It had been 10 years since a family in the Ozarks lost their beloved dog named Razzle. Understandably, after so much time, they’d come to accept the fact that they would never get to see their furry little friend again.
But then they received a phone call that was nothing short of a miracle — Razzle had been found!
In the decade since he went missing, Razzle has been on a long journey. He somehow managed to make his way from Herb Springs, Arkansas, to French Camp, California. That adds up to 1,600 miles!
While traveling around the city, Razzle managed to come across just the right people. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, after they discovered the sweet dog, they had him checked for a microchip. Thankfully, he did have one, and they were able to locate his family! That’s when volunteer pilot Jeremy Wade took over.
“The amazing dog transport folks out in California knew I sometimes fly to Heber Springs, and now he’s getting a ride with me back to his family after all these years,” Jeremy said.
Razzle’s long journey away from home was finally coming to a close! He was loaded safely onto the plane, and then the two of them headed to Arkansas, where the pup’s family was waiting for them.
“He’s now a very old dog, but now he can have the sunset of his life back home with his family in the Ozarks,” Jeremy said.
We can only imagine how amazed Razzle’s family was to hear the news, but the joy on their faces when they were finally reunited said it all.
Wow, what an emotional ending! There truly is nothing like the love between a family and their dog.

It’s been a roller coaster ride for pets during the pandemic (疫情). All of a sudden, their families were home 24/7. While people got fascinated with cleaning, baking, and keeping themselves entertained, curious dogs and cats sometimes ended up getting hurt by these new habits.
The increase in these new pastimes saw a corresponding increase in the number of pandemic-related pet poisonings. “Our call volume has more than doubled since pre-pandemic. This is likely due to several factors including pets getting into more things at home simply because their people are doing more things at home,” says Dr. Ahna Brutlag. “Overall chocolate still remains our number one toxin (毒质), at least for dogs, but we were surprised to see how each of those listed increased relative to pre-pandemic times. We regularly see these types of cases, but we saw a surge of them during the pandemic.”
Although many pet owners look for eco-friendly cleaning products to keep their pets safe, there was a 92% increase in pet poisonings from cleaning products. Besides using eco-friendly cleaning products, there are things you can do to keep your pets safe at home, pandemic or not. “Pets are like kids. They are opportunists and will readily consume items left around the house,” Brutlag says. She suggests that pet owners think about pet-proofing their homes in the same way that parents kid-proof their homes in order to keep dogs and cats from getting into things that can hurt them. “Also, don’t underestimate how good their noses are and how high they can jump! They are experts at smelling food on a countertop and then finding a way to access it,” Brutlag says.
And if you think that your pet has had something potentially dangerous, reach out to your veterinarian or the helpline quickly. In potential poisoning cases, she points out, time is critical.
    8. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
    A. Pets prefer to play the roller coaster ride.
    B. Working at home is a fashionable tendency.
    C. The changes of people’s life style influence pets.
    D. It’s hard for people and pets to live harmoniously.
    9. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Sharp decline. B. Sudden increase.
    C. Steady balance. D. Rapid change.
    10. What can we learn about pets from paragraph 3?
    A. Eco-friendly cleaning products can keep pets safe.
    B. Dogs and cats are usually under their owners’ control.
    C. Protecting pets is more difficult than protecting kids.
    D. Food is easily accessible to pets at home.
    11. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Pets need more love and care.
    B. Pet poisonings increase at home.
    C. A survey on pets during the pandemic.
    D. People’s fascinations with housework.
In today’s youth culture, it seems as if teens are permanently glued to their cellphones, constantly receiving beeping, buzzing and blinking social media notifications (通知). We often hear of the harm of social media to teens and young people, but our latest research on young girls and boys has revealed that social media is not always negative.
In some cases, we found that social media can positively influence their health and well-being, by helping them learn about healthy eating or new workouts to try. Besides, social media provides space for young people to talk to each other about issues of health.
For our study, conducted by researchers from the University of Birmingham and Orebro University, we invited over 1,300 young girls and boys, aged 13-18, from ten UK schools. We were interested in better understanding how young people use social media, and how they feel it impacts their health and well-being. To do this, we selected 84 participants from the main sample and had them take part in small group interviews.
The results showed that social media often had a positive influence on young people’s motivation for being physically active and on their ability to make conscious diet choices. Social media also allowed them to access the information they found inspirational, and learn about different apps they could use to be physically active or monitor their progress. They reported that likes, comments, and views on their social media posts also helped them stay motivated to exercise.
Encouragingly, the young people we spoke to were also highly discerning users of social media. They thought carefully about the content they were engaging with online. For instance, the teenagers reported that they would often ignore content that had the potential to lead to harm, such as images or videos that presented unrealistic workouts or expectations for their bodies.
While the risks should certainly not be overlooked, our findings show that social media can have a positive effect on young people’s health and well-being. A benefit of social media is that it provides real-time, low-cost information, and support from their peers. Making young people use social media safely, critically and responsibly may thus help them continue to lead a healthy life.
    12. What is the main finding of the latest research mentioned in the text?
    A. Young people make better use of social media.
    B. Teenagers use social media more than expected.
    C. Social media proves beneficial to young people.
    D. New evidence adds to the harm of social media.
    13. How did the researchers carry out their study?
    A. They made thorough analyses at two universities.
    B. They collected data from the database of ten UK schools.
    C. They referred to the findings of several previous studies.
    D. They conducted group interviews with young girls and boys.
    14. The “discerning users” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to the young people who ________.
    A. have great freedom B. enjoy special privileges
    C. show good judgment D. have an influence on others
    15. What is the author’s advice for young social media users?
    A. Making full use of their online time.
    B. Using social media in a smart way.
    C. Taking full responsibility for their health.
    D. Keeping informed of low-cost information.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested In engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early( at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
    Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces.

由第一段“In order to make a reservation, please fill in the pre-reservation form. This form is compulsory for all types of visits.(如需预约,请填写预约前表格。所有类型的参观都必须填写此表格。)” 可知在参观博物馆之前必须要填写一个提前预约表。故选A。
由第三段中的“The maximum number of students/children per group is 25 and masks must be worn from the age of 12.(每组最多可容纳25名学生/儿童,12岁起必须佩戴口罩。)”
    4. D 5. C 6. A 7. D
根据第一段“they’d come to accept the fact that they would never get to see their
根据第四段“after they discovered the sweet dog, they had him checked for a microchip. Thankfully, he did have one, and they were able to locate his family!(他们发现这只可爱的狗后,检查它的微芯片。幸运的是,Razzle确实有一个,因此他们能够找到Razzle的家人)”可知,Razzle能够找到家人,是因为它身上的芯片。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段“after they discovered the sweet dog, they had him checked for a microchip. Thankfully, he did have one, and they were able to locate his family!(他们发现这只可爱的狗后,检查它的微芯片。幸运的是,Razzle确实有一个,因此他们能够找到Razzle的家人)”可知,Sheriff’s office并没有盲目地帮助这条狗,而是首先查看有无身份信息的芯片,所以可以推测他们是谨慎的。故选A。
根据第一段“It had been 10 years since a family in the Ozarks lost their beloved dog named Razzle.(Ozarks的一个家庭失去他们心爱的狗Razzle已经10年了)”以及第二段“But then they received a phone call that was nothing short of a miracle — Razzle had been found!(但后来他们接到了一个电话,这简直是个奇迹——Razzle找到了)”可知文章讲述一只狗从失踪10年到回到原主人身边的事。故选D。
    8. C 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据文章第一段的最后一句“While people got fascinated with cleaning, baking, and keeping themselves entertained, curious dogs and cats sometimes ended up getting hurt by these new habits.”(人们在享受打扫卫生、烘焙、娱乐的同时,好奇的猫猫狗狗们有时会因为人们的这些新习惯而受到伤害。)
根据文章第二段中“The increase in these new pastimes saw a corresponding increase in the number of pandemic-related pet poisonings.”(随着这些新消遣方式的增加,与大流行相关的宠物中毒数量也相应增加。)和“Overall chocolate still remains our number one toxin (毒质), at least for dogs, but we were surprised to see how each of those listed increased relative to pre-pandemic times.”(总体而言,巧克力仍然是头号毒素,至少对狗狗来说是如此,但我们惊讶地发现,与疫情发生以前相比,名单内的每种毒素都增加了。)

    Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road face down and roller over. He lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus drove away quickly. The cars directly behind the bus braked to avoid the boy,but none stopped. I knew that if the boy was bleeding into his brain, he could die soon. I stopped my car. I lifted his unconscious body into my car with the help of some passers by, and then raced back to the hospital. Since I wasn't allowed into the operation room, I drove home.
    Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles
on their faces. The mother held my hands and started weeping. "Son, you are an angel," she repeated over and over again. After comforting her, I went over to the boy. He managed to smile and squeezed my hand. No words were spoken between us —none were needed. I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement, the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
