I think my hometown Belarus is a lucky place because it doesn't experience dangerous natural disasters such as volcano eruptions, earthquakes, or hurricanes.
However, sometimes spring floods happen in low areas of my town. It can be strong enough to damage crop fields, roads, and plants. Moreover, it is dangerous for the livestock which might die in the water. As you can see, a flood is rather harmful for the countryside.
In the summer time, hail and heavy rainstorms visit Belarus, but they never cause serious damage to buildings or people's deaths. Even though some trees or other plants might be uprooted or destroyed, people actually don't pay a lot of attention to these disasters because they don't occur very often.
In winter, we sometimes experience snowstorms with heavy snow and strong winds. Several years ago,for instance, people couldn't arrive at their jobs because a lot of snow was on the streets. Schools were closed on that day, but children weren't anxious about it. They really enjoyed the snow mountains outdoors.
As for me, I was unhappy about that day. My apartment building is located on a hill. It isn't big, so I had never had any problems with driving a car near my home. However, it took me almost two hours to arrive home from the foot of the hill because there was so much snow on the road that my car couldn't move. I had to ask people in the street to help me to push the car out of the snow. Later, when everything was over, my friends and I were laughing when we imagined how funny I was while pushing a heavy car.
As you may notice, natural disasters in my country depend on the seasons of the year. Although we experience several kinds of natural weather conditions, they are not very dangerous. And people often try to have fun during or after them.
4. What happens in the spring in the author's town?
A. Hurricanes.
B. Floods.
C. Rainstorms.
D. Snowstorms.
5. Why do people pay little attention to heavy rainstorms or hail in summer?
A. Because they are not common in the town.
B. Because it never snows in the summer.
C. Because they cause no trouble to the livestock.
D. Because there are few people in the town.
6. What was the children's feeling towards the snowstorm in winter?
A. Worried.
B. Alarmed.
C. Excited.
D. Encouraged.
7. What can we infer about the people in the town?
A. They are rude to strange people.
B. They are fond of the cold life in winter.
C. They are unsatisfied with their life.
D. They are willing to help others.
C
It has long been believed that the smart phones in our pockets are actually making us duller; but now there is evidence for it.
Researchers at the University of Texas discovered that people are worse at conducting tasks and remembering information if they have a smart phone within eye shot. In two experiments they found phones sitting on a desk or even in a pocket or handbag would distract users and lead to worse test scores even when it was set up not to disturb test subjects. The effect was measurable even when the phones were switched off, and was worse for those who were more dependent on their mobiles.
The researchers tested 520 university students on their memory and intelligence when in the presence of a smart phone to see how it affected them. Participants were told to complete tests in mathematics, memory and reasoning with their smart phones either on their desk, in their bag or pockets, or in another room. Those who had their phones on the desk recorded a 10 per cent lower score than those who left them in a different room on operational tasks, which measures working memory and focus. Those who kept their phones further out of sight in their pockets or their bags scored only slightly better than when phones were placed on desks.
The researchers found that the negative effect of having a phone within eye shot was much greater among those who said they were dependent on their smart phones. Participants who had expressed sympathy with phrases such as“I would have trouble getting through a normal day without my cellphone” and“using my cellphone makes me feel happy” performed as well as others when their phone was in a different room, but worse when it was placed on their desk.
The researchers said the effect arises because part of a smart phone users' mind is devoted to trying not to think about distractions such as whether they have any messages when the smart phone is in their sight.
8. For the people who scored the lowest, where did they put their cellphone?
A. On the desk B. In their bags.
C. In their pockets. D. In a different room.
9. Which of the following will the researchers most probably agree with?
A. People shouldn't have a smart phone.
B. Phones wouldn't distract users when switched off.
C. Those depending on mobiles are more likely to be distracted.
D. Their research has completely changed people's view on smart phones.
10. According to the study, why did cellphones affect the participants?
A. Using cellphones made them feel happy.
B. They focused on trying to ignore distractions.
C. They spent much time on the received messages.
D. They couldn't get through a day without cellphones.
11. Where does the text probably come from?
A. Book review. B. A Science fiction.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea; the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say,“This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

After having the sixth class, we jumped into action. We were divided into two groups: one group cleaned up the playground, the park and the public places while the other put the sign “No littering” at the proper places and called on our schoolmates, workers and teachers to protect our environment. After three hours' hard work, we were happy to see that our school campus looked much cleaner than before.

【答案】I knew I should do something. I went to my piggy bank and was about to break it and withdraw money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. Thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the coins rolled all over the floor. “Yes, those children need help and need the money more.” I said to myself.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he realized what had happened, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let's buy that bike together now. Then, go for a spring outing by bike.” “Thank you, Grandpa.” I was overwhelmed with happiness.
