Fahim was only 11 years old when he first met Alberto Cairo in 1993 in a hospital in Kabul, the Afghan capital.
At the time, Kabul was caught in a bloody civil war. After his left leg was blown off, Fahim went to the hospital to seek treatment. This is a hospital run by the International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC). There, he met Alberto Cairo, who arrived in Kabul in 1990.
Over the next three decades, Fahim has made countless trips to the hospital. During those visits, the compassionate(有同情心的)treatment from Cairo deeply moved him. “He is a friend of the Afghan people.” Fahim said of Cairo. When Fahim decided to study medicine, it was Cairo who kept encouraging him. Today Fahim works as a nurse and an anesthetist(麻醉师)in a hospital in Afghanistan.
Fahim is only one example of what Cairo leaves behind in Kabul. For Cairo the job as a doctor came by chance. “I was a teenager in Italy when I saw a man doing something that seemed so simple and so helpful: helping people to walk. That moment left a strong impression on me. I eventually left my training as a lawyer behind to choose medicine.”
In his early years in Afghanistan, Cairo was shocked by the great number of patients seeking treatment for wounds caused by the war. Each year, the rehabilitation(康复)centers treat more than 13,000 new patients-most of whom, like Fahim, require lifetime treatment.
At first, the ICRC's treatment center only focused on war sufferers, but Cairo expanded its treatment to include all people with disabilities in the country. He made two decisions that have left a lasting impact. One was to employ former patients to work in the treatment center. The second was to organize an athletic group for people with disabilities. “My final goal is to let each patient go back to society and live with dignity(自尊),” said Cairo while waiting to begin his daily round in the West Kabul rehabilitation center.
4. Why has Fahim made countless trips to the hospital in Kabul?
A. To express his appreciation to Cario. B. To carry out his work as a nurse.
C. To strengthen his friendship with Cairo. D. To receive his lifetime treatment.
5. Why did Cairo choose to be a doctor?
A. He followed his childhood dream. B. He valued the virtue of helpfulness.
C. He was removed from the law school. D. He was shocked by the war.
6. What is Cario's ultimate aim as a doctor?
A To build more rehabilitation centers. B. To give treatment to war sufferers.
C. To offer jobs to all with disabilities. D. To bring dignity to patients.
7. Which part of a newspaper is the text probably from?
A. Entertainment. B. People. C. Technology. D. Culture.

Mandy and Joe have been married for five years and they both love travelling to new countries. But while this shared hobby brings them together, it is also a source of contention. “I do all the planning and book,” says Mandy. “Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy it, but if Joe paid a bit more attention, he wouldn’t have turned up for a flight to Grenada packed for a winter city break. ‘Jumpers and boots?!’ I cried. ‘You’re supposed to have packed shorts and T-shirts—it’s 30℃ in the Caribbean!’ Then I realized he thought we were going to Granada, in Spain.”
How Joe and Mandy each approach their travel plans is just one example of the many ways in which men and women differ. Yet, is what goes on inside our minds and bodies really so different? Furthermore, are we born that way?
On this issue, scientists are divided. The majority of scientists believed that patterns of behaviour thought to be more male or female are learnt firstly from our parents, then from our peers(同龄人)and, ultimately, from the societies in which we live. As Simone de Beauvoir famously said, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”
On the other side of the fence sat those who believed that male and female brains are actually wired differently. In one study in which 34 monkeys were required to interact with different types of toys, the males showed a strong preference for toys with wheels rather than soft toys, whereas the females were noticeably drawn to soft toys. These preferences were clearly not the result of parental influence.
Whatever the truth behind the differences between men and women, we can safely conclude that although the social impact on how we think and behave is undeniable, there exists a biological contribution. The question that now needs answering is to what extent biology affects the choices we make and the way other people treat us.
8. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Disagreement. B. Satisfaction. C. Inspiration. D. Information.
9. What topic does the text focus on?
A. Whether men and women are different. B. Why minds and bodies are so different.
C. What causes the sex difference. D. How different males and females are.
10. What does the study about monkeys prove?
A. Monkeys have their own preferences. B. Parents indeed have strong impacts.
C. Men and women are born different. D. Females and males behave differently.
11. Which statement about sex differences docs the author probably agree with?
A. Biology contributes to the difference. B. Biology mostly affects our choices.
C. Social influence can be ignored. D. Peers have more impact than parents.
D
Tree planting used to be regarded as an effective means of controlling climate change, because they effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere. But it should be reconsidered because trees only hold onto carbon dioxide as long as they're alive. Once they die, trees decay (腐烂) and release that CO2 back.
Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever. Rising atmospheric CO2, mainly due to burning fossil (化石) fuels, is probably driving that rapid growth, said Roel Brienen, a forest ecologist of UK. High levels of this gas are increasing temperatures, which directly speeds tree growth in those areas, he added.
The faster trees grow, the faster they store carbon. However, it is known that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives than their slow-growing relatives.
In order to see whether the growth-lifespan trade-off (生长和寿命之间的权衡) is a universal phenomenon, Brienen and his colleagues analyzed over 210,000 individual tree ring records of 110 tree species from more than 70, 000 sites worldwide. "By measuring tree rings' widths, one can tell how fast trees grew, while counting rings provides information on tree ages and allows making inferences about trees' maximum lifespan," Brienen explained.
They found that, in almost all habitats and all sites, faster-growing tree species died younger than slow-growing species. Early on, it showed that "the forest could hold more carbon as the trees grew faster", Brienen reported. But after 20 years, these trees started dying and losing this extra carbon again. "We must understand that the only solution to bringing down CO2 levels is to stop releasing it into the atmosphere," said Brienen.
12. Why should we reconsider trees against climate change?
A. Because trees can remove CO2. B. Because dead trees release CO2.
C. Because trees can reduce CO2. D. Because trees can hold onto CO2.
13. Which is the direct reason for trees' faster growth than ever?
A. Rising temperatures. B. Larger storage of CO2.
C. Growing CO2 in the air. D. Wide use of fossil fuel.
14. How do Brienen and his colleagues tell how fast trees grew?
A. By measuring tree rings' widths. B. By counting tree rings' number.
C. By analyzing trees' length. D. By recording trees' lifespan.
15. What is the effective way to reduce CO2 levels according to Brienen?
A. Planting more trees. B. Making trees grow faster.
C. Banning CO2 release. D. Controlling climate change.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me “Dream is priceless”. However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $ 12.25 per hour. Compared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn't dare to tell my coach, I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.
