When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again. After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night. We found him just in time.

This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, if he had made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.

Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp (沼泽), and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he is still likely to turn around many times, but he is seldom lost.

There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation. A rainstorm may catch him without a compass in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.

When this happens, the normal first reaction is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.

The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

    24. The writer suggested that if the man had not been found, ________ .

    A. he would have been shot by a gun B. he would have become confused

    C. he would have been attacked by wild animals D. he would have been in great danger

25 What is the most important when a person tries to find his way in the woods?

    A. Intelligence. B. Observation.

    C. Direction. D. Chance.

    26. According to the text, if a person gets lost in the forest, at the very beginning, ________.

    A. he will worry about being laughed at

    B. he will push himself to find his way out

    C. he will feel sorry that he didn’t prepare well enough

    D. he will feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friends

    27. The writer tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who ________.

    A. go into the woods by themselves

    B. keep their head when they are in trouble

    C. are frightened when they think they are lost

    D. don’t know how to signal for help properly

    C

The Himalayan Mountains are home to the highest peak in Mount Everest. Now the first complete study of this remote region shows that its glaciers(冰川)lost billions of tons of ice from 2000 to 2016.

This is the first comprehensive look at what's happened to glaciers in the Himalaya over a 40-year time, said lead author Joshua Masurer.

“Our study shows a strong signal of glacier ice loss linked to rising temperatures from climate change,” Maurer says. As much as quarter of the regions ice has been lost, he said, “Temperatures in the region have risen one degree, and one degree was indeed enough to produce such a great loss of glacier ice.”

The signal showing Himalayan ice loss linked to rising temperatures would not be so clear if it weren't for the U.S satellites that photographed the region. Declassified(解密的)photos from those satellites were turned into 3-D models to show what the glaciers' elevations(海拔高度)and sizes were in the 1970s, Maurer said. Those were then compared to more recent complex NASA satellite photos that show changing elevations of the ice over time.

The ice and snow in the region are the source for Asia's great rivers. The study did not include the huge neighbouring ranges of high mountains but other studies suggest that similar melting is under way there as well.

This melting means flooding and the creation of many glacial lakes. In May 2012, one such flood killed over 60 people in villages near Pokhara, Nepal; it also destroyed houses. Some 800 million people depend in part on rivers from Himalayan glaciers for irrigation, making electricity, and drinking water. The more rapid melting appears to increase the river water during warm seasons, but scientists say that will decrease within decades as the glaciers lose mass.

    28. Why did the glaciers in the Himalayan Mountains lose much ice?

    A. The climate change increased the temperature.

    B. Many people used the ice to make electricity.

    C. Many trees and much grass were destroyed.

    D. The flooding and many glacial lakes took much ice away.

    29. How did the scientists get the conclusion?

    A. By making an interview with local people.

    B. By studying the finding of other scientists.

    C. By comparing the data collected by U.S. satellites.

    D. By collecting information from the papers.

    30. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?

    A. The melting of ice is nothing serious.

    B. Many Asian regions face the problem of ice loss.

    C. Only the glaciers in Himalayan Mountains lose ice.

    D. Many great rivers run to the Himalayan Mountains.

    31. What is the purpose of giving the example in the last paragraph?

    A. To show the risky results of the ice loss.

    B. To show the risk of living near mountains.

    C. To ask people to take action to use glaciers.

    D. To predict the future of the Himalayan Mountains.

    D

It’s well-known that facial recognition is widely used in shopping, home security, and law enforcement and millions of us use it to open our smartphones. But privacy advocates are raising alarms about the growing use of facial recognition technology.

The American administration recently proposed a rule to use facial recognition to identify and photograph all people entering and leaving the United States, including American citizens. That idea was scrapped after big objections from lawmakers and activists, but the administration is moving ahead with more limited use of the technology in a number of airports and other ports of entry say it makes the public safer and so far, they’ve had very few complaints from travelers.

However, a growing number of, both in and out of the government, say any type of facial recognition is just like illegal surveillance (监视). They say it exchanges too much freedom for too little security. Many note that once the government has a database of Americans with their photographs, there’s no telling what it could be used for. Beyond the privacy concerns, security experts are also worried that a huge government database could be a major target for a data breach (数据泄露). Some say it could give hackers access to data from millions of Americans.

Mike Howell, a former consultant of the Department of Homeland Security, suggests a possible solution: simply erase the information after it used. “The big question for,” says Howell, “is how the government largely will protect the data. We want the data we collect to keep us safe from threats, not to, you know, make unsafe. “Finally, the administration may have the final say on the future of facial recognition, with more regulations being advised to keep it in check.”

32 What does the underlined word “scrapped” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Abandoned. B. Expressed.

    C. Considered. D. Updated.

    33. What attitude do the security experts have towards facial recognition ?

    A. Uncaring. B. Concerned.

    C. Flexible. D. Tolerant.

    34. What does Howell advise American administration to do ?

    A. Exchange much security for some freedom.

    B. Protect the privacy related to facial recognition.

    C. Introduce some laws to stop data breaches.

    D. Stop using facial recognition in shopping.

    35. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Facial recognition is actually a double-edged sword.

    B. The American administration is advised to use facial recognition.

    C. It is urgent for the government to stop using facial recognition.

    D. There are alarms about growing use of facial recognition.

But the reason why the phrases exist is still the same: to keep the wrong people out. ____37____ And when they can figure out a person’s password, they can access private information. This allows them to play practical jokes, such as posting that information online. ____38____

There are passwords to avoid if you want to be safe online. The most popularly used password is 123456. This is the first guess hackers will make. They will then try to use public information about a potential target. ____39____ Hackers type this information into computer programs that can guess the target’s passwords.

One of the best ways kids can keep their information secure is by thinking up strong passwords. So how can you invent a password that’s easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to guess? ____40____ For example, a lyric from your favorite song, or the title of a book or movie. It’s best if the phrase is relevant to your life because you’ll be less likely to forget it. Then take the first letter or first couple of letters from each word in that phrase, and begin switching those letters to symbols or numbers. Use both uppercase and lowercase (大写和小写) letters to make the password even trickier to crack (破解).

    A. You can think of a fun phrase.
