    B

A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. A teacher read out numbers—74,470, 70,809, 98,402—and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.

The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problems.

From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads (珠子), so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My normal solution was escape, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.

Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry (几何学). But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device (设备), and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and results appear to move in step.

My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once confused her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.

    24. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

     A. To prove the difficulty of math. B. To introduce the topic of the abacus.

     C. To show the cleverness of Stevenson. D. To stress the importance of abacus learning.

    25. What do we know about the author from paragraph 3?

     A. He was weak in math.  B. He was good at computer.

     C. He regarded math as useful. D. He had a close relationship with kids.

    26. What does the author realize from his learning experience?

     A. All roads lead to Rome. B. It’s never too late to learn.

     C. Faith can move mountains. D. Practice makes perfect.

    27. What is the best title for the text?

     A. How I develop confidence B. The secret to my success

     C. The power of abacus  D. A rough ride—learning math

    C

The Andler Hillclimb is an annual dirt bike competition that has dirt bikers from around Europe try, to reach the top of a dangerous hillside course in Belgium. It’s been held every year for the last two decades, but so far, no one has been able to reach the top.

The so-called “impossible climb” starts out as rough gravel and then switches over to a rough uneven cliff (悬崖) face designed to throw riders off and roll them and their bikes back down to the base of the hill. It’s not the angle of the course that is the problem, according to most riders, but the sudden change of ride surface that makes keeping control of the bike and reaching the top so hard. Some fly off their bike early during the climb. While others get painfully close to the finish line, yet in the end they all succumb to the power of gravity (重力) before reaching their goal.

Despite gathering the most talented dirt bikers in Europe at the start line every year, the Andler Hillclimb has so far remained unconquered. The closest one to success was a Suzuki bike rider who once reportedly crossed the finish line with the front wheel before rolling back down the slope              like the rest of the competitors. Sadly, his achievement didn’t count as a valid climb, as the entire bike and its rider must make it to the top of the hill.

With so many riders having failed to conquer the Andler Hillclimb over the last 20 years, why are people still trying every year? Why not just call the climb impossible and stop it? Well, maybe it has something to do with the bragging rights (胜者为王)? Can you imagine what it would be like to be the very first dirt biker to reach the top of this famous hill?

In case you want to try your luck, or if you simply want to see the hill make fools of dozens of daredevils (蛮干者), this year’s event is scheduled for August.

    28. What makes it difficult for bikers to reach the top of the Andler Hillclimb?

     A. The bikers’ poor riding skills. B. The steep angle of the slope.

     C. The rough gravel road surface. D. The sudden changes in ride surface.

    29. What do the underlined words 'succumb to’’ in the second paragraph probably mean?

     A. Give in to. B. Break through. C. Learn about. D. Fight against.

    30. Why does the author mention the example in the third paragraph?

     A. To criticize the strict rules of the competition.

     B. To express regret over the Suzuki bike rider’s failure.

     C. To show how difficult it is to win the competition.

     D. To explain why the competition is popular with bikers.

    31. What do we know about the Andler Hillclimb from the passage?

     A. It is the most dangerous European competition.

     B. It is expected to be held in August this year.

     C. It is attended by the world’s best dirt bikers every year.

     D. It aims to throw riders and their bikes back down the hill.

    D

Have you ever wondered if you see the same colours as other people? Most people know what blue is when they see it. They call it "blue” because they were taught the word and connected it with what they saw. But how do you know what you see as blue isn't someone else s red?

The ability to perceive (感知) different colours is up to receptors (接受器) in our eyes. Light waves hit these receptors and they react depending on which colour the light is, sending signals to the brain. The brain then reads these signals to determine which colour light the eyes are receiving.

Some people's receptors are more developed than others. The inability of the receptor to feel the light waves correctly means that some people cannot tell the differences between similar colours.

Those with more developed receptors can see more colours. We sometimes hear people having an argument about whether something is dark blue or black. It might be because one person has stronger receptors to feel the light than another.

In the past, most scientists would argue that everyone saw colours in the same way. However, research was conducted on monkeys, in which their receptors were changed. This enabled them to see more colours than usual. Normally monkeys can only see blue and green, but the change allowed them to see red. Their brains automatically (自动地) got used to new colours. This suggests that our brains may adapt depending on our stimulus (刺激) and find new colors of the things we see. Colours could be a very personal experience, unique to everyone.

So, the next time you talk about your favourite colour, just remember if yours is blue and your friend says red, you two might actually be thinking about the same colour. What if everyone in the world has the same favourite colour, but just calls it different names?

    32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

     A. How we perceive colours.

     B. The inability to see colours.

     C. What the brain does with signals.

     D. The connection between receptors and light waves.

    33. Which of the following might the author agree with?

     A. Some people cannot feel colours with their developed receptors.

     B. The more light people feel, the weaker receptors they have.

     C. People with poor receptors usually have colour weakness.

     D. People who have strong receptors can see dark blue.

    34. What's the purpose of conducting the research on monkeys?

     A. To test the monkeys with colours.

     B. To develop the receptors of humans.

     C. To enable monkeys to find more colors.

     D. To prove everyone sees colours in a different way.

    35. Where does the text probably come from?

     A. A film review.  B. A science magazine.

     C. An art magazine.  D. A business newspaper.

    47. 阅读下面材料根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn’t very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.

So in our school’s annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) comer to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.

One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny! ’ But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It’s your choice.”

My mind was spinning (快速旋转) faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role.-She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.” I looked into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.

In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered (掌握) my lines and songs.

    注意:

    1、续写词数应为150左右;

    2、请按如下格式作答。

I am very glad to hear from you. Thank you for trusting and telling me your trouble.

Now I have known your problem clearly. I do think that the best way to stop it is to make a friendly talk with your mum as soon as possible. In a way, your mum loves you very much so she wants to know anything about you. But as a teenager, we have the right to keep something secret by ourselves. So you should tell her politely that you do not want her to read your diary again, even though she is your parent. Of course you would like to ask her for help if you have some trouble. Then I am sure she will keep away from your diary and you will be happy again.

    Best wishes!

The big day come at last. I jogged all the way to the backstage of the school hall. Cameras were lighting up in all directions. Looking back on five months practise, I seemed to have confidence in myself. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring and outgoing person who had been hidden all along. However, when I was about to go on stage, my heart was pounding so hard that my throat tightened and my knees felt weak.

At that time, Mrs. Sally came backstage for her final cheque up and notice that my nervousness. “It doesn't matter how you do tonight,” she said. “You've already shown how wonderful you are.” Looking into Mrs Sally's shining blue eyes, I calmed down and then walked onto the stage with his warm words like a ray of sunshine. When I finished my performance, the audience burst into applause. The scene made me feel myself floating in an ocean of happiness. I knew that all this was due to the encouragement from my teacher, who helped me find the confidence to succeed.
