I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, U.S., raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of myself.
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even when my electricity was cut off and I woke up at 5:30 a.m. to pitch blackness, I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn’t have had me closer to my goal. Even poverty could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down.
Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

Aging is often mentioned in relation to smart homes. Technology can help older people stay independent and safe, and avoid the difficult transition to institutional care. Cox Communications display their new smart home in which every device is “smart”. A strong internet connection is central to their product, and the company also provides a network for other service providers.
The smart home is not only controlled far away, this home — called Home Life — also features direct connections to family members and health professionals. For example, a person can perform their physiotherapy (物理疗法) far away from home with online live guidance from a physiotherapist. Or, their relatives who live in another state can pop in and out through their smartphone or tablet, so the loved ones are always there if required.
This super smart home also includes a smart pill container, a smart pot to water your plants, and motion sensors for indoors and outdoors which are useful for fall detection, as well as an automatic barcode scanner (条码扫描仪) linked to the home trash can so that the packaging gets scanned when it is thrown and the consumed items are added to the user’s shopping list.
In a modern smart home, many activities that are important to independent living can be monitored, and assistance is provided on an as-needed basis. If something is out of place — for example, a person has an accidental fall or doesn’t take their medicine — family can be informed immediately. However, the person living in the smart home maintains his or her autonomy and sense of independence.
8. What is the advantage of Home Life?
A. Efficiency in shopping. B. Remote access to physicians.
C. Safety protection of home from danger. D. Kids’ development of independence.
9. The underlined phrase “pop in and out” means closely to ______.
A. take an order B. stand out C. turn up D. leave a message
10. Which of the following situations can be avoided soon in the smart home?
A. Seniors forgetting the medicine. B. Teenagers being late for school.
C. Rooms being locked for privacy. D. Wet floors causing people to fall.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Family-friendly Remote Control B. Smart Home Benefiting the Seniors
C. Aging Resolved in the Community D. Seniors’ Home-based Online Connection
One of the proven benefits of reading is that it helps to build a stronger memory. But does it matter if you read the words on a page or listen to them?
In a 2016 study, one group of readers were asked to listen to an excerpt (摘录) from the audiobook version of Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, while another group read the same excerpt on an e-reader. A third group read and listened at the same time.
All participants were then given a quiz to measure how well they had absorbed the material. It was concluded that participants were able to recall as much from reading as they were from listening.
Reading has been proven to provide a number of benefits to your brain, and make you smarter overall. However, science also tells us that listening to audiobooks can also have very positive effects on the brain. For example, according to a study by the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, our brains are more likely to create meaningful images when we listen to stories, as opposed to reading them in a traditional format. That’s because when we listen instead of reading, our brains are allowed more space for their visual processes to do their things.
In addition, audiobooks can also help boost your comprehension and vocabulary as much as their print and digital versions. Audio versions might even have an extra advantage for those of us learning English as a second language or teaching kids to read, since proper pronunciation will be guaranteed. This benefit can be enhanced by following along with the text while listening to the audio.
There’s no doubt that both reading and listening to books do some great good to your brain and overall well-being. Thankfully, a great read (or listen) is more accessible than you’d think! There are dozens of free and cheap print books, audiobooks, and e-books out there waiting to be discovered!
12. How was the 2016 study carried out?
A. By giving examples. B. By doing interviews.
C. By analyzing causes and effects. D. By making a comparison.
13. Why was a quiz given to all participants?
A. To strengthen their memory. B. To improve their ability.
C. To test their learning effects. D. To understand their personalities.
14. What can we learn about the study in paragraph 4?
A. Listening creates mental pictures. B. Reading results in a better memory.
C. Reading turns visual processes into reality. D. Listening improves our imagination.
15. In terms of language learning, audiobooks ______.
A. ensure greater fluency in learners’ language speaking
B. bring about greater effect combined with text reading
C. account for greater share of resources than paper ones
D. become digital once its paper-based versions come out

Bill McDonnell was going crazy. Deer season had begun, but it was colder than usual. Up until his late 80s, Bill didn’t mind hunting in sub-zero temperature, but he had become slow in the past few years. The snow-covered mountains of the Shenandoah Valley were no place for a 92-year-old. He knew it, but still wanted to get outside.
It was about 7:30 a.m., still far below zero when the sun shone through trees. Bill had strict instructions from his wife Joanna to be out of woods by 2 p.m. and home by 3 p.m. — plenty of time before sunset, in case he missed the deadline, which he often did.
Not long into the hike, he came upon a path he didn’t remember. Maybe this was a secret route to the king of all deer. He took it.
It seemed that this path up the mountain had meandered (蜿蜒) quite a bit. After climbing to the top of a ridge (山脊), he figured that he could continue down into another valley for more hunt. But the farther he snaked down, the thinner and deeper it became. Before long, he was looking straight up from down the ravine (沟壑), which was higher than expected.
He decided to climb back up, careful with each step. He kept pushing upward until finally he could rest at the top for a while. By the time he got going again, it was nearly 2:45 p.m. This time he saw a trail (小路) with white marks. He remembered his daughter had mentioned it before, which he thought might take him back home more quickly.
He called his daughter, but she didn’t remember the trail, begging him not to try that. Still he wanted to go on the trail. “I’ve got it figured out,” he said. Then suddenly he realized he was talking to the air. His phone had died. He dug into his pants for the GPS device and pushed the “ON” button. Nothing. He had forgotten to charge it. But nothing could discourage him from going on this trail.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Initially the trail seemed to be heading downward in the correct direction home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
The following morning, Bill had woken before dawn, continued down his trail and still imagined his wife’s anxiety.

2. 根据后文“Yet it is not ideal for drying wet bathing suits quickly. Avoid the uncomfortable sensation of having to put on a cold, damp swimsuit by bringing more than one.(然而,快速烘干湿泳衣并不理想。多带一件泳衣来避免穿又冷又湿的泳衣带来的不舒服感觉。)”可知,后文提到多带一件泳衣来避免穿又冷又湿的泳衣带来的不舒服感觉,可见夏威夷的天气不适合衣服快速变干,所以C项“夏威夷的天气温暖潮湿,是热带度假的理想之地”符合语境,故选C。
3. 根据上文“You’re most likely going to be spending the majority of your time in Hawaii wearing a bathing suit. So don’t bother to pack too many shorts and T-shirts. Throw in just a few pairs of casual shorts and some T-shirts, and you’ll be outfitted just fine for almost any activity.(你在夏威夷的大部分时间很可能都穿着泳衣。所以不要带太多的短裤和T恤。再加上几条休闲短裤和几件T恤,你几乎可以适合任何活动。)”可知,上文提到大部分时间很可能都穿着泳衣,不要带太多短裤和T恤,本句说明原因:由于你大部分时间都在海滩上,泳衣几乎适合所有的事情。所以F项“由于你大部分时间都在海滩上,泳衣几乎适合所有的事情”符合语境,故选F。
4. 根据本段内容“You may pack plenty of high-quality sunscreen for your trip to Hawaii. But make sure that you choose a brand that’s considered to be safer for coral reefs. The chemicals from traditional sunscreen have done great damage to them. Keep your skin safe from the sun while also protecting the reefs by choosing environmentally-friendly cosmetics.(去夏威夷旅行时,你可能会带很多高质量的防晒霜。但要确保你选择的品牌被认为对珊瑚礁更安全。传统防晒霜中的化学物质对它们造成了巨大的损害。选择环保的化妆品,保护你的皮肤不受阳光的伤害,同时也保护珊瑚礁。)”可知,本段主要是针对防晒霜类型进行了说明,选择环保化妆品。所以B项“很好的珊瑚礁安全防晒霜”符合语境,故选B。
5. 根据上文“It can be easy to get carried away by Hawaii’s natural beauty and forget that you’re holding your smartphone while standing in the ocean or a swimming pool.(人们很容易被夏威夷的自然美景冲昏头脑,忘记自己站在海里或游泳池里拿着智能手机。)”以及后文“Invest in a waterproof case so that you can safely take photos anywhere, even underwater.(买一个防水的保护套,这样你就可以安全地在任何地方拍照,即使是在水下。)”

故填were attached。
Mount Jiuzong 为主语,was为系动词,close to present Xi’an为表语,设空处需填非谓语动词作状语,由于Mount Jiuzong和动词serve之间是逻辑上的主谓关系,所以此处需用现在分词形式serving。故填serving。
分析句子结构,主语是Two reliefs,系动词是are,表语是at the Pennsylvania Museum,则该句逗号后的成分是独立主格结构,设空处需填分词,the other four是分词的逻辑主语,由于动词lay与the other four之间是逻辑上的动宾关系,所以lay需用过去分词形式laid。故填laid。
故填the或its。
be named after是固定短语,意为“以……命名”,所以设空处需填after。故填after。
It is (not) the first time that后面的从句需用现在完成时,所以此处需用现在完成时,从句的主语historians是复数,所以充当从句谓语的动词discover需用复数形式。故填have discovered。

A Visit to the Natural Science Museum
A wonderful visit to the Natural Science Museum was organized by our school this Friday afternoon, with over 100 students taking part.
The Museum featured an enormous number of scientific experiments on display, where students will acquire a good knowledge of their processes and significance. What was most impressive was that students could conduct part of the experiments on their own, thus developing their interest in science.
For those with great fondness of science, not only has this experience broadened their horizon, but also it has stimulated their determination to step into the course of science.

Initially the trail seemed to be heading downward in the correct direction home. However, soon, it began to turn away. So he decided to take another shortcut, stopping occasionally to adjust course. “No, I am not lost,” he told himself, determined that he wasn’t far off his destination. Eventually, the sun slipped down and the forest turned black. Without a flashlight, his trembling legs felt as if to have covered many miles. He tried to sleep, yet unable to quiet himself from imagining Joanna’s possible anxiety for safety. He got up to power through the darkness, only to realize he would end up in greater danger.
The following morning, Bill had woken before dawn, continued down his trail and still imagined his wife’s anxiety. The light was still bad, with each step taking thoughts to avoid injuries. Within 15 minutes, hope was found from the line of trees expected to reach. Bill, extremely excited about this breakthrough, was heading in that direction when he encountered a group of trackers who’d come to his rescue for the whole night. Secured and finally sent home, he was discouraged from another attempt to hike alone and he was persuaded to keep his promise. Yet still, deep in his wildest dream, there still lived a young boy, forever insisting on his crazy idea of walking in these woods alone.
