Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives .In 2017, he won the Turing Award( 图灵奖)for inventing the World Wide Web.
Tim was born in London, England in 1955.When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. And then he made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.
Tim started working on early computers after he finished college. He worked in England and then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it“talk”to other computers?
There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use.In 1989,Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web(WWW)all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.
Tim Berners-Lee doesn't think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.

Have you heard of the Andler Hillclimb? It is a yearly dirt bike competition that has dirt bikers from around Europe. All the dirt bikers try to reach the top of a dangerous hillside course in Belgium. It's been held every year for the last twenty years, but so far, no one has been able to reach the top.
The so-called“impossible climb”starts out as rough gravel(碎石)and then switches over to a rough uneven cliff(悬崖)face designed to throw riders off and roll them and their bikes back down to the base of the hill . The angle of the course(赛道) is not the problem, according to most riders, but the sudden change of ride surface makes keeping control of the bike and reaching the top so hard. Some fly off their bike early during the climb. While others get painfully close to the finish line, yet in the end they all succumb to the power of gravity(重力) before reaching their goal.
In spite of gathering the most talented dirt bikers in Europe at the start line every year, the Andler Hillclimb has so far remained unclimbable. The closest one to success was a Suzuki bike rider who once reportedly crossed the finish line with the front wheel before rolling back
down the slope(斜坡) like the rest of the competitors .Sadly, his achievement didn't count as a successful climb, as the whole bike and its rider must make it to the top of the hill.
With so many riders having failed to make it to the top over the last 20 years, why are people still trying every year? Why not just call the climb impossible and stop it? Well, maybe it has something to do with the satisfaction of winning? Can you imagine what it would be like when the very first dirt biker reaches the top of this famous hill?
52. What makes it difficult for bikers to reach the top of the Andler Hillclimb?
A. The bikers'poor riding skills.
B. The steep angle of the slope.
C. The rough gravel road surface.
D. The sudden change in ride surface.
53.What do the underlined words“ succumb to” "in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. 屈 服 B. 削 减 C. 研 究 D. 对 抗
54. Why does the author mention the example in the third paragraph?
A. To argue about the strict rules of the competition.
B. To show regret over the Suzuki bike rider's failure.
C. To tell us how difficult it is to win the competition.
D. To explain why the competition is popular with bikers.
55.After reading the passage, we can infer that
A. Andler Hillclimb is the most dangerous European competition
B. the dirt bike competition will also be held next year in Belgium
C. no one has ever been able to reach the top of Andler Hillclimb
D. the winner of the bike competition will get much money as a prize

As we walk the“path(道路)of life”,we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own
thoughts, for quiet moments of reflection can lead to personal improvement. However, when we want to be alone, we must be careful that we do not always jump into our own world.Social life is also important to all of us.
As we live in social groups, there are many benefits(益处) of friendship that we can enjoy.
Generally speaking, close friendships have three“fruits”:they may comfort the heart, advise the head and help us achieve the goals we set for ourselves. Through friendship,we can
become happier, wiser and more satisfied humans.
The first fruit of friendship is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy,
sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage—happiness takes on a greater meaning and a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved! Naturally, this kind of openness results from a close friendship. We know that our friends will both respect our feelings and treasure these moments of closeness.
The second fruit of friendship is the better understanding and judgement that may be
achieved through conversations with well-meaning and wise friends. We often find it easier to recognize other people's weaknesses than our own.As a result, if we are guided only by our own feelings, our judgements(评判) might be one-sided .On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions that we all have to make. This helps make our thoughts clearer and brings us a more thorough(彻底的)understanding of our problems .
The third fruit of friendship is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways.
Sometimes a friend is even known as our“second self”There are so many things in life that can only be achieved with the help of friends. Friends may have many different ideas and
skills.
Finally, it should be pointed out that enjoying the company of a crowd is not the same as
being with friends. Friends should be carefully chosen and relationships carefully developed. In this way, we can better walk the“path of life”with the comfort, advice and help from our
trusted friends.
56. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the “fruit”of close friendships? A. comforting our hearts with peace B. achieving our goals with friends'help C. guiding our own feelings easily D. understanding our problems better
57.We can achieve better understanding by talking with wise friends because
A. it is more difficult to realize other people's weaknesses than ourselves
B. our judgements won't be one-sided if we are guided only by our feelings
C. our friends are able to offer better advice on our important decisions
D. it gives us a chance to completely understand our friends'problems
