John Dominis was one of the staff photographers of LIFE Magazine. He joined LIFE in 1950 and shot one of the most classic pictures of the 20th century; Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving the black power salute at the Olympics in Mexico.

Here, LIFE looks back at one of his lesser-known shoots - the African antelope, which was a cover story that earned him Magazine Photographer of the year in 1966 and later became a book. In the Editor's Note that accompanies the story, Dominis described how he was able to get the dramatic photo without a telephoto lens.

“I wanted to get low-angle shots that gave a dramatic sense of their speed. I built boxes and mounted cameras inside of them” Dominis explained. “John and I worked for three weeks with them. We'd go a mile ahead of a herd and put down the boxes and hid them. Then we'd hide a quarter of a mile away and wait maybe for several hours. Meanwhile the light might change and there was no way I could change the exposure on the cameras. If the animal reached the boxes, I pushed the button that set off the cameras by a radio signal and ran off a whole roll of film. I must have exposed 40 rolls, but ended up with only one really good photo.”

The Briscoe Center recently acquired John Dominis's works. “These pictures and collections have something to say about how Americans perceive the outside world” said Ben Wright of the Briscoe Center. “They are not only beautiful and interesting; they're historical evidence that help historians to understand the past with accuracy and integrity.

    24. What contributed to Dominis' winning Magazine Photographer of the year in 1966?

     A. His close cooperation with John  B. His qualified skills in photography.

     C. His photo of the African Antelope.  D. His famous shots about the Olympics.

    25. What does the underlined word “mounted” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

     A. Fixed. B. Added. C. Adjusted. D. Focused.

    26. What would Dominis do if the antelope reached the boxes?

     A. Signal to the radio.  B. Operate the camera remotely.

     C. Press the button on the camera  D. Hide a quarter of a mile away.

    27. Which best described Dominis at work?

     A. Flexible and modest.  B. Curious and independent.

     C. Knowledgeable and positive. D. Creative and determined.

    C

As the new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting whizzes and bangs to light up the sky. The appeal of fireworks could fizzle out with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows, though.

Ollie Howitt, a leader of SkyMagic, which used a team of 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year celebration last year, said demand had increased substantially. “We do think it’s going to be something that’s ever catching on, as opposed to it being a short-lived sort of fashion people have suddenly got interested in. Drones are reusable and there's no fallout. In that sense they’re a very good, sustainable option, she said.

But not everyone agrees. A spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have serious concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium batteries which are known not to be all that 'green’," they said.

An RSPCA spokesperson said that while drones were a possible idea to try to reduce the impact of displays on animals, there were downsides. “Drones are not without their own negative issues such as scaring horses or crashing into birds and can cause disturbance to animals and members of the public. It’s therefore important for their effects to be fully considered and measures taken to minimize the chance of accidents," they said.

Some express the opinion that the use of fireworks and drones don’t exclude each other. The sight sound and gunpowder smell of fireworks will always provide its own unique thrill.

“We find fireworks work really well when teamed up with drones. But we don’t really see it as a one-replacing-the-other at all. We feel as if it’s just another tool in the chest for how you enliven the sky and what you want to do with the show you’re putting on,” said Howitt, noting that while fireworks give a loud, emotive, big performance, drones offer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of images.

    28. What does the underlined phrase “fizzle out” in paragraph 1 mean?

     A. Catch on. B. Wind up C. Spring up. D. Cancel out.

    29. What does Howitt think about a drone display in paragraph 2?

     A. It's definitely an upward trend. B. It’ll get us to reflect on energy crisis.

     C. It's nothing but a temporary phenomenon.  D. It’ll fuel the public curiosity about science.

    30. Which of the following may Howitt suggest according to the last paragraph?

     A. Promoting the production of drones.  B. Diversifying the functions of drones.

     C. Prohibiting the displays of fireworks. D. Staging drone shows as an alternative.

    31. In which section of a website can we read this text?

     A. Advertisement. B. Business. C. Health. D. Environment.

    D

It’s likely that you don’t think you have invited a spy into your home when setting up a new TV. But new Samsung, LG and Vizio smart TVs can record and share everything that is viewed, whether it’s a broadcast or something streaming from the Internet. And some smart TVs can even track what DVD you’re watching.

Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some products to the show you are already watching. The ads are primarily popups like the ones you see on you computer.

You might not realize that you allowed that data collection when you agreed to the long privacy policy during setup; with Samsung, it is 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to sign away your privacy in thousands of words in fine print.

When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn’t make any comment. An LG representative said that the company isn’t using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time.

You might think, “Well, why don’t I just turn those marketing features off?” It's not always so easy. To stop manufacturers' tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to “settings”, then “options”, then “Live plus”, click “off’, and then close. With Vizio, it’s a voyage through three menus to turn off the box “Smart Interactivity”. With Samsung, it’s a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.

Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of extra scenes which are related to the shows you’re watching. But maybe that's a small price to pay for knowing that what you’re watching remains private.

    32. What might the marketers use your viewing habits to do?

     A. To improve the quality of smart TVs.

     B. To collect some suggestions about shows.

     C. To recommend shows or advertise products.

     D. To build a strong relationship between produces and customers.

    33. How does Consumer Reports find the comment made by an LG representative?

     A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Reasonable. D. Approving.

    34. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?

     A. How we learn to use TVs settings.  B. How we can become wise customers.

     C. How we send personal information to others. D. How we stop our viewing from being tracked.

    35. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?

     A. It’s worthwhile to turn marketing features off.

     B. People should keep their watching habits a secret.

     C. TVs’ marketing features should be further developed.

     D. TV producers should apologize to customers for their misbehavior.

     B. The big impact is that it teaches them initiative.

One day an elderly postman knocked on the door of a house and asked if there was anyone to take the letter. As soon as he said this, a little girl's voice echoed (回响) from inside, but even after 5 minutes no one came out.

"Can anyone help you take the letter? I have to go to many more places." the postman said again.

"Uncle, if you are in a hurry, please put the letter under the door. It will take me more time. " the girl replied.

"No, it is a registered letter. Someone's signature is needed." the postman yelled.

Another 10 minutes past, there's no response. The postman got a bit cross about the delay, and he was about to shout when the door opened. He was shocked to see in front of him was a little girl with no legs. Speechless, he gave the letter quietly, took her signature and left. That day he got her name, Sally.

Sally often lived alone. Her mother died at an early age and her father used to work far away. A maid (女仆) was invited to stay with her in the morning and evening except the day. In a month or two, mails were delivered regularly, and their interaction and attachment grew. Sally noticed that the postman used io come barefoot. Rainy season came. One day when the postman left her home, his footprints were left on wet soil. Sally struggled out with a paper and put it on print and took down the picture of his feet. She asked her maid to get shoes of that size and kept them in a box.

Diwali (排灯节) was around the corner. During Diwali, the postman used to deliver mails and got Diwali gifts from the people who got mails. But when he thought about Sally, he started thinking that he shouldn't meet the girl empty-handed during the festival. After much thought he bought some chocolate for the little girl.
