I’m now living in the south of France with my husband Keith and three small children, and I feel like a fish out of water everywhere but one place — the Saturday street market. It’s been operating in our small town of Sommieres since the 13th century, but we’ve only lived here for three months.
From Monday to Friday, life is all about the kids. I’m busy helping my children deal with life in a French school. It’s not easy, and their stress is the whole family’s stress, as Keith and I are occupied with the daily school runs, piles of homework and school notes in French.
But on Saturday, the market is for me. I feel so peaceful as I walk along the quiet street toward the busy town square. The knife-sharpening man is there, operating a machine that looks like it dates from the Industrial Revolution. There’re street musicians with guitars and microphones, and the sound of beautiful songs fills the air. And the food, of course, is delicious. The cheese man doesn’t speak — he just points and cuts, offering a piece from his knife. Lines come out of the door for fresh bread at the bakery. Organic vegetables, herbs and desserts are a feast for the eyes, before being put into the bag to be enjoyed later for lunch. The noises and smells of the market are unfamiliar and thrilling, but their procedures are clear to me. This is part of why I love the place so much: Unlike during the week, when I’m constantly faced with my own difficulties, I know how this place works. My terrible French isn’t the barrier to communication that it is in other circumstances.
At school and in the village, I can’t joke or join a conversation, and although the other parents at the school are kind, I’m an outsider. But at the market, I’m just another customer with a basket. Surrounded by day trippers, I feel like a local — greeting people I know and petting dogs.
My Saturday experiences allow me to hope that in the near future I’ll feel equally confident in my everyday life. Until then, Saturdays prepare me for the coming week of school runs.

The time to form a new habit depends on the person, the habit itself, the environment, and the motivation. Generally speaking, 60 days is good enough for getting a new habit formed, but some habits could take twice as long. Some habits will never be formed no matter how much time passes. Even a habit that takes months or years to form can still be broken eventually.
Becoming an early riser was really challenging. I struggled with this habit for years to manage to form it. I do break this habit now and then, usually by choice to experience something different for a while. In the past 90 days, I have stayed in bed past 5 a.m. perhaps only two or three times. It takes me less than a week to be back with it. Remembering the benefits surely helps.
In my 20s I was too impatient with many habits. If I couldn’t get something working in a few weeks, I’d often drop it and try something else. Now that I’m in my late 40s, I have learned to think in a more practical way. I know that even if it takes many months or years to form a new habit, I am sure the habit could bring advantages for many years. It doesn’t take me too long to think of carrying out the new habit, I just get it started. When you think about a habit that you have stuck to for many years, who cares if it took a few weeks or six months to form it?
Don’t worry so much about how long it takes to form a habit. Instead, consider which habits could improve the quality of your life so that they are worthy of six months to get them formed. When a habit forms at last, it feels uncomfortable not to do it, and your day doesn’t feel complete without it.
8. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. We have to keep the habits once formed.
B. Most habits can be formed quickly.
C. We need sixty days to form a new habit.
D. The time to form habits varies greatly.
9. Why does the writer break the habit of getting up early sometimes?
A. He likes sleeping in bed for a while. B. He wants to try something different.
C. He prepares breakfast for the family. D. He is afraid to wake up his family.
10. What does the writer think more about the habit when he is in his forties?
A. The development of the habit. B. The expense of the habit.
C. The benefits of the habit. D. The limitation of the habit.
11. In which part of a magazine is this text most probably taken from?
A. Education.
B. Technology.
C. Tourism.
D. Literature.
Parents usually teach their children how to cross the street safely, by looking both ways for cars. But do they also teach them to put away their cell phones?
The city of Honolulu, Hawaii wants everyone to learn that lesson. Texting while crossing the street will soon be banned in the city. Beginning on October 24, you could be fined from $15 to $99 if you step onto a Honolulu street while looking at your phone. Honolulu is the first major U. S. city to ban what is called “distracted walking”. It recently passed a law in a seven-to-two vote. The law says:“No pedestrian shall cross a street or highway while viewing a mobile electronic device (装置).” In other words, do not look at a screen when you cross the street or you could be fined.
The law’s creators hope it will lower the number of people hit and killed by cars in the city. Mayor Kirk Caldwell told Reuters news agency, “We hold the unfortunate distinction of being a major city with more pedestrians being hit in crosswalks, particularly our seniors, than that of almost any other cities in the country.”
The law includes all electronic devices with screens: cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, digital cameras and laptop computers. The law does permit an exception. Pedestrians may use such devices in the street to call emergency services and rescue workers, such as firefighters and police officers.
Pedestrian deaths have been increasing as the use of cell phones rises. The Governors Highway Safety Association, or GHSA, says pedestrian deaths in the United States increased by 25 percent between 2010 and 2015. That trend continued in 2016 with the number of pedestrian deaths rising to almost 6,000, 11% higher than that in 2015. Other U.S. cities may follow Honolulu. The State of Washington was the first to outlaw distracted driving back in 2007. Now, 46 other states as well as D.C, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, also have laws against texting while driving.
12. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Honolulu will ban distracted walking.
B. Texting while walking draws public attention
C. More cities in the U. S. will ban texting while driving.
D. The number of people killed by cars in Honolulu is increasing.
13. In what case can people use electric devices in Honolulu streets?
A. Walking with police officers.
B. Making urgent calls.
C. Helping rescue workers.
D. Texting to consult about emergency services.
14. What does the author convey in Paragraph 5?
A. Texting while walking should be banned quickly.
B. Distracted walking caused a severe problem in Honolulu.
C. Cell phones led to more and more pedestrian deaths in the U. S.
D. Pedestrian deaths were caused by texting while walking.
15. Which U. S. state was the first to ban texting while driving?
