Instead, he takes his snowshoes and compass (指南针) and walks to a wide-open area of fresh snow, making huge designs in the snow by walking and leaving snowshoed footprints in different patterns. The idea to make a snow mural (壁画) came to him in 2004 after a day of skiing in Savoie, France. Mr. Beck noticed an inviting area of undisturbed snow and thought it would be fun to draw a star in it. Being a mapmaker and an expert at orienteering (定向越野赛), Mr. Beck was good with these skills to create in the snow.Once he got to his site, he started in the center of the design. He then “drew” the primary lines while holding his compass to make sure he kept walking straight. Next, he added smaller lines, keeping track of their length by counting his footsteps. Finally, he filled in, or “shade”, some of the areas between the lines with more footsteps. The result looked impressive, especially when he viewed it from above on a nearby chairlift. On average, a snow design takes Mr. Beck 10 hours to make. So far, Beck has created over 300 snow murals—the size of the biggest one is about 10 soccer fields. As Mr. Beck worked to build a collection of photos to publish in his book Snow Art, he posted some of his pictures on the Internet. His art started to gain more attention and companies began asking him to create snow artwork. Mr. Beck has been invited to make snow art all over the world, including Canada, the United States, Russia, and China. It doesn’t worry Mr. Beck that his work will disappear with the next snowfall. Once he has photographed a design, he’s ready to think about the next one. “I can make another drawing in the same place when the weather improves,” he says.4. Where did Beck’s idea to make a snow mural come from?A. His love for artworks. B. His skiing experience.C. His mapmaking skills. D. His painting collection.5. How does the compass help Beck in drawing in the snow?A. Stop him from getting lost. B. Find the right site to draw.C. Finish drawing more quickly. D. Create a better snow artwork.6. How does Beck feel about his artwork being ruined by fresh snow?A. Calm. B. Annoyed. C. Cheerful. D. Worried.7. What’s the best title of the text?A. Snow: Nature’s Most Beautiful ArtworkB. Snow Mural: A Cross Between Nature and ArtC. Simon Beck: An Artist Painting in the SnowD. Snow Art: A Photo Collection of Snow Artworks.CScientists have long said getting a good night’s sleep is important to your health. Now, an American team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be connected with cognitive decline. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. Their findings were published in the September issue of Brain. The study examined 100 adults who had been under medical observation for cognitive ability for 3 years. The average age of the study subjects was 65. Every year, they were asked to complete several tests for signs of cognitive decline—the higher the score, the less cognitive decline. They also wore special devices to measure their brain activity during sleep. The study found that eighty-eight of the group were identified as free of cognitive damage, eleven subjects as very little damaged, and one as a little damaged. And those whose cognitive scores declined slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per night. But the scores stayed the same for those in the middle of the range. Dr. Brendan Lucey, leading author of the research, said, “Our study suggests that there is a middle range for total sleep time for best cognitive ability. Shorter and longer sleep times were connected with worse cognitive result. ”Greg Elder, a sleep researcher at Northumbria University, expressed his ideas about the findings. He wrote in The Conversation, “This is low when we consider that older adults are advised to get between seven and eight hours of sleep every night.” He also noted that the research should have taken other information about the subjects studied, including their general health or economic conditions, into consideration. But Dr. Lucey agreed that each person’s sleep needs are unique. Babies, young children, and teens need even more sleep for their growth and development. And people over 65 should also get more sleep per night. “It suggests that sleep quality may be key, not simply total sleep,’’ Lucey added.8. Which side of the study does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?A. Its background. B. Its process. C. Its result. D. Its preparations.9. Which is the best for total sleep time according to the study?A. 4 hours. B. 6 hours. C. 7 hours. D. 9 hours.10. What can be inferred from Greg Elder’s words?A. The findings need to be perfected. B. Older adults need less sleep every night.C. The findings agree with common beliefs. D. The more you sleep, the better your health is.11. Which of the followings may Dr. Lucey agree with?A. One’s sleep styles cannot be changed. B. Sleep time matters more than sleep quality.C. The total sleep time increases with age. D. Sleep needs differ from person to person.DThanks to the hard work of companies like California-based Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), space tourism is well on its way to coming true. Now, the company is working to offer a chance for space visitors to “get out of the world” by checking into the world’s first true hotel in low Earth orbit (轨道).The 650-foot-wide Ferris-wheel-like Voyager Space Station (VSS) will be made up of two rings connected together. The inside circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests while the outside ring will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, and scientific research labs. The hotel powered by the sun will travel at high speeds to create artificial gravity (人造重力), providing tourists a comfortable stay. When completed, it will have rooms for up to 400 people. While the idea is attractive, making VSS a reality will take time and money. The team is now building a smaller prototype (雏形) ring. Once finished, OAC engineers will attempt to create artificial gravity. Transporting the VSS to space will cost thousands of millions of dollars. However, OAC believes that they will recoup the money by asking $5 million per person for each 3-day stay. Though the cost may seem too high, it is cheap compared to the 55 million it costs to stay on the ISS (International Space Station). Besides, guests at the Voyager Station will be living in the greatest conditions.“You’re going to have the top cooks making really good food’’ Orbital CEO John Blincow told the Washington Post. “There’ll be two shows every night as well.” Visitors will also be able to take part in the activities that are not possible on Earth such as spacewalks which allows visitors to admire views of Earth and space. If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to start work in 2026 and welcome the first visitors in 2027. “If you are eager to be among the first, you can pay an amount of money to save your place ahead of time,” added John Blincow.12. What do we know about the VSS?A. It will be powered by electricity.B. It will be made up of two squares.C. It can travel fast to escape Earth gravity.D. It can provide Earth-like living conditions.13. What does the underlined word “recoup” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Recover. B. Waste. C. Spend. D. Save.14. Why are John Blincow’s words mentioned in paragraph 4?A. To praise the hard work of OAC.B. To show the high-end service of the VSS.C. To stress the importance of exploring space.D. To present what life will be like in the future.15. What is the main idea of the text?A. It takes lots of time and money to travel to space.B. Traveling to space has long been the human’s dream.C. The world’s first space hotel hopes to welcome visitors.D. Space tourism has been warmly welcomed since its beginning.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。Do you like travelling? The thought of fear crossed my mind. The next day, after breakfast Mom and I walked over to check things out. The place was like a big parking lot with weeds coming out through cracks.
