26. What can we learn from the text?
    A. The US Supreme Court never had female justices before Ginsburg.
    B. The percentage of females at VMI is higher than that of males.
    C. Ginsburg was the only Jewish female in the university.
    D. People honored Ginsburg in various ways.
    27. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Pursuit of Equality
    B. Fighting Discrimination Beyond All Price
    C. An American Hero Fighting for Gender Equality
    D. An Inspirational Justice Fighting Against Her Fate
    C
Parenting techniques may have long lasting consequences for behavior-even when it comes to dogs.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania studied the early development, parenting and the following performance of 98 puppies who underwent guide dog training. Dogs who received more independence and less support from their mothers were more likely to be successful in becoming a guide dog. The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Mom-pup interactions were used to define how highly involved the puppy's mothers were. Puppies raised with highly involved mothers were more likely to be released—or dropped out from the guide dog program—compared to those with less attentive mothers.
“Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing," said lead study researcher Emily Bray. Although the study couldn't definitely point to what was driving this effect," one possibility is that the dogs that are having overbearing (专横的) mothers are never given the chance to deal with small challenges on their own, and is harmful to their later behavior and outcome in their problem solving. Another possibility is that the puppies for whom the mothers are always around are also the most anxious or stressed," she explained.
“What I was happy about was that there is a study being done about early life experiences in dogs," another researcher Dolores Holle said. "If the mom is trying to protect her pups against small challenges, then they will not be suited for the big challenges."
The study included three breeds(品种): German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers. The puppies were followed from the first weeks of life for several years. Interestingly, Labrador retrievers tended to wash out from the program, while Golden retrievers tended to succeed.
As for whether the findings can be applied to human babies of so-called "helicopter parents," Bray was hesitant.
“I think people can draw parallels (相似之处), but I think you also have to be careful because they are different species," she said.
She added, "The nice thing about dogs is that they are a lot less complicated than humans."
    28. What makes successful guide dogs according to the study?
    A. Less attentive owners. B. More practical training.
    C. Less supportive mothers. D. More tense environment.
    29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The necessity of mom-pup interactions.
    B. Some characteristics of good guide dogs.
    C. The significance of high parental involvement.
    D. Potential causes of some puppies' poor performance.
    30. What can we know about Labrador retrievers in the study?
    A. They choose to stay. B. They fail to be qualified.
    C. They rise to challenges. D. They are easy to notice.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Parenting techniques can apply to guide dogs
    B. Guide dogs are less complicated than humans
    C. Researchers help raise public awareness of blind people
    D. A study is done about early life experiences of human babies
    D
Why can’t we stop longing for the good old days
People in many countries are longing for the good old days. But when exactly were the good old days? Podcaster Jason Feifer devoted an episode of his program to this question. The most popular answer seemed to be the 1950s, so Mr. Feifer asked historians whether Americans in that decade thought it was particularly pleasant. Definitely not. In the 1950s, American sociologists worried that rampant individualism was tearing the family apart. There were serious racial and class tensions, and everyone lived under the nuclear threat.
In fact, many in the 1950s thought that the good old days were to be found a generation earlier, in the 1920s. But in the 1920s, child psychologist John Watson warned that because of increasing divorce rates, the American family would soon no longer exist. Many people at the time idealized the Victor inn era, when families are strong and children respected their elders.
Why are human beings always so nostalgic(怀旧的)for past eras that seemed difficult and dangerous to those who lived through them? One possibility is that we know we survived past dangers, so they seem smaller now. But we can never be certain whether we will solve the problems we are facing today. Radio didn't ruin the younger generation, but maybe the smart phone will.
Another reason is that historical nostalgia is often colored by personal nostalgia. When were the good old days? Was it, by chance, the incredibly short period when you happened to be young? A U.S. Poll found that people born in the 1930s and 1940s thought the 1950s was America’s best decade, while those born in the 1960s and 1970s preferred the 1980s.
This kind of nostalgia has neurological roots. Researchers have found that we encode more memories during adolescence and early adulthood than any other period of our lives, and when we think about the past, this is the period we most often return to. Moreover, as we grow more distant from past events, we tend to remember them more positively.
Obviously, some things readily were better in the past. But our instinctive (本能的)nostalgia for the good old days can easily cheat us, with dangerous consequences. Longing for the past and fear of the future prevent the experiments and innovations that drive progress.
Vaccination, steam engines, railroads and electricity all met with strong resistance when they were first introduced. The point isn’t to show how silly previous generations were. The same kinds of anxieties have been expressed in our own time about innovations like the Internet, video games and stem-cell research.
And not all fears about the future are groundless. New technologies do result in accidents, they disturb traditional cultures and habits, and they destroy old jobs while creating new ones. But the only way to learn how to make the best use of new technologies and reduce risks is by trial and error. The future won’t be perfect, but neither were the good old days.
    32. The word “rampant” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________
    A. limited B. reasonable C. uncontrolled D. traditional
    33. According to the passage, the 1950s was a period of time ________.
    A. when American families still remained strong and children respected their elders
    B. that was believed by Americans born in the 1930s and the 1940s to be the best decade
    C. that saw a sharp increase in individualism and divorce rate in American society
    D. when radical and class tensions became serious but people no longer lived under the nuclear threat
    34. The good old days were usually the time when people were young because ________
① people have a better memory of adolescence and early adulthood.
② More dangerous things happen during their youth and they learned how to survive them.
③ The dangers in youth were smaller and easier for people to deal with.
④ people remember events in their youth more positively as time goes by.
    A. ①② B. ①③ C. ①④ D. ②④
    35. What can be inferred from the last three paragraphs?
    A. The current generation is not as silly as the previous generations.
    B. It is unwise to simply say no to any new inventions and technologies.
    C. People are constantly cheated by their instinctive nostalgia for the good old days.
    D. The Internet, video games and stem-cell research present great threats to humanity.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
    Filling in on Information
People now have access to more information than ever before thanks to the Internet. While there are clearly benefits of it, there are also unexpected effects. One in particular is information overload(超负荷), commonly referred to as “infobesity”. 36
Infobesity can be caused by many factors. For example, information from various sources can lead to infobesity. A search on a particular topic can bring hundreds of websites with a lot of information, and you may feel very upset due to the amount of information accessible. 37 Smart devices provide a person with information on the go, merely to stay updated. This often gets misused. As a result, people will load themselves with too much information.
38 They indicate that an over-exposure to information can cause people’s behavioural changes. It makes a person tired mentally and physically, directly leading to stress where the person is too tired to carry on any activity. In addition, infobesity is the enemy of good decisions. People can probably be at a loss in the face of many possibilities. 39
So, what can be done to reduce the effects of this condition? While there is no easy answer, one obvious step is to limit our sources of information. Sort the information we receive as important and unimportant, and try to only focus on things that really matter to us and on just one thing at a time. 40 And who knows?
Too much of anything is bad. This applies not only to the food one consumes, but also to the information that one receives. By taking a certain action, infobesity can be controlled at the first stage itself.

    A. Experts have shown some major effects of infobesity.
    B. This would give us more room to absorb information from sources.
    C. Being constantly connected to technology can also result in infobesity.
    D. It refers to a situation where there’s too much information on a given topic.
    E. We are sure about how certain types of information help us get to where we want to go.
    F. Since technology has got us into this mess, perhaps it will also present solutions in future.
    G. One example is that, for online shoppers, a purchase can be difficult with so many choices accessible.

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile car from his brother as a Christmas present.
On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a little boy, named Jack was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. “Is this your car, Mister?” he asked.
Paul nodded. “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was astounded. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you anything? Boy, I wish….” He hesitated.
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the little boy said jarred (使某人吃惊)Paul all the way down to his heels.
“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, “Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?”
    “Oh yes, I’d love that.”
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, “Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?” Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the little boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again.

    Paragraph 1:
Jack ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back with his little crippled brother. Jack sat him down on the bottom step, pointing to the car. “There the car is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs just now.” He told Buddy that Paul’s brother gave it to him for Christmas. And then Jack promised Buddy that some day he was going to give him one just like it. Jack asked Paul whether he would take his brother to have a ride. Paul nodded.
    Paragraph 2:
Paul got out and lifted Jack’s brother to the front seat of his car. The shining eyed Jack climbed in beside him, gently fastened the safety belt for Buddy and politely asked, “Mister, would you mind continuing driving around?” Deeply touched, Paul happily drove the car on the road again. That Christmas Eve, the three of them began a memorable holiday ride, which was the happiest time that Paul had ever spent, because he learned it is love that brings closeness, shortens distance, and beautifies the world.

    Text 1
M: Did you go to South Korea and China during the summer, Sara?
W: No, my father wanted to go to Europe. So we went to France instead. We’ll go to Asia next summer.
    Text 2
W: Hello Roger? This is Ann.
M: Oh, hi, Ann. How have you been? And how’s your new apartment working out?
W: Well, that’s what I’m calling about. You see, I just can’t stand Kitty any longer. Therefore, I’ve decided to look for a new place.
    Text 3
W: When would you like me to send those plans over to your office, Mr. Black?
M: It would be good if you could get them to me by Thursday afternoon, Ms. Barkley.
W: I think I can give them to you on Tuesday afternoon.
    Text 4
W: “I used to love walking down these streets. Now, it feels like I’m a stranger in a child’s dream somewhere! ”
M: All right, that’s a cut. Mandy, I love the emotion, but every time you say that last line, you look at the camera. OK, again from the top…
    Text 5
M: Excuse me! Don’t you know that you can turn right when the light is red? It’s just like being at a stop sign in that situation. You’re holding up traffic!
W: Oh, I’m sorry. The laws are different in Montana...

    Text 6
M: Good morning, Sue! How is your holiday? Did you enjoy it?
W: Yes, I had a great time. I went to Inner Mongolia with some of my friends. We went mountain climbing near Baotou, and we stayed in a tent at night and cooked meals over an open fire.
M: Sounds cool! Did you like the people there?
W: Yes, they were nice. We met some farmers and they invited us to have tea in their house.
    M: What an interesting experience!
    Text 7
    W: Donna Hoover speaking.
M: Dr. Hoover, my name is Edgar Bush. My roommate, John, is in your art history class. Uh..., Art History 502?
    W: Yes.
M: Well, he is sick and won’t be in your class today. He asked me to bring his term paper to your office.
W: OK. The paper is due by 3 o’ clock.
M: I have a class from 1: 00 to 2: 00. I’ll bring it to your office after my class.
W: Well, I have a meeting this afternoon. So you can drop it off with the secretary of the art history department. She’ll see to it.
    10. Where does the conversation probably take place?
    A. At home. B. In a restaurant. C. In a supermarket.
    Text 8
M: Oh, Cindy, you got so many things. Three shopping baskets filled with foods! How many days will the foods last?
W: Oh, these are all reduced items that are almost past their “best-before date”. They discount all these goods at 10 percent off. It’s a good way to stock up on things such as beef and canned foods.
M: Don’t you have to buy any green vegetables? Oh, no, what a long checkout line! Do we have to stand in that line?
W: Yes, we do, but don’t worry. The cashier can deal with each customer very quickly. But today, since we came in your Mini Cooper, I’m afraid both of us and the groceries can’t fit in your car. Could we please take the taxi back instead?
    Text 9
M: Have you finished watching the documentary about climate change?
W: Yes. It was my first time to watch this kind of program and I was deeply attracted to it. After watching it, I really became concerned about global warming.
M: Global warming is really a big issue. So what are you doing now?
W: I’m reading some news about global warming. And I read something great.
    M: What did you read?
W: On Monday, President Barack Obama announced a new plan to limit pollution created by power plants. By 2030 power plants will release 32% less carbon dioxide compared with the amount in 2005.
    M: That’s really great.
W: Yes. I don’t think it’s too late to control global warming yet. If all nations work together, global warming won’t be a problem for the next generation.
M: I totally agree. Oh, it’s already 6: 00 p. m. What about going out to eat now?
W: Why not? I’m kind of hungry now. And we can keep talking about this topic while eating out.
    Text 10
W: I never thought I’d be the type to go on a cookery course! My mum and my sister always used to laugh at me, because though I love eating, I couldn’t make anything myself. Then one day my cousin decided she wanted to have cooking classes. She didn’t want to do them on her own, though. I agreed to go along. You could do one-day, three-day or one-week courses. We thought a week should be enough to get us started, so we chose that during the summer holidays.
When we got there on the first morning, loads of people had already arrived. I knew it was a popular course, with lots of teenagers like me there. What I hadn’t expected was that there’d be so many teachers — you got plenty of help that way and I certainly needed it.
We learnt how to bake a cake in the first class. And that was a really good way to get started. Another thing we did was go out and visit places. We didn’t go to any restaurants. There were a few markets nearby. And we visited one of the best ones. We passed a couple of supermarkets on the way, but we didn’t go in.
