Li Shizhen was a Chinese medical scientist in Ming period. He was born about 500 years ago, on July 3rd, 1518. Li's grandfather and father hoped he could get a government position, but he failed the national exam three times. Then he turned to medicine. At the age of 38, he became an official in the prince palace. After a few years, he got a government position in Beijing. But a year later, he returned to being a doctor. In his government position, Li read lots of medical books, and found many mistakes in some of them. This gave him an idea of writing a book, providing correct and clear information on medicine. He then spent 27 years writing his world­famous scientific book, Ben Cao Gang Mu. The book introduced more than 1, 800 Chinese medical plants. It also described the type, form, taste, nature and use of 1, 094 of them. It has been the most important work of traditional Chinese medicine in history.
