It was the summer of my 16th year. I was 2,000 miles away from home and my heart was aching. I had travelled from the mountains of West Virginia to the great plains of Iowa. I was with a group of boys touring a college.
When the trip first started, I was filled with excitement. It was going to be a week of adventure, a week of travel, and the change of starting on a new path in my life. Now five days later I was filled with sadness. I missed my Mom. I missed my Dad. I missed my old, Italian grandmother. I missed the mountains, the green trees, and the smell of the wild flowers in the summertime.
I walked outside and sat down on a chair. I knew that I was at a crossroads and that the decision I was about to make would affect the rest of my life. This college had sounded so good to me a few weeks before. Now, however, I knew that I could never go to college here.
Since that day I have been at many crossroads in my life. Sometimes I have made the wrong choice and have to give up to make things right. More often than not, though, I have felt greatly encouraged and made the choices that took me where I needed to go and helped me to become who I needed to be. Through all this, I have felt my confidence grow deeper and the love in my heart grow stronger. And that, more than anything, has kept me on the right road.
Life is a long and difficult journey but we all can take comfort in knowing that we are loved and watched over every step of the way. Let love guide your steps and you will always be on your own path.
    24. What did the author do that summer?
    A. He visited a college. B. He studied at a college.
    C. He camped in the mountains. D. He took a college examination.
    25. Why did the author feel sad later during the travel?
    A. He hated the college. B. He fell homesick.
    C. He wasn’t pleased with the schedule. D. He couldn’t go home for a long time.
    26. What did the author think of the decision about whether to go to that college?
    A. Risky. B. Easy. C. Common. D. Important.
    27. What is the author’s attitude towards most of his decisions?
    A. Regretful. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Unclear.

Lin-Manuel Miranda began writing what would become In the Heights as a university student. The musical play would make him a playwright and performer. Now, 20 years later, it has been made into a movie, which is in theaters for its first weekend.
Miranda said like other artists, he was driven by dream but also by something else. “It was a lot of fear, honestly,” Miranda said in a recent interview. “I was 18, 19 and starting to study the theater. The fear was: I’m going into a domain that has no space for me, that has no roles for me. It was sort of that thing: No one’s going to write your dream show.”
In the Heights opened on June 10. It celebrates many things: the Latino immigrant experience, neighborhood communities in New York City and life itself.
The movie was supposed to be shown last June, but was stopped by COVID-19. The film’s director, however, thinks the delay (推迟) was not necessarily a bad thing. Moviegoers might be ready for some energetic music, singing and dancing after a year of limited life.
Many performers acting in the first In the Heights Broadway show appear in the movie’s final song and dance. Students from a nearby high school also can be seen in the film. The students had produced their own In the Heights show which the filmmakers watched and found moving.
Others starring in the movie include Leslie Grace as Nina Rosano, a college student home for the summer; Corey Hawkins as Benny, a taxi driver; and Melissa Barrera as Vanessa, a beauty salon worker trying to get her own home. Thirty-year-old Barrera said the part she plays as a young woman searching for a better future away from home — is basically herself.
    28. What can we infer about Miranda from the first paragraph?
    A. He was good at performance.
    B. He had no role to act in university.
    C. He directed a movie during university.
    D. He acted in a play he had written himself.
    29. What does the underlined word “domain” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Field. B. Game. C. Future. D. Trouble.
    30. What does the film’s director think of the delay of the film?
    A. Unnecessary. B. Helpful. C. Unacceptable. D. Exciting.
    31. What can be learned about Barrera?
    A. She spent her summer holiday at home.
    B. She acted as a taxi driver in the movie.
    C. She has the same experience as her role.
    D. She appears in the movie’s final song and dance.

Some 3,000 tern (燕鸥) eggs were given up at a Southern California island after a drone (无人机) dropped and drove off the birds, a newspaper reported in June.
In May, two drones were flown over the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, California. One of them went down in the wetlands. Fearing an attack from an enemy, several thousand terns gave up their ground-based nests (巢).
Usually during June, the white birds would be watching their eggs. But now, the sand is filled with eggshells.
Melissa Loebl is the manager of the protected area, which is about 160 km north of San Diego, California. Last year, the pandemic (疫情) brought more and more people to outdoor spaces. In 2020, about 100,000 visitors came to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. That is up from about 60,000 in 2019, she told the newspaper.
That has led to an increase in human activities, including flying drones, walking dogs, and riding bicycles. All these activities are not permitted. There has been a great increase in dogs, particularly those permitted to run free. She explained that this is especially bad during the season when the birds lay eggs. “The dogs run after the birds, and the birds give up their eggs,” she said.
Another problem is the development of multimillion-dollar homes near the protected area. The owners feel they should he able to use the land as they like. Officials, however, are taking more action and fining people who break the rules.
The protected area is the largest saltwater wetland between Monterey Bay just south of San Francisco and the Tijuana River Estuary in Mexico. Some 800 kinds of plants and animals live at or travel to Bolsa Chica.
    32. Why did the birds give up their eggs?
    A. They thought their enemy was coming.
    B. Their ground-based homes were unsafe.
    C. They had planned to build new nests.
    D. They hated the loud noise of the drone.
    33. Which of the following might come from the pandemic?
    A. People needed more pets. B. People loved nature more.
    C. People valued their health more. D. People preferred to stay outdoors.
    34. What do we know about the people near the protected area?
    A. They try to protect birds. B. They care little about nature.
    C. They build houses everywhere. D. They are against the development.
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Drone Flying Should Be Stopped B. Broken Eggs Need to Be Saved
    C. Human Activities Hurt Wildlife Greatly D. 3,000 Eggs Were Left After Drone Feared Birds

F 37. C 38. G 39. A 40. B
    1. 根据后一句“They can also sit on other surfaces such as walls, or front steps.(它们也可以放在其他表面,如墙壁,或前台阶。)”可知,这里讲述的是窗槛花箱能放置的位置,且这句中的“also”表明,空出说的应该是窗槛花箱通常放置的位置,所以F项“Window boxes are not just for the outside edge of the window.(窗槛花箱不只是用于窗户的外边缘。)”
    2. 根据上文“Before choosing plants, check your window box place for light and rain.(在选择植物之前,检查一下你的窗槛花箱处是否有光和雨。)”以及后文“So, they need more water. And if a window box is close to a wall or other buildings, it may not get enough rainwater.(所以,它们需要更多的水。如果窗槛花箱靠近墙壁或其他建筑物,可能得不到足够的雨水。)”可知,空前指出要检查一下窗槛花箱处是否有光和雨,空后指出所以它们需要更多的水,由此可推知,空处应该是说明检查窗槛花箱处是否有光和雨的原因,和下文构成因果关系。C项“Window boxes dry out faster than ground plants.(窗槛花箱比地面植物干得快。)”
    3. 根据上文“Even if all your windows get little sun, do not give up. Browne, a famous gardener, says one of her greatest successes is a beautiful window box in a full-shade area.(即使你所有的窗户都没什么阳光,也不要放弃。布朗尼是一位著名的园丁,她说她最大的成就之一就是在一个完全荫凉的地方有个漂亮的窗槛花箱。)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,承接上文继续介绍布朗尼,故G项“She gets a great look by using plants and flowers that don’t need much sun.(她通过使用不需要太多阳光的植物和花朵来获得美丽的外观。)”
    4. 根据上文“So, what makes some window boxes different while others are just so-so? Create a topic!(那么,是什么让一些窗槛花箱与众不同,而另一些则一般呢?创建一个主题!)”可知,上文提到为窗槛花箱创建一个主题,结合下文“For example, you may have a window box that is filled with all cactuses or all plants fit for eating.(例如,你可能有个窗槛花箱,里面装满了仙人掌或者所有适合食用的植物。)”可知,下文举例子说明要为窗槛花箱创建主题,由此可推出,A项“This is a main idea for the plants.(这是关于植物的主要思路。)”
    5. 根据后文“People who have really nice window boxes cut off anything dead. They also water their window boxes often and change things a lot.(那些有漂亮窗槛花箱的人会把任何死的东西都剪掉。他们还经常给窗槛花箱浇水,经常更换东西。)”可知,后文提到有漂亮窗槛花箱的人会清理照顾窗槛花箱,可见照顾关心窗槛花箱也很重要。故B项“Besides having a topic, caring is important.(除了有一个话题,关心也很重要。)”

所给动词steal在句中作宾语补足语,固定短语allow sb. to do sth. 故填to steal。
固定搭配whether...or... 故填or。
固定短语be thankful for表示“因……而感恩”,符合题意。故填for。
