Letters to the Editor
Nurses’ strike
Sir, I have worked in the public sector for more than 30 years and know that the idea that nurses will be “driven out” of the heath service by the 1 per cent pay offer is poppycock(胡说) (news, Mar 8). What attracts and keeps people working in these areas is public service and, as the Queen said in her message, a “selfless devotion to duty”.
Tim Kerin

Doorstep heroes
Sir, I can understand why so many people now like to have their milk delivered(“Pint-sized horses are back on doorstep”, Mar 8) but don’t know why it has to be at such antisocial hours. I have often been woken up by the loud noise of Milk & More delivering to one of my neighbours in the early hours, and one day last week it was even at 1:50 a.m., which made me sleepless the following hours.
Helen Hinde
Ruislip, Middx
Wine of the week
Sir, Jane MacQuitty excelled(突出) herself in her wine column this week (“Red wine for lightweights: the best 12% and under bottles”, Weekend, Mar 6). The eight bottles on offer were flavoured as follows: forest-fruited, meaty, mocha, beetrooty, tobacco leaf, lemony and samphire. The star flavours(调味) in a Reisling from Chile were fat and lime pickle(酸菜味). Of the eight bottles of wine only one was described as “grapey”.

To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don’t question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories (理论) and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!
Brilliant minds can intimidate up-and-coming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are not as good as the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current ideas instead of questioning them.
I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental weakness. I was certain that my parents, my teachers---adults in general---were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn’t question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind’s independence was first developed in the classroom.
Astem, 65-year-old elementary-school science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however, I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made of particles (粒子). As the others laughed at his statement. I started to question my beliefs.
Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn’t given the whole story. I went to the library, did some research and learned of the light-as-a-wave versus light-as-a-particle debate. I read about Einstein’s discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox(悖论) that puzzles the world’s greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave, it is both at once. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.
Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are good tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to re-examine when necessary.
Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years-maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.

I rang Daisy the next morning and invited her to come to tea.
“Don’t bring Tom,” I warned her.
It was raining on the day we had fixed to have tea. A man arrived at eleven o’clock to cut the grass in my garden (Gatsby’s lawn (草坪) was always perfect). A little later an enormous quantity of flowers was delivered.
At three o’clock the front door opened and Gatsby hurried in. He looked anxious.
“Have you got everything you need for tea?” he asked.
I took him into the kitchen and showed him the lemon cakes I had bought that morning
“Are they all right?”
“Of course! They are fine, Nick, my friend,” he said, but I could see he was disappointed.
We went into the living room where he sat down. From time to time he looked through the windows at the rain. Finally he got up and said he was going home.
“Nobody’s coming to tea. It’s too late! I can’t wait all day.”
“Don’t be silly. It’s only two minutes to four.”
He sat down unhappily and, at the same time, a car drove up to my house.
I went out into the garden. Daisy looked at me and smiled happily. I helped her out of the car.
“Are you in love with me?” she said softly in my ear. “If not, why did I have to come alone?”
“That’s a secret.”
We went in. To my surprise the living room was empty. Then there was a knock at the door. I opened it. Gatsby
was standing there in the rain. He disappeared quickly into the living room. I waited at the door. After a moment of silence, Daisy laughed and said in a clear, false voice,
“I]m very glad to see you again.”
I closed the door and joined them in the living room. Gatsby was standing and staring at Daisy. She was sitting frightened but composed(沉着的), on the edge of a chair.
“We’ve met before,” Gatsby said.
“Not for many years,” Daisy added quickly.
“Five years next November.” said Gatsby immediately without thinking.
I sat and talked to Daisy as we drank our tea and ate the lemon cakes. Gatsby was quiet but his anxious, unhappy eyes moved continuously from me to Daisy. I left them together after a while.
When I went back in, they were sitting on the couch, looking at each other. All their embarrassment had gone. Daisy’s face was covered with tears. But there was a change in Gatsby that really surprised me. He radiated a feeling of joy that filled the room.
“Hello, my friend,” he said.
“It’s stopped raining.”
“Has it?” he said. Then to Daisy: “It’s stopped raining.”
“I’m glad, Jay.” she answered, her voice showing her unexpected joy.
