Naturally Pink Lakes
Lake Koyashskoye
The water of Lake Koyashskoye in Crimea ranges from pink to red depending on the season. The lake is filled with halobacteria — microorganisms that produce a pink-colored protein when absorbing energy from the sun. Some also put the color down to brine shrimp (盐水虾), which boom in the salty environment.
Lake Hillier
Lake Hillier is located on Middle Island off the southern coast of Western Australia. Most people believe the deep color comes from a combination of algae and salt-loving halobacteria. However, there’s a bit of mystery to Hillier. Other pink lakes change color depending on the season, the angle of the sun or air temperature. Hillier remains the same shade of pink for the whole year.
LagunaColorada
Though it may be described as a “pink” lake. Laguna Colorada in Bolivia is often characterized as “red” or “red-orange”. Salt-loving algae and bacteria help to create this color, but sediments (沉积物) from the nearby rocks also affect the water’s appearance. Like some of the other pink salt lakes, this one draws flamingos (火烈鸟).
Las Salinas de Torrevieja
The pink water of Las Salinas de Torrevieja in Spain is thought to be good for health and people claim improvement in their skin and lung conditions after a bath in it. The lake is not the only pink-colored thing in Torrevieja. During migration season, flamingos crowd the area.
1. Which lake’s color is affected by sea animals?
A. Lake Hillier’s. B. Lake Koyashskoye’s. C. LagunaColorada’s. D. Las Salinas de Torrevieja’s.
2. Where is the lake whose color remains the same all year round?
A. In Spain. B. In Bolivia. C. In Crimea. D. In Australia.
3. What is special about Las Salinas de Torrevieja?
A. Its water is red-orange. B. It is home to flamingos.
C. Its water has health benefits. D. It changes color with the season.

Throughout history, people have been traders. In the early 1800s, a group of trappers called “mountain men” would venture into mountains for days and weeks at a time. They’d return with animal furs that people could use for clothing. At an event called a “rendezvous”, the mountain men would trade the furs with people who lived nearby. When the rendezvous was over, the mountain men would go back into the wild to collect more furs.
At the annual Trappers’ Rendezvous, an event hosted in Kansas, hundreds of children gather for a weekend of exciting activities. One of the highlights; trading, of course. At most camps, trading is just a side activity. At the Trappers’ Rendezvous, it’s part of the learning process. “One of the craziest things I traded was five multi-tools for a lighter and a knife,” says 12-year-old Gabriel Rodgers.
The Trappers’ Rendezvous also features a series of stations where children can practice skills that could be applied to the old days of the mountain men or to a modern campout. They learned how to start fires without matches, and how to throw tomahawks (战斧) at wooden targets, “I had never thrown a tomahawk before,” says Jaden Bernard, 12. “You have to learn how to hold it and how hard to throw it. I had one bounce right off the target.”
Throughout the event, participants also learned about rea-life mountain men. Adults dressed in period clothing were available to tell old adventure stories. Take, for example, Hugh Glass, a mountain man who was attacked by a bear in 1823. His companions thought there was no way he’d survive his injuries, so they left him in the woods to die. But Glass didn’t die. Instead, he made his way to safety over the next six weeks, traveling 200 miles in spite of his serious injuries. “It takes you back in time to how they had to hunt, how they built their shelters and how things happened back then,” 14-year-old Chris Cooper says.
4. What did the mountain men do at the “rendezvous” event?
A. They collected animal furs. B. They bought clothes to wear.
C. They trapped animals for food. D. They exchanged furs for other things.
5. What does Jaden Bernard think of tomahawk-throwing?
A. Modern. B. Difficult. C. Boring. D. Comforting.
6. How did Chris Cooper learn about Hugh Glass?
A. By hunting a bear the way he did. B. By building a shelter similar to his.
C. By listening to a story happening to him. D. By wearing period clothing to act out his story.
7. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To explain the history of trading. B. To describe mountain men’s life.
C. To introduce a youth gathering event. D. To teach some survival skills in the wild.
C
Sugar cane (甘蔗) contains around 10% sugar. But that means it contains around 90% non-sugar — the material known as bagasse (甘蔗渣) which remains once the sugar-bearing juice has been squeezed out of the cane. World production of cane sugar was 185m tonnes in 2017. That results in a lot of bagasse.
At the moment, most of this is burned. Often, it fuels local generators, so it is not wasted. But Zhu Hongli, a mechanical engineer at Northeastern University in Boston thinks it can be put to better use. "With a bit of improvement bagasse makes an excellent replacement for the plastic used for disposable food containers such as coffee cups," says Dr. Zhu.
Dr. Zhu is not the first person to have this idea. But previous attempts tended not to survive contact with liquids. She thought she could overcome that by combining the bagasse pulp (浆状物) with another biodegradable (可生物降解的) material. She discovered that the main reason past efforts failed is that bagasse is composed of short fibres which are unable to give resilience (韧性) to the finished product. She therefore sought to insert a suitably long-fibred substance.
Bamboo seemed to fit the bill. It grows quickly, degrades readily and has appropriately long fibres. When the researchers mixed a small amount of bamboo pulp into bagasse, they found that the short and long fibres combined with each other closely.
To put their new material through its paces, Dr. Zhu and her colleagues fist poured hot oil onto it and found that their invention showed resistance to oil. They also found that when they made a cup out of the stuff and filled it with water heated almost to the boiling point, the cup remained good for more than two hours. Though this is not as long as a plastic cup would last it is long enough for all practical purposes. Moreover, the new material is twice as strong as the plastic used to make cups, and is definitely biodegradable. When Dr. Zhu buried a cup made out of it in the ground, half of it rotted away within two months.
8. What does paragraph l mainly talk about?
A. A big international market for cane sugar. B. A plant containing a high content of sugar.
C. The large amount of world bagasse production. D. The environmental impact of planting sugar cane.
9. What was wrong with previous bagasse products?
A. They broke easily when wet. B. They were non-biodegradable.
C. They consumed little bagasse. D. They had too much resilience.
10. What does the underlined part "fit the bill" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Avoid the attempts. B. Meet the requirements.
C. Fill the vacancy. D. Survive the environment.
11. What do we know about the cup invented by Dr Zhu's team?
A. It can satisfy basic usage needs. B. It is hardly as strong as plastic cups.
C. It can disappear in two months if buried. D. It is unlikely to be used as an oil container.
D
One size doesn’t fit all when choosing a school. But parents can be affected by league tables. There are some 2,500 independent schools in the UK and they vary wildly in fees, facilities, performances and purposes. So parents should park their enthusiasm for brand-name schools when fit is far more important.
“Too many parents are crazy about a school’s reputation and place in the league tables without bothering to see if it’s right for their child.” says Gavin Horgan, head of Millfield School in Somerset. “There are some brilliant schools which aren’t in the tables.” There’s a lot of nonsense spoken about rankings, agrees Jimmy Beale, a former head and founder of the consultancy The English Education. “Good schools perform brilliantly because they select brilliant pupils. Parents who go only on brand are doing their child harm.”
Whatever they say, it’s the academic success that parents invariably want. There’s nothing wrong with seeking out high achievers. But a sensitive mid-level student might feel a failure in a school with a strong emphasis on academic achievement. “Some children are inspired by a bright peer group,” says Horgan, “but others will feel anguished if they are bouncing around the bottom, especially if the bar is set high.”
So, what should parents look for? Look for the “value added”, says Beale — how schools raise the relative academic performance of pupils over the years. Shortlist half a dozen schools — visit at least four, he advises. Open days are useful, but you can also request an individual tour — seeing a school in its everyday mode is more revealing. And the best schools communicate well with parents. “There will be rocky moments, but if you get on with the staff, minor problems can be resolved,” says Beale. “If you don’t feel you could have a good relationship with the school, then walk away.” And then there’s the question of culture fit. “Speak to current students and ask, 'Do I want my son or daughter to be like these children?’” says Beale.
12. What does the author stress about choosing a school in paragraph 1?
A. Reputation tells a lot. B. Think twice before you act.
C. Experience is the best teacher. D. The right one is the best one.
13. What is Beale’s attitude to picking schools based on league tables?
A. Uncertain. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Favorable
14. What does the underlined word “anguished” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Unfair. B. Confused. C. Painful. D. Lonely.
15. What does Beale suggest parents do while picking schools?
A Look at a school’s daily routine. B. Talk to current students’ parents.
C. Visit each school at least four times. D. Consult the school staff on open days.

What is the best sport for your body type?
Just because someone has dreamt of playing football from childhood does not mean it is the best sport for him or her. Finding the sport your body is best suited to can make a big difference to how much you enjoy it and how good at it you are.
A person with an ectomorph body type is tall and slim with little fat or muscle. This person has narrow shoulders and hips, and thin arms and legs. Ectomorphs have difficulty putting on weight because of a fast metabolism (新陈代谢). ___16___ . What suits ectomorphs is endurance sports. Marathon running, swimming, and football are excellent choices for them. ___17___ , basketball may also be a great option.
Mesomorph body types are the typical image of an athlete. Their arms and legs are muscular and they have broad shoulders and narrow hips. Mesomorphs can put on or lose weight easily and build muscle quickly. ___18___ . Possibilities range from weightlifting and boxing to cycling for shorter distances.
A person who is an endomorph naturally carries more body fat. They are often short, with a high waist, and well developed upper arms and thighs. ___19___ , they can be very good at power sports because of their larger mass. This body type is not suited for agility (敏捷) and speed, but strength activities like wresting or powerlifting can be a great fit.
It is important to note that the three body types are extremes. No one is 100% ectomorph or completely endomorph. ___20___ . Another key point is that diet and environment also contribute to athletic ability and genetics plays a large part. And the most important thing is to choose a sport you enjoy.
A. Everyone is a bit of a mix
B. If you want to be a world champion
C. If a person with this body type is very tall
D. A person with this body type has more choice of sports
E. For the same reason, it takes them longer to build muscle
F. While it may seem that an endomorph will not be very athletic
G. Endomorphs must work a little harder to maintain a perfect body weight

Many years ago, as a college student, I had a part-time job at an ice cream shop. When a woman was nearby the shop, I noticed that she had a box of what appeared to be purple tomatoes. It was then that my family was so poor that I could not afford to buy those tomatoes. I just looked at them as if they had come my stomach. As a matter of fact, I had never eaten anything on the whole day. That was when I felt the itch coming on. As I handed her an ice cream, I said, “Those tomatoes look delicious! What kind are they?”
She started at me and grinned so big that I thought she was about to start laughing, but instead she replied, “Here, have some!” Within seconds I had a handful of purple tomatoes. “Oh, no, you don’t need to give me any!” I said. Those tomatoes looked expensive. “Here, have more,” she insisted, and now I had six of the richest, prettiest tomatoes I had ever seen. I weakly tried to protest: “Really, you didn’t have to give me any, but I appreciate you.”
The woman smiled again and said, “I hope you enjoy them for free. And to answer your question, it’s a unique kind of tomatoes that my Mom used to plant. So they aren’t like the ones you get in the grocery store.”
I took those tomatoes gratefully and said thank you, and she sped off. She was like an adult version of the tooth fairy: I sold her ice cream and she gave me tomatoes.
About two weeks later, my boss at the ice cream store sent me a text message, “I wanted to let you know that your gardener dropped off a box of vegetables for you.” Baffled, I replied, “My gardener?”
That night, my boss showed me the box. It was full of tomatoes, cucumbers and green beans. The tomato fairy was back! I was both happy and confused.
