A national park is created for the purpose of conservation. Yellowstone National Park in the US was the first national park in the world. Here are some other national parks in the world.
Northeast Greenland National Park, Denmark
The national park is the largest one in the world. It covers an area of 927,000 km². It is also the most northern national park in the world.
Around 5,000 to 15,000 musk oxen (麝香牛) as well as polar bears live in the park. Some of the birds also live there.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Australia
The park is the second largest national park in the world. It protects a large part of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef from being damaged in any way.
All commercial ships must stay on specific shipping routes that avoid the most sensitive areas of the park. The Great Barrier Reef has the world’s largest number of corals and other sea life.
Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, Mozambique
This national park covers an area of 99,800 km². It joins some of the famous wildlife areas in southern Africa into a huge conservation area.
In 2006, the Giriyondo tourist access between the Limpopo and Kruger national parks was opened. There were 5,000 animals moving from Kruger to Limpopo National Park, including over 1,000 elephants.
Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada
The park was created in 1922 to protect the wood bison(森林野牛) whose population had dropped from 40 million in 1830 to less than 1000 by 1900.
The park consists of 44,807 square kilometers of northern plains. It is also the world’s only natural living place of the cranes(鹤).

Serama chickens are the smallest in the world, but you really can’t tell by their attitude. Seeing them pose with their head rising and chest sticking out, you’d think they were feathered bodybuilders(健美运动员).
The Serama chicken breed(饲养) can go back all the way to the 1600s, to the Kelantan province of Malaysia, but the current one needs to thank Wee Yean Een, a breeder who made it popular during the 1970s and even gave the chicken the Serama name, after King Rama of Thailand. However, the breed almost died out by the bird flu of the early 2000s. Luckily, they had already been exported to many countries around the world by that point, including the UK, and were able to make a comeback.
Today, Serama chickens are once again booming(兴起), especially in Asian countries like Vietnam, where chicken enthusiasts breed them for posing competitions, where the chickens try to look as pompous(自大的) as possible. It actually comes natural to them, as they are known as the athletes of the chicken world, because of their proud pose.
Seramas have a strong body, but it is visually amplified by their athletic pose. They cock their head back and push their large chest out, while lifting one of their legs and shaking their wings. It’s like they’re trying to make up for their small size with their posing.
Serama chicken competitions are popular in countries like Malaysia and Vietnam. They don’t focus on the size of the chickens, but on their pompous pose, walking style and the color of their feather.
4. What does the underlined word “amplified” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Spread. B. Improved. C. Enlarged. D. Represented.
5. What is the character that Serama chicken competitions care about?
A. The size of the chickens. B. The posture of the chickens.
C. Whether the chickens are popular. D. Whether the chickens are intelligent.
6. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Wee Yean Een — A Breeder Who Raises the Serama
B. Serama Chicken Matches — Popular Ones in Asia
C. Serama Chickens — the Great Pets for Bird Lovers
D. Serama Chickens — the Smallest but Pompous Birds
C
For the general public confused by the heated discussion on human cloning, A Clone of Your Own? does an admirable job in explaining many of the ethical(伦理的) and scientific problems. Drawing from literature, the visual arts, films and her personal experiences, Arlene Judith Klotzko has created an overview of cloning.
Klotzko tells us about the early experiments that Aristotle did with chicken embryos(胚胎); about a German scientist, Hans Spemann, who figured out the theory of cloning some sixty years before we actually succeeded in cloning; about Dolly, the first cloned sheep at Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute; and about the current successes and failures in attempts to cloning.
The book paints a picture of human cloning as a worthwhile job. Klotzko lists many potential benefits that cloning could have. She also, following several others, makes clear many of the common misunderstanding concerning cloning, and puts in plain words the limited effect that genes have on shaping the kind of people we become.
A Clone of Your Own? provides clear explanations of both the basic scientific and ethical problems surrounding cloning. Klotzko appears to have drawn on a wide range of published work on the ethics of cloning, and makes a large number of the arguments in the literature in this short book. However, readers who are unaware of the literature may be left with the impression that Klotzko is the first and the only person to have written on the ethics of cloning, which is far from the case. It is a pity that the author and the publisher have provided so little reference to the ethics literature and given so little sign that they are aware of it. Whether one’s interest lies in the science or the ethics of cloning, the short list of further reading provided at the end of the book is unhelpful and misleading.
But this warning aside, the drawings in this book and Klotzko’s words make the book highly approachable. The public who would like to understand what the debate on human cloning is should read this book.
7. What does Klotzko tell us in A Clone of Your Own?
A. Aristotle gave the theory of cloning. B. Dolly is the earliest cloned animal.
C. Spemann cloned the first sheep. D. Cloning is a heated topic.
8. What is Klotzko’s attitude towards cloning?
A. Positive. B. Negative.
C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Klotzko is the first to write on the ethics of cloning.
B. Publishers offer much reference to ethics literature.
C. The list of further reading provided in the book is helpful.
D. Klotzko makes lots of arguments in the literature.
10. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To recommend a book. B. To explain a problem.
C. To remember a writer. D. To introduce a discussion.

Fill...with...“用…… 故填with。
故填to express/expressing。

故you改为I。
故but改为and。
故while改为when。
故which改为whose。
故删除of。
