Buckingham Palace Perhaps the most famous palace in the world, Buckingham Palace is the officialLondon residence of the British monarch (君主). State rooms are open to visitors only during the Palace's Summer Opening, which takes place in most of August and September. However, if you are heading to the palace at a different time, you can witness “Changing of the Guard”, where the guard is changed daily from April to July, and on alternate days from August to March.
British Museum This museum showcases works from the of human civilization to the modern age, and has contributions from all continents of the world. The main attractions include the much-debated Parthenon Marbles (Elgin Marbles), Mummy of Cleopatra from Thebes, and the Rosetta Stone. Entry to the museum is free.
The London Eye The 32 capsules on the London Eye carry almost 10,000 visitors every day. Due to its 360°-rotation ability, you can almost see the entire city of London when you reach at the top. Until the Shard's privately-operated deck opened in 2013, the London Eye was the tallest public viewing point.

B A leading scientist says researchers in Florida are close to developing a way to control the algae(藻类) known to cause deadly “red tide”. Michael Crosby heads the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, a leading research organization.A 10-month-old red tide has been killing ocean life along Florida's southwestern coast. Huge numbers of dead fish have been washed up on beaches from the city of Naples up to Tampa. Red tide can cause problems for humans too. Contact with the algae can cause breathing difficulties, burning eyes and skin pain.
On Monday, Governor Rick Scott ordered emergency measures to deal with the crisis. Crosby said he welcomed the move, which releases more money and resources to solve the problem. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission suspects the red tide caused the deaths of hundreds of sea turtles this year. The agency also blames it for at least some of the 68 deaths of manatees(海牛). Crosby said, scientists are currently testing a process that would pump red-algae-filled seawater through an ozone-treatment system. Then the purified water would be pumped back
into the ocean or waterway. Crosby said the experiments were carried out in huge 25,000-gallon tanks. He said all succeeded in removing the poisonous algae. Crosby said the water chemistry returned to normal within 24 hours. Scientists are studying the use of seaweed and other organisms(生物) to fight the red tide. Red tides happen almost yearly in Florida. They start in the Gulf of Mexico, where microscopic algae cells called Karenia brevis feed off deep-sea nutrients. Ocean currents carry the algae
close to the coast, usually in autumn. Crosby said strong northerly winds that normally end red tides failed to form last winter. And he said scientists are not sure if the winds will fail to form again.

C(题源:《科学美国人》) Earlier this year six Amazon delivery robots were introduced in a trial program in Snohomish County, Washington. The boxy machines, which resemble six-wheeled coolers, carry meals, groceries and packages to homes and offices. As a growing number of citizens expect immediate or scheduled delivery for just about everything, such services are fast developing, which is regarded as an effective approach to solve the
last-mile delivery problem. By shifting the delivery vehicles from roads to the sidewalk, cities could greatly reduce traffic jams. But companies like Amazon are not developing this delivery technology simply to clear up urban traffic. Self-driving vehicles and sidewalk robots could reduce last-mile delivery costs in cities by as much as 40 percent, according to a 2018 report. To gain public trust, these machines must demonstrate they can safely and quietly share pedestrian spaces. “It's actually really hard to move on crowded sidewalks and not bump into people,”
says Renia Ehrenfeucht, chair of the Community and Regional Planning Department at The University of New Mexico. Sidewalk robots may also face disruptions to their own routines, including curious bystanders blocking their paths and thieves looking to grab a package on route. “I do think the largest problem is going to be malevolent(恶意的) behavior toward these things,” says Mary Cummings, director of the Humans and Autonomy Lab at Duke University. Additional challenges include
perfecting the software that helps delivery robots avoid both still and moving objects as well as dealing with city officials who want to protect public spaces. For example, San Francisco, home-delivery start-ups such as DoorDash and Postmates, put a ban in 2017 on autonomous deliveries by sidewalk robots and has only slowly opened the door for companies seeking permits. Other US communities have regulated where such robots can go and how they must behave.
Given these obstacles, sidewalk delivery robots are not necessarily destined to win the future. A 2016 McKinsey report pointed out old-fashioned bicycles remain the most cost-competitive choice for many last-mile deliveries.

D Supportive parents do more than good schools to increase children's exam results. Parents who help with homework and attend school events can outweigh the effect of weak schools, according to researchers in America. The team analyzed data on more than 10,000 teenagers across the US. Dr Toby Parcel, of North Carolina State University, said,“Our study showed that parents need to be aware of how important they are. They should spend time on their children, checking their homework, attending school events and letting kids
know school is important.” The researchers found that pupils in weaker schools whose families were supportive of their education and involved in school life performed better academically(学习上的) than students who attended effective schools but whose families were not involved. Effective schools' pupils can do the best with their families' supports. The researchers said that children gain benefits from both school and their family relationships. They set out to judge which was more important in increasing children's exam results,
analyzing data on 10,585 teenagers from 1,000 randomly(任意地) selected secondary schools. The data includes information on schools' achievement scores, parents' involvement in homework, school events and students' exam results. The researchers thought that trust, good communication and active involvement in a child's academic life were the most important. They also held the view that effective schools should have the ability to serve as a positive environment for learning, involve students in after-school activities and have strong teacher staff.
So government should focus on improving parenting skills rather than focusing solely on “fixing schools”. Besides, researchers suggested a wider introduction of flexible working patterns. Good parenting practices would help to shrink social divides. In fact, middle class and working class experienced “unequal childhoods”. Middle-class parents can create a full schedule to encourage their children's academic development. However, working-class parents cannot. And they view children's development as “natural growth”. That is,they hardly play or talk with their children actively.
12.Parcel's research showed that parents _________. A.should involve more in students' activities B.play a small role in children's development C.should let children alone to be independentD.should educate children completely on their own
    答案与解析▶

B At the beginning of July, my best friend and I volunteered for two months in Morocco for an educational project called “Youth Got Talent”. Run under a large non-profit organization, our mission (使命) was to teach French and Chinese to volunteers at a local NGO as well as to conduct a survey on tobacco use among young people. While we were reading about Morocco online in preparation for our trip, we came across some disturbing advice. Visitors to Morocco, it read, often meet small children asking for money. In
these circumstances, they should immediately turn around and walk away. We couldn't help but feel somewhat angry by these comments. People certainly aren't forced to help others, but they don't need to advocate cold indifference (冷漠), either. The director of the association informed us about the high percentage of children who dropped out of school and took us to visit a local slum (贫民窟). Most families would often have several children whom they couldn't afford to send to school. Although public schools in Morocco are free, some parents don't have enough money to buy books and stationery (文具). Some children
were victims of child labor, and others roamed the streets selling tissues. After we recovered from our initial shock, we decided to do something to help pull these kids out of poverty. We started a project called “1001 Stories of the Sahara”, through which we worked together with local NGO members to record the stories of children living in Morocco's slums. These stories were then posted on the project's public account on social media. By exposing people to the difficult social realities facing the Moroccan poor, we hoped that more people would consider the
causes of poverty when they came across small children asking for money and show a little sympathy rather than follow online advice and walk away from them.

C Whose turn is it to do the washing up? It causes arguments in households all over the world. Scientists now believe the daily chore could be good for your health and well-being. A study has found that people, who do the dishes mindfully, focusing on their actions carefully, feel less stressed and nervous. Scientists at Florida State University set out to discover if washing up could be used as an informal contemplative(沉思的) practice to promote mindfulness and improve emotional well-being.
Mindfulness is described as being a state of active, open attention of the present time, according to Psychology Today. When a person achieves mindfulness, they observe their thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them as good or bad.Instead of letting your life pass you by, the practice encourages a person to live in the moment and relish(从……获得乐趣) their daily experiences. To analyze the impact of washing the dishes, researchers at Florida State University recruited 51 students to engage in mindful dishwashing. Just over half read a
230-word passage that highlighted the importance of the sensory experience of dishwashing, Fox News reported. The remaining participants acted as controls, and read a similar-length passage about proper dishwashing techniques. They were then asked to complete measures of mindfulness, effect and experiential recall. Those who performed mindful dishwashing were found to have achieved greater state mindfulness, increases in elements of positive effect, e.g. inspiration, decreases in nervousness and over-estimations of dishwashing time. Feelings of
nervousness decreased by 27 per cent in those who mindfully washed their dishes, while inspiration increased by 25 per cent in the same group. Meanwhile there was no change among those in the control group. The researchers said their findings could have implications for other daily activities. They suggested that mindfulness as well as positive effect could be developed through intentionally engaging in a broad range of activities.

D The face of the four US presidents on Mount Rushmore will likely last for centuries. But at a newly opened exhibit in Japan, youcan catch them only for about eight months. This year, the annual sand sculpture event at the Sand Museum in Tottori (鸟取县), Japan, is focused on another country. This is the 10th anniversary of the event. Artists came from 19 countries to shape sand into different sculptures that represent events in US history and American landmarks.
Tottori is a remote city in western Japan. In the past, not many tourists traveled to it. To attract more visitors, Tottori officials decided to use a natural resource: sand. They decided to create a sand museum that would house a series of sand sculptures based on different geographic areas of the world. The sand from each year's exhibition is used again the next year. The project has been a success. About 500,000 people visit the museum during the eight months. Some return year after year to see the new sculptures.
The city is now a popular spot for sand sculpture artists too. Sculptors from around the world come to Tottori each spring, spending a few weeks working on their masterpieces. They use special tools to smooth the sandy surfaces, cut angles and details. They use only sand and water to create the huge sculptures, some of which tower over their creators. Originally, the artists built their creations outside. But the works lasted less than two months outdoors. So the museum built a permanent structure to house the artworks, which extended their life to eight months. Now many more tourists get to see the
sculptures. Still, the fact that this art is not permanent is part of the appeal. The temporary sculptures reflect the Japanese value of appreciating the fleeting(短暂的)nature of the world. Tottori is not the only Japanese town that shows temporary art like this. Sapporo, in northern Japan, hosts a similar exhibit in the winter, using snow instead of sand. That will be just about the time that the US sand sculpture exhibition is taken apart, and the sand is saved for next year's show.
12.Why is sand sculpture event held every year in Tottori?A.To attract more visitors to the city.B.To represent the character of the city.C.To show the diverse culture of the city.D.To show the wonderful artworks of the city.

B(题源:多伦多大学网) Kids should tell the truth. But a recent study co-authored by the University of Toronto's Kang Lee suggests that learning to lie can confer cognitive(认知的)benefits. Lee, a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and his co-authors based their findings on an experiment in which they asked 42 preschool-aged children in China—who showed no original ability to lie—how to play a hide-and-seek game.
They were split into two groups with an equal number of boys and girls, with an average age of about 40 months. Over four days, they played a game in which they hid a treat, such as popcorn, from an adult in one hand. The grown-up had to choose the hand that the child indicated. If the child successfully cheated the adult, they got to keep the treat. The experiment group of kids was taught how to lie in order to win the game while the control group(对照组) was not. The study showed that the kids who were taught deception performed better than the control group.
“With just a few days of instruction, young children quickly learned to cheat and gained immediate cognitive benefits from doing so.” the researchers write in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. “More generally,” the authors add, “these findings support the idea that even seemingly negative human social behaviors may confer cognitive benefits when such behaviors call for goal pursuing, problem solving, mental state tracking and perspective taking.”
Does that mean parents should throw out conventional wisdom and actually teach their kids to lie? Not exactly. “I don't think that would be a good idea”, Lee says, “but it's not a bad idea to let them play these kinds of deceptive games.”

C(题源:《经济学人》) Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci...the art world has never lacked talent. And now, a new painter is ready to join the list, although this one isn't even human. Auction house Christie's Prints and Multiples makes history by offering the first piece of art created by artificial intelligence (AI) for sale. The painting is a portrait(肖像) of a man called Edmond De Belamy.
The work, which features a man with a mysterious look on his face, was created by software developed by the French art group Obvious. Laugero-Lasserre, an art collector, called the work “grotesque and amazing at the same time”. This isn't the first example of AI-produced artwork, as AI has already been used to write poems and compose songs. However, many people doubt whether it should be called art at all. According to Russian writer Leo Tolstroy, art is about creating emotion. It's “a means of...joining people together in the same feelings” he once said.
So, if the emotion behind art is what makes it,the ability to create and use tools is what makes human beings different from other species. And as a tool itself, the AI technology used to create the portrait is the result of a lot of efforts made by several designers. Together, they “fed” the AI a huge collection of paintings from the 14th to the 18th centuries, until it was able to work out how to make similar paintings of its own. The introduction of AI art could be the beginning of a new artistic movement. However, not everyone is ready to welcome these high-tech artists just yet.
“The human mind is what's behind the AI technology and decides what it does. And the human mind is not a cold, hard fact,” said Oscar Schwartz, a professor of AI. “Rather, it is something that's created with our opinions and something that changes over time.”

D(题源:《大西洋月刊》) Shoplifters(《小偷家族》) is a film about acrisis. The Shibata family live together into asmall home with three generations—the adults earn low wages; work and struggle to feed and educate the kids. The writer and director Hirokazu Koreeda wants to use his film to address the widening class divides in Japan, which have ruined the country's social safety system.
The situation of Shibata family is, on the surface, rather complicated. The whole Shibata family live in the home of grandmother who receives a small pension. That income is added by the others taking odd jobs, and committing small theft. Early in the movie, Nobuyo and her husband, Osamu, come across a little girl named Yuri, who has been abandoned and shows signs of abuse. The Shibatas take her in, even though they don't really have room for her. Early on, Nobuyo offers Yuri something nice and the girl runs away—she associates gift-giving with her abusive mother, who would buy her things as a cheap apology for
her short temper. Nobuyo quickly understands the situation and gathers Yuri into a whisper in her ear that this is what people who love you should do. So much of what the Shibata family does is out of love, but there are heavy prices to pay for not complying with social rules. The final act of Shoplifters, however, is devastating(令人难受的). After seeing the director tease out every strange bond in this temporary family, one finds it much harder to watch when things fall apart.
12.What is the purpose of the director in making the film Shoplifters?A.To show that shoplifters meet their crisis in Japan.B.To show that many Japanese people live in small houses.C.To show that the problem of class divides in Japan is serious.D.To show that adults in Japan cannot earn enough to support families.

B [2020·东北重点中学联考]When an NBA player is young, he thinks he can win the championship by himself. It is only later when he has aged and been through many battles that he learns an important lesson: there is no “I” in “team”. There is no better example of the value of teamwork than the Boston Celtics. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were all superstars on three different teams. Yet, none of them had any titles to show for it. Then, they decided to sacrifice money and individual status to play together in the 2007-2008 season. Garnett
and Allen joined Pierce on the Celtics and changed the NBA in the process. It started in simple ways. Garnett and Allen are two of the most intense athletes in the world. They treat every second of every practice like it is the NBA championship. If you want to play alongside them then you will have to do the same. So, the young guys on the Celtics started giving their full effort too. Pierce had been the star of the Celtics for many years. He used to shoot the ball many times a game. But with the addition of Allen and Garnett he shot less and focused on defense. His
selflessness showed the young players that doing what made the team better was the only thing that mattered. When the Celtics were winning and the game was almost over, Garnett, Pierce and Allen would come out of the game. But they wouldn't just sit on the bench. Instead, they stood and cheered and screamed for their teammates. They wanted to support their friends and teammates. Now, the guys who don't play know they can still shape the game by cheering so they scream and cheer when Garnett, Allen
and Pierce are playing. The Celtics have developed a strong relationship. They are more than just teammates. They are brothers.

C The bathroom was one of the few places that technology had not been very successful in entering, but with Japanese smart toilets gaining in popularity around the world, this last bastion is about to fall. And if you're wondering what makes smart toilets so special, just check out the smartest of them all, the Toto Neorest NX2. Quite frankly, there's not a lot this toilet can't do. It automatically lifts the seat as you approach it, and if you program
it, it can even heat up the toilet seat instantly, so that your legs don't feel cold when you sit on it. Once you've finished your “business”, you don't need to use toilet paper to clean yourself, as the Neorest is more than happy to do it for you with gentle beams of warm purified water. And since leaving you with a wet behind(屁股) just isn't very practical, the smart toilet also has a built-in dryer. There's no need to grab a can of deodorant (除臭剂) and spray it all around you to cover bad odors as the Neorest NX2 also has its own deodorizer. Toto's “Tornado Flush” has been
completely redesigned to not only be more effective in removing waste from the bowl, but also clean the surfaces most difficult to reach. The NX2 uses ionized eWater+, which is basically electrolyzed water with cleansing and antibacterial functions, and if that doesn't get everything perfectly clean, the ultraviolet light (紫外线) technology certainly will. You'll never have to clean this thing, at least not on the inside, because it cleans itself. And you never even have to touch its lid, as it comes down as
soon as you step away from it. But the world's most advanced smart toilet doesn't come cheap. You'll have to pay around $11,000 for it when it hits the US market this summer. Worth it? Certainly, now if only I could afford it.

D(题源:《科学美国人》) Humans and elephants don't always get along. In Africa and Asia, elephants damagepublic facilities, farmers' crops, and naturalhabitat critical for other species. If an elephant becomes a problem, humans may kill it. So local people are trying to find better ways to keep elephants away from sensitive places. Now, researchers think they have a good tool to discourage elephants: honeybee.
“Elephants strongly dislike being bitten in the trunk, so it's an extremely sensitive organ. Imagine being bitten in your nose by a bee, and multiply that a few thousand times.” says Mark Wright, a professor of entomology(昆虫学) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Kenyan farmers have long known that if they hang live beehives around their farms, they will drive elephants away. “The problem is ‘How do you manage hundreds of thousands of hives, if you have a huge area to protect?’ And then the idea came up to look at the alarm, which are chemicals that the bees release to
launch an attack on something that's robbing the hive.” Because elephants have a highly developed sense of smell, Wright and his team thought they might be able to use the bees' chemical alarm signal to affect elephant behavior. So the researchers tested out chemicals that imitate honeybees' alarm. In Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa, the team hung white socks treated with the mixture as well as untreated control socks around an elephant watering hole, and then observed the animals' behavior. “Elephants are really curiousorganisms, they'll walk along and see something like a sock hanging on a
branch in the environment, and they'll inspect it, and if it's not treated with the alarm, they'll pick it up, throw it around, try to taste it, things like that.” And in the case of the treated ones, we found that they would show immediate signs of unease or uncertainty, and they'd eventually back off from them. Next up, the researchers plan to refine the mixture, in order to get an even stronger avoidance response from elephants.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五 Carri Kessler and her husband Will named their daughter Ottilie after a friend from the UK, who helped them a lot. 1 “No one could remember her name and no one could pronounce it. We're going to keep having to introduce her!” Kessler told View.  The situation then grew worse as Kessler's grandmother admitted to sticking Post-It notes around the house to help remind her of Ottilie's name. 2 Three months after Ottilie was born, the Kesslers have decided to legally change their daughter's name. The couple came up with two possible names. 3

The Kesslers' situation is not uncommon as an increasing number of parents experience the same as the Kesslers. According to Baby Center Canada, 11% of its users wish they could change their children's names due to being over popular, mispronounced or simply unfitting. 4   To deal with this, a number of name experts now offer services to help parents choose the right name. Couples have also sought help from the Internet to choose their baby's name. 5
