Olivia Sievers, a flight instructor in Germany, is a wonderful person who loves animals. Her flights frequently took her to Buenos Aires, where she had to spend 2 days in a guesthouse. Olivia was walking toward her guesthouse one day when she noticed a stray dog (流浪狗)in front of the hotel room door. She turned her head to this dog and fed him.
The dog seemed to form a relationship with the woman and started to wait for her at the entrance gate from that day forward. Olivia gave him the name Rubio. Rubio gladly rolled his eyes, lay down on one side, and decided to wait for Olivia to stroke(抚摸)his stomach.
Olivia avoided meeting the dog after that event since he always accompanied her. Rubio would obey Olivia out the door or stand in line for her outside the guesthouse anytime she left the house. He desired the focus he once received. Sometimes animals require love and affection(感情).
Olivia continued to feed the dog because she realized she couldn't avoid interacting with him. She covered him with a blanket when it got cold.
Olivia had to fly to BA each 3 months. The guesthouse staff informed her that the dog had visited the hotel each day for months, looking forward to meeting her. Then he decided to
wait for Olivia patiently. Olivia requested that Rubio be taken in by a local shelter. They consented, but nothing came of it: Rubio fled from the shelter and returned to the guesthouse.
Olivia Sievers eventually chose to adopt the dog and bring him to Germany, where Rubio had a happy fresh start. The cheerful dog quickly adjusted to his new life of leisure and play.

If he is in a tight spot, says Trouble Kalua, people mention his name, asking, “What do you expect?” Shortly before his birth in Malawi, his father had lost his job as a bus conductor, making the family even poorer. Then the baby nearly died. “This boy is trouble,”his father said. “His name is Trouble.”
Across Africa names can have a story behind them.Yewande, for instance,is a Yoruba name meaning “mother has paid me a visit", given when an older female relative dies just before a girl is born. Kiptanui may suggest at a difficult birth for mothers who speak one o the Kalenjin group of languages in Kenya.
But southern Africa stands out for nominative(提名)creativity, at least when it comes to English names.
Ask Zimbabweans about their school friends and you will hear different registers: Lovemore,Hopewell,Innocence,Patience, Knowledge, Fortune, Brilliant. A Malawian (himself Golden) lists friends named Goodfriday,Wisdom and Iron.
In Zimbabwe children were long given African names with meaning. This practice switched after British colonization(殖民),when having an English name was seen as a way of getting ahead. Names may refer to conditions around the birth, a quality parents see in the child,an aspiration(期望)for them or even for the country.
Under white rule some children were called Democracy,Freedom or,allegedly,Polling Station. Other names suggested progress. One venture capitalist recalls school friends named Computer.
Names, and the language they are in, reflect changing times, too. In Zimbabwe, whose economy is falling down, one comes across people named No Money. In many places African names are supplanting(取代)English ones. In recent years in South Africa, Enzokuhle(“to do good" in Xhosa),has become one of the most popular names, perhaps inspired by a popular song,“Enzo”.
It may be that names such as Salad Nthenda will become relics. The Malawian, whose mother ate lots of vegetables when pregnant(怀孕的),says his “name felt good from day
one". He loves the “uniqueness".Although he is teased at times, he does not care.

No rainforest is exactly the same-yet most rainforests are now in the small land area 23.26 degrees north and 23.26 degrees south of the Equator(赤道),between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. You can find tropical(热带的)rainforests in South America and Indonesia.Other rainforests grow well further from the Equator, in Thailand and Sri Lanka.
Despite covering a relatively small area, rainforests have a big role to play in supporting the world. Tropical rainforests are home to a rich variety of plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain? Four hundred and eighty varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.
Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing huge quantities of CO2 and producing a large amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival.
Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists thinkthis is a deliberate(故意的) way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects such as caterpillars.
To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled(缠结的)leaves and bushes, as in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where leaves are destroyed slowly and turned into food for the trees and other forest life.
Worryingly, rainforests around the world are disappearing at an alarming rate, thanks to deforestation, river pollution and soil erosion(流失) as land is being lost for agriculture and trees are cut down for wood. A few thousand years ago, tropical rainforests covered as much as 12 per cent of the land surface on Earth, but today this has fallen to less than 7 per cent.
We can only hope that the world governments work together to preserve the rainforests-beautiful and important for our existence.
32.What's the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.The area and history of rainforests.
B.The future development of rainforests.
C.Rainforests are the lungs of the planet.
D.Rainforests are home to animals and plants.
33.How do rainforests stop tree diseases from spreading?
A.The leaves of two trees never touch each other.
B.There are few leaf-eating insects in the rainforests.
C.The leaves and branches of trees are close together.
D.The rich soil of the rainforests helps trees grow.
34.What can we know about rainforests?
A.Rainforests cover a relatively large area.

C.Rainforests are the same as described in films.
D.Rainforests cover less than 7 per cent of the land surface now.
35. What's the author's attitude to the loss of rainforests?

Mama was calling to me. I started awake, realizing it must be almost midnight. “Mary,” she said, “where's your homework?” Then I remembered. I had not finished it. I had not left my completed papers on the kitchen table, where she could see from the last of three jobs that she held. “Oh, Mama, I fell asleep," I told her weakly.
“Well, you'd better get up now and finish your work. Your studies come first!” she said. I dragged(拖)myself out of bed, found my books and set out to work. As I did so,I could not help grumbling(抱怨).Why me? Why did she always seem to pick me out, for such treatment? Those feelings were nothing new, but I did not give voice to them.
Mama had given me one gift, however, I had the habit of happiness, so even if my small world was not fully sunny, neither was it sad. I also loved to talk, a character not always appreciated by Miss Jordan, my tenth-grade strict English teacher. She was very thin and wore her hair pulled back.
One day in her class I was so busy talking that I didn't realize she had stopped teaching and was glaring(瞪眼) at me. “Young lady, I would like to see you after school.”
Later Miss Jordan explained that when she was talking she expected me to listen. “For punishment I want you to write a thousand-word article on education and its influence on society," she said, “and turn it in by next Wednesday.”
Well, I finished it on time. I was confident. It was a good paper. Next day in class, however, she called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite it,” she said. “Remember, each paragraph is supposed to begin with a topic sentence.” When she returned my paper a second time, she corrected the spelling. The third time, the grammar. The fourth time, it was rhetoric(修辞). The fifth time, it wasn’t neat enough. I was sick. The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly, in ink. When she saw it, she smiled. She finally accepted the paper. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, Miss Jordan came into the class and said, “Class, do you still remember an essay contest held citywide?” |
I was amazed, excited and grateful. |
