My family didn't talk much about my grandfather when I was growing up. He had been a doctor in the British Army and served in the First World War. While many families had relatives in the British Army who fought on the front, it wasn't something you need to talk about with pride. It's only as an adult then that I have started to look deeper into my grandfather's life.

After graduating from medical school in 1906, my grandfather worked as a resident surgeon at the Waterford Hospital for 12 months before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps and starting his first tour of India.

Over the next several years, he served in Rawalpindi, Ferozepore, Multan, Rangoon and Mandalay.

The First World War began on July 28, 1914 and two weeks later, my grandfather was on active service in France and Belgium. He was captured (俘获) at Landrecies on October 18, 1914 and was kept in prison at Sennelager Prisoner of War Camp in Germany. Following his release on June 26, 1915, he returned to London. A month later he was back on active service, first with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Malta, then Gallipoli and then back to France and Belgium where he served as the officer commanding No. 44 Field Ambulance until near the war's end in November 1918.

While his army records afford us a timeline on his service, they don't show much about his experiences on the battlefield. Thankfully, the surviving sketch (素 描) of him at the Battle of the Somme and the accompanying caption (说明文字)by the artist Muirhead Bone help to fill in the gaps. The original, entitled “Waiting for the Wounded", is housed in the Imperial War Museum., London.

When I was a child, a copy of this sketch hung in my parents' bedroom, but I didn't know its importance. Now, as I try to know better about my grandfather, it takes on new significance for me.

24.Why didn't the author's family talk much about his grandfather?

    A. He didn't fight on the front at all.

    B. He was once captured and put into prison.

    C. They hardly knew about his experiences at war.

    D. They didn't think it necessary to share his experiences.

    25. What do we know about the author's grandfather?

    A. He was the commander of several armies.

    B. He served in the army for many years.

    C. He disliked working at the Waterford Hospital.

    D. He escaped from prison and returned to France.

    26. What helped the author know more about his grandfather's experiences on the battlefields?

    A. The illustration by Muirhead Bone.

    B. The army records of his grandfather.

    C. His visit to the Imperial War Museum.

    D. The legend of the Battle of the Somme.

    27. Why does the author write the text?

    A. To tell about people's life in the 1910s.

    B. To help us know about the First World War.

    C. To encourage us to know about our grandfathers.

    D. To tell about his grandfather's experiences at war.

Parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn't feel guilty if they can't. When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them an apartment. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.

One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth. Children who are always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that they won't try at all. Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it's often better to let children learn their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms (批评) are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.

Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of othersit means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deeds. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.

No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.

    28. The author thinks parents___________.

    A. should send their children to college

    B. should support their children after they get married

    C. need to buy an apartment for their children

    D. needn't feel guilty if they can't send their children to universities

    29. What do the underlined words "an obligation" in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. A right. B. A promise.

    C. A duty. D. An excuse.

    30. According to the passage, what should parents do when children make mistakes?

    A. Understand them and tell them not to do that again.

    B. Let them learn the mistakes by themselves in time.

    C. Compare them with brighter brothers or sisters.

    D. Correct their mistakes immediately.

    31. What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?

    A. The duties of parents.

    B. The best way to teach children.

    C. The reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.

    D. The reason why parents owe their children something.

    D

When comparing U. S. and Chinese schools, despite (尽管) many differences, one finds a number of unexpected similarities.

Students in both countries, in some ways, have much in common. This includes their experiences with popular culture like technology and social media, mutual care for the environment, and the fact that all were terribly influenced by COVID-19.

Students in both countries belong to what might be described as a "TikTok culture", although this Chinese app is likely more popular in the U. S. than in China itself. The Chinese term kuaicanshi yule, which means fast-food type entertainment, is the better expression, one that conveys "snackable content" for often meme-oriented, fast moving fashion that compete for short attention spans. Whatever the app or device, students have been much influenced by technology, positively and negatively. In fact, Chinese students do face more controls from their schools about their use of social media, although many are good at finding ways to avoid them.

Furthermore, many students in both countries are attracted to similar styles, in both fashion and food, in music and film, with Chinese and American students often being similarly up-to-date on the latest hits, including television series.

Finally, what both have most in common is the strong wish to live a good life, be successful and secure. The U. S. and China approach these wishes in different ways educationally, but both could learn from each other. This is especially true given the fact that we all live in an increasingly globalized world, and must learn to work together to solve not only global problems like climate change and disease outbreaks, but unfortunate frictions (摩擦) between the U. S. and China. Indeed, with the last point in mind. a significant weakness in the educational systems of both countries is that neither really understands the other. This is not a new problem, but solving it needs serious attention.

    32. What can we learn about the students in the U. S. and China from Paragraph.2?

    A. They show no interest in traditional culture.

    B. They have chances to experience social media.

    C. They are satisfied with their living environment.

    D. They were hardly influenced by COVID-19.

    33. What do Chinese students face about using social media in school?

    A. Rules to control. B. Supports from parents.

    C. Agreement from schools. D. Risk to leave.

    34. What do U. S. and Chinese students have in common?

    A. Schools stop them from using social media.

    B. They have little interest in television series.

    C. They achieve their wishes educationally similarly.

    D. They can't fully understand each other educationally.

    35. Which of the following can be the best title?

    A. U. S. and Chinese Schools

    B. U. S. and Chinese Students

    C. Similarities between U. S. and Chinese Students

    D. Differences between U. S. and Chinese Schools

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。

Travelling with friends can be an amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could ruin your friendship. 36  Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible.

37  Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that's not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into "must-see" "want to see" and "would go if we have time". Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.

Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling--from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane's window seat. But sometimes things don't go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. 38  Have a conversation when problems arise, for the communication is the key.

Don't disappear. When travelling with a group--or even just one other person—you may want some alone time. That's completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you. 39

Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone. 40   After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!

    A. Give each other some space.

    B. Include at least one activity for everyone.

    C. So it's important to make sure you and your friends are on the same page.

    D. At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful to them.

    E. Don't respond to less important work contact or send messages frequently.

    F. It's especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.

    G. And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, but he didn't try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.

One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. "Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.

“You know what, Arthur? I'm not going to ask you again. I'm done cleaning today." And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.

At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom's spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn't like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. "Mom, where are my socks?" Arthur called.

"There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them," Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.

When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. "Ouch!" cried Arthur. "That really hurt."
