Making my way slowly along the cliff (悬崖) face, I gazed (注视) at the great appearance of each temple I passed. As I entered the first cave and looked up at the feitian — an imagined flying god in Buddhist art, I wondered how many hundreds of thousands of others, from near and far, have looked at the same great paintings and statues.
Sometime between the 4th and 14th century, Mogao was an important Buddhist center connecting East Asia and South Asia. Hundreds of caves were carved into a cliff face running along the Daquan River. Located on the ancient Silk Road, one of the great trade routes in ancient times, it created an environment of artistic and cultural exchange between the different cultures.
My personal adventure to Dunhuang had taken me, by way of train and bus, from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lanzhou in Gansu Province, and through the Jiayu Pass. From there, I continued on through Yumen Pass, also known as the Jade Gate, and crossed the Gobi Desert to find this small and sleepy desert town, and to see these caves for myself.
As I explored the temples, I was amazed by the vividness of the paintings and statues. It was almost as though they were painted or carved the day before. I had discovered the reason why people travel.
There are more than 2,000 coloured statues that were carved 1,500 years ago. More than 1,400 statues are well-protected so they can still be appreciated. During the thousand years of artistic activity, the style of the wall paintings and statues changed. The early caves show greater Indian and Western influences, while during the Tang Dynasty the influences of Chinese painting styles became noticeable.
Today, the Mogao Caves stand out from the desert like a shinning pearl on the Silk Road.
    4. Which is the writer’s travelling route according to paragraph 3?
    A. B.
    C. D.

    A. The well-protected temples. B. The large number of tourists.
    C. The preserved coloured statues. D. Some paintings made not long ago.
    6. Which of the following best describes the wall paintings and statues?
    A. Highly developed. B. Plain. C. Culturally mixed. D. Noticeable.
    7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. Style Changes Over Years B. The Pearl of the Silk Road
    C. Influential Western Culture D. My Views on Dunhuang

In a world on fire and underwater, scientists have announced some good news: Several important tuna species have stepped back from the edge of extinction.
Two bluefin tuna species, a yellowfin, and an albacore are no longer seriously endangered or have moved off the leading international list of endangered species entirely.
The unexpectedly fast recovery speaks to the success of efforts over the past decade to end overfishing. But tuna are not the only species scientists are thinking carefully at the 2021 World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France, which is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN). Researchers warn that many other sea species continued to be imperiled. For example, more than a third of the world’s sharks are still threatened with extinction due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.
“I think the good news is that sustainable fishing industry are possible,” says Beth Polidoro, a biologist at Arizona State University. “We can eat fish without reducing the population to the point where it is on the road to dying out or extinction.” At the same time, she warns that the recovery should not encourage us to catch as many fish as we want. “We need to keep doing what’s working.” Polidoro adds.
The IUCN, which determines the world’s most endangered species on its Red List of Threatened Species, also announced at the meeting that some animals are moving in the other direction, onto the Red List. Like the Komodo dragon, a lizard, it is at particular risk from climate change.
Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the edge of dying out. But for now, people can celebrate a few wins for the animal world.
    8. What is the good news about tuna?
    A. They have been removed from the list of endangered species.
    B. The fishing of tuna has been put to an end completely.
    C. The population of some tuna species has recovered.
    D. The number of some tuna species increases slowly.
    9. What does the underlined word “imperiled” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Dangerous. B. Sustainable. C. Disappointing. D. Endangered.
    10. What can we learn from Beth Polidoro’s words?
    A. We can fish tuna as much as we want. B. Protecting tuna is a long way to go.
    C. We shouldn’t encourage tuna fishing. D. The population of tuna will reduce.
    11. Why does the writer mention “the Komodo dragon” in paragraph 5?
    A. To introduce a topic. B. To make a comparison.
    C. To explain an idea. D. To give an example.

Companies in China are welcoming a hybrid work model, which brings opportunities to creativity. And it is also a passive method for disease control and prevention, industry officials said.
About 45 percent of companies in China are providing remote (远程的) work opportunities, higher than the average level in the Asia Pacific region of 41 percent. Over 57 percent of employees like the hybrid work idea, with the preferred choice as three working days in the office and two at home, according to a survey from Linkedin, a workplace site with 50 million users in China.
Hybrid work offers benefits such as reduced time and energy spent commuting (通勤) and opportunities to hire from a global talent pool, said Wendy Purcell, Research Scholar at Harvard University. He shared opinions with Chen Yubo, Tsinghua professor and top executive of Trip Group.
Shanghai-based Trip com, the country’s biggest online tourism service provider, has already begun a hybrid work model. It asks employees in different departments to come to the office on certain dates, which may become a company-wide policy, said Jane Sun, Trip’s CEO.
As long as productivity is not negatively affected, employees may save two hours of commuting time, and engineers can have flexibility (灵活性) in their work, and it “strengthens our culture and gives them more job satisfaction”, Sun said.
Hybrid work helps connect employees spread across different regions. It also promotes social equality. “Talented employees who are working in Shanghai and Beijing now may go to work in relatively less-developed big cities like Chengdu, Wuhan, Xi’an, and Chongqing in the future,” Tsinghua professor Chen said.
But there is no one-size-fits-all model in hybrid work, especially in China. Chen agreed to embrace hybrid work but not give up the traditional model, as many jobs in China need trust and relationship that are built in an office.
Hybrid work is “the biggest change to how we work in our generation,” according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
    12. Which is true about the hybrid work model?
    A. It will be the future work model.
    B. It demands employees to work at home.
    C. It’s popular with companies in China.
    D. It’s the result of disease control and prevention.
    13. What may be the advantage of the hybrid work model?
    A. Employees can be more hard-working.
    B. It helps build up trust and relationship.
    C. It will reduce the commuting time.
    D. Employees can work in between two cities.
    14. Why does the writer state different people’s opinions?
    A. To enrich the text. B. To support his idea.
    C. To make a comparison. D. To attract the readers.
    15. What’s the author’s attitude to the new model?
    A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Supportive.
