①On her round face are a pair of blue eyes and lovely dimples.
②She is a girl with a pair of blue eyes and lovely dimples on her round face.
①Miss Li is in her thirties with a medium build and has her hair in a ponytail.
②Miss Li is a mediumsized woman in her thirties who often wears/ties her hair in a ponytail.
③Miss Li, in her thirties, is of medium size, and often has her hair tied in a ponytail. (“be of + adj. + n.”
①Such is Ms. Han, an easygoing, kind and warmhearted woman.
②Though he comes from a poor family, he is a person of great determination and courage.
①It was beginning to snow, and snowflakes were blinding my eyes.
②The sun was breaking through the blanket of mist.
③Summer sees the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. During autumn, these same mountains are flash gold, and in winter they are covered in sheets of white frost.
④A little way off was a little brook, rushing and sparkling along between green banks.

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother—, , and yet and . One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eightyearold brother, and I unwillingly said goodbye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept. “You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh ... I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likelylooking backyard and ask if we could set up the tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
Paragraph 1
The next day we remembered the brandnew tent we had brought with us.
Paragraph 2
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way.
Paragraph 1
The next day we remembered the brandnew tent we had brought with us. Mom insisted that we should make full use of it since we had brought it. David and I looked at Dad, hoping he could refuse her crazy idea again, but to our great disappointment, he agreed with Mom's idea. So we set up the tent at the foot of the mountain by a river. “Oh, I forgot the pillows!” Mom screamed out before we slept. Finally, we had to collect some grass as our pillows. Despite the ache of my neck, I enjoyed the nice night with fresh air and millions of stars.
Paragraph 2
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. The tent became a close friend then. Every time we camped, Mom read a book or sang a soft song. The warmth of her arms let us feel comfortable and safe. Though she was forgetful and absentminded, laughter accompanied us along the way. Finally we met our two sets of grandparents and enjoyed family happiness. This trip made me experience my mother's and family's love.

My name is Manan, and I am in the sixth grade. Of all the festivals, Diwal is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in autumn, is my favorite because I can set off fireworks and eat delicious foods during the festival.
One day, I went shopping for fireworks with my grandfather. I was looking at the brightly colored fireworks when suddenly I bumped into a little boy. All my fireworks scattered out of the bag.
I quickly bent down to pick them up. Then I noticed the boy’s face was full of wonder and amazement as he stared at my fireworks. It appeared as though he had never seen any this closely. When he bent down to pick them up, I snatched them from him and quickly put them back in my bag. As I stood there looking at him, I realized there was something different about this boy. His clothes were old and torn; he looked as though he had not eaten for a few days.
On reaching home, I finished my dinner quickly and ran out to set off the fireworks. I was fascinated by the variety of colors that burst open from the fireworks and lit up the sky, but my wonder was short-lived. I noticed that my grandfather had gone inside the house coughing. Wondering why, I looked around and noticed all the smoke that may have been irritating his throat. Feeling bad for only a second, I continued lighting the fireworks one after another. But, inside me, it felt different—I felt guilty about taking pleasure from bursting the fireworks.
I could feel my conscience pricking me, “Manan! How can you do this? It just takes a few minutes for all the money to disappear in smoke, but the boy you met today looked like he did not even have the basic necessities of life. The children in orphanages also need love and help. Didn’t you see how your fireworks have affected Grandpa too? Can you still ignore these things and indulge in this kind of fun?” Realizing the worthlessness of this temporary pleasure, I really wanted to use the money in a more rewarding way. I started thinking about my own way to celebrate Diwali.

Sometimes things may seem beyond our efforts, but keep on and you will find beautiful views in front of you.
I was on my second outdoor experience trip that every student had to go on. That year, we had a choice of what difficulty level we wanted: one through five. My friends and I had agreed that one would make us seem lazy and that challenging ourselves would make for a good story. In choosing level two, we believed that it would still be a fun experience.
We were quickly proven wrong.
The further we drove into the White Mountains, the higher the walls on either side of the winding highway grew. I was still in awe of the mountains I had seen so many times before, but I couldn’t help feeling my heart shaking with anxiety. Soon I would have to leave the school bus that brought 50 students out into the wilderness like every year before.
My group consisted of my friends, Riley and Ann, and six extremely athletic boys. We arrived at base camp lodge (木屋) first. After putting things aside and rearranging our bags, we made our way out into the wilderness.
The three of us girls were questioning if this was really a level two. The path was unbelievably steep (陡峭) and rocky toward the top of the mountain where the first hut was located. We were practically jogging in an attempt to keep up with the boys ahead of us. Before the trip, we were told to take breaks as often as we needed to drink water, but that wasn’t helping our pounding hearts and heavy breathing as much as it should have.
Then, 30 minutes into the most difficult hike the three of us had ever done, Riley slipped and landed on her knee. After a few moments, we turned back down the mountain as it was decided that Riley could not make the trip with us. We sat on the grass outside the lodge where we had started while Riley was brought inside to join the level one group. Ann and I exchanged breathless glances, our cheeks red and wet with sweat.

“At the beginning of the COVID-19, I went through some painful personal stuff and would often go out at night for long walks because no one was around and I couldn't sleep any-way,” Kelly wrote on Twitter.
“One night I was walking down my street and noticed that someone had set up a few little objects in a tree planter and upon closer inspection, I realized it was a fairy garden with a little note about the 4-year-old girl, Eliana, who felt lonely in quarantine (隔离期) and wanted to spread some cheer.”
Kelly wrote a note to Eliana pretending to be a fairy named Sapphire that had come to live in the tree. “I said I would gift her a magical fairy dice (骰子) if she did 3 things for me,” Kelly said. Kelly put the note in a small bottle filled with glitter and placed it in the garden, unsure if she would get a response.
The next day, she found a handwritten letter from Eliana explaining she had completed all of Sapphire's tasks. Kelly said she immediately burst into tears. “So I left a bunch of my dice that had small imperfections and left her another note and also a little extra note for her parents with my name and phone number so they could contact me and know I wasn't some bad person leaving notes for their small child,” Kelly said.
“Doing this every night gave me purpose in a horribly painful and lonely time,” Kelly said. “I looked forward to my days again and started ordering art supplies and little toys to leave her.”
“We wrote back and forth throughout the last 9 months, helping each other feel less lone-ly and I got to chat with her mom via text to make sure my gifts were a little more personal.”

I was born and grew up in the north of Scotland, which was not far from the sea. When I was little, I enjoyed the seaside scenery very much. I often sat on the rock by the sea and watched the view of the sea. I was fond of playing with the sand on the beach and chased the waves with my old sister, Alastair.
Across the beach there was a tidal(潮汐)island, which means that when the tide goes out, you can walk to it, but when the tide comes in again, you can’t get to it. Mum and Dad never let us go there. They told us that it was dangerous. However, the tidal island was full of mystery to me. I said to myself, “There must be some fascinating scenery worth exploring. How I wish I had a chance to land on it!”
On a little cold day in October, while my parents were away for a friend’s wedding, my sister was determined to take me to the beach near our house, where we would have a good time. I wanted to build sand castles.
When we arrived at the beach, the tide was out. We ran on the beach back and forth and enjoyed ourselves very much. With the help of my sister, I made several sand castles of different shapes. Feeling a little tired, I sat on the beach for a break. I saw the tidal island opposite, which looked very nice in the autumn sunshine.
“Let’s go to explore the tidal island, Alastair,” I said to my sister.
“That’s a good idea. But Mum and Dad said we couldn’t. Maybe we won’t return safely!” Alastair said.
“Don’t worry! We’ll try to return before the tide comes in again.” I begged Alastair.
Finally she agreed. We returned home and brought some peanut butter sandwiches and a bottle of milk with us.

Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class presentation at home!” Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

It was the swim season, but Elizabeth didn’t like swim meets. She got horribly nervous but not because she wanted to win. Her nerves came from the possibility that she would do something horribly wrong and let everyone down. The day of a meet, she would be scared all day.
Recently, Elizabeth’s team announced a special swim night: Members 11 and older would swim a timed 50 meters in all four strokes and then have pizza. It wasn’t exactly a meet, because it would involve only team members. Elizabeth countered that it absolutely was a meet because there would be races and timers and so on. But her mother really wanted her to go. She fought back furiously but finally agreed.
When the day of the special swim night arrived, Elizabeth was nervous. When she got to the pool with her parents, she became even more nervous.
Her first race was the 50-meter freestyle. She swam her backstroke and breaststroke without incident. It wasn’t fun for Elizabeth. Her butterflies just kept flapping.
Then it was time for the T-shirt relay, which works like this: One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt, a pair of socks, and a swim cap; swims 50 meters; and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.
For some unknown reason, Elizabeth’s relay team chose her to swim the anchor leg(最后一棒). The team dressed her in socks and a T-shirt. And then she was off. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn’t wearing them.
Approaching the halfway mark, she was still in the lead. Then somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth’s socks had fallen off and was floating in the pool. “She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told Elizabeth’s team, “or you will be disqualified.”

When I was a baby,my parents always gave me anything I waned. Then my dad died when l was three, and I got even more stuff as my mom, fiends and family tried to make me feel better. Mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world changed.
My mom had thought buying houses was a good way to invest her money. But the real estate (房地产) market crashed. I went from the kid who got an iPod when his tooth fell out and who had the coolest house to hang out in, to literally haying nowhere to stay. Mom's best fiend Auntie Loren, took us in until Mom could figure out what to do.
After the real estate crash, when I asked fora new toy, or bike, or even to see a movie Mom would say "maybe for your birthday" or "I'm sorry honey, but we can't really afford that now." I didn't know it then, but Mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games were not helping my mom, who was already a widow, deal with her feelings about our new crisis-our financial situation. But I wasn't used to hearing "no”. So for a year or two I kept asking.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said I wanted a new video gaming system . I didn't know it was expensive. All knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.
