Learning Chinese is a challenging but good experience as it gives you the opportunity to communicate with more than a billion people.
Foreigners think Chinese is a mysterious and difficult language because it is very different from the Roman alphabet (罗马字母). In fact, Chinese is not much more difficult than learning any other language. One reason is that Chinese does not require memorizing the kind of complex tenses like European languages.
Although it is certainly not easy for foreigners, in my experience you can learn Chinese fast. You will certainly find differences between the language in textbooks and people's everyday speech. One example of this is the difference between language on the street and written Chinese. It produces new phrases and vocabulary. In real life nowadays, people often use short, less conversational phrases to communicate with each other. China has many provinces and their dialects are different.
After you learn and understand the Beijing dialect, you may find it is hard to understand Shanghai dialect. The language continues developing. So it is still not easy for learners, no matter how well they learn from textbooks.
I hope that one day more Chinese courses are able to connect with “real” spoken Chinese and the way in which Chinese people speak daily. It will help foreign learners to help bridge the gap between learners and native speakers.
19.According to the passage, which sentence may agree with the writer's idea?
A.Chinese is more difficult to learn than any other language
B.People often use long sentences in the real life nowadays.
C.The development of language is still going on.
D.Learning Chinese requires different kinds of tenses.
20.What does the underlined word “dialects”in the third paragraph mean?
A.Some special people in one area. B.Some special languages in one area.
C.Some special customs in one area. D.Some special provinces in one area.
21.According to Paragraph 5, what should you, do if you want to learn Chinese well?
A.Learn some dialects in Chinese daily life. B.Learn written Chinese in Chinese daily life.
C.Learn real spoken Chinese in Chinese daily lite. D.Learn some long and difficult phrases in Chinese daily life.
22.What can we infer from the text?
A.Learning Chinese is more difficult than European languages.
B.The Shanghai dialect is quite different from that in Beijing.
C.Chinese can be learnt well thorough textbooks.
D.The gap between the foreigners and the native speakers is missing.
C
We like to believe that before we make a decision, most of the time, we take time to consider all the facts-carefully. However, experts believe that only 5%of our decisions are based on a rational(理性的)thought process. So, what influences our decision-making process?
We often leave decision-making to our instincts(本能). Scientists have found out that if we had the choice, we like to avoid pain rather than get something. In tact, we're twice as happy when we try to avoid a bad situation than when we experience a good one. This is why when companies send ads, they use phrases like“How to avoid...”,“Don't miss out!”, etc.
There are also physical reasons that affect our decision-making. Psychologist John Bargh carried on an experiment where people were asked what they thought of a fictional person, while holding a cold or a hot cup of coffee. Those holding the hot cup believed the person to be warmer and more sociable than those holding the cold cup. So, when temperatures rise, the more likely we are to believe in strangers.
Stress is another thing which affects our decisions. Different situations are more or less stressful for different people. Researchers have found, though, that women are more conservative(保守的)about decisions when stressed, while men are to make riskier choices
It may come as a surprise but every day from the minute we get up,we have to make countless decisions, like what to wear, what coffee to have and so on. Each choice makes our brain a little bit more tired, and this affects our decision- making. That's why important people, like presidents wearing the same three suits all the time, want to limit the small choices and spend more brain power on the bigger ones.
23.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
24.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Every day we have to make lots of big decisions. B.People sometimes judge a person by what he wears.
C.What people wear influences their decision making. D.Making fewer decisions helps to save brain power.
25.What can we learn from the passage?
A.We make most of the decisions after our careful thinking B.People are likely to be happier to avoid something bad.
C.As the temperature is low,we are likely to believe others D.People usually have risky decisions under heavy pressure.
26.The purpose of the passage is to__________.
A.tell us what influences decision-making B.advise people to make rational decisions
C.warn people not to make risky decisions D.show disadvantages of rational decisions
D
A tiny water-purifying tablet(净水片)powered by the sun comes from scientists at the Stanford University's Institute for Materials and Energy Science(能源与环境材料研究院). It is about the size of half a postage stamp, and purifies water fast using visible light from the sun's rays. The invention could let hikers clean their water quickly alone.
Other devices also use the sun's rays to purify water, but only use UV light, which typically takes several hours to two days to work. The Stanford tablet, on the other hand, takes minutes, UV light only makes up 4 percent of the total solar energy, but visible light makes up 50 percent of solar energy.
Some 663 million people don't have ways to get water, according to the United Nations, and almost 1,000 children a day die from preventable water-related diseases.
The tablet brought some noticeable early results. In an experiment, it killed 99.999 percent of bacteria(细菌)after200 minutes. It can be physically changed to treat the necessary amount of water, and it's supposed to cost just a few dollars. The researchers now are testing the device in the real-world environment and hope it could be sold within the next three to five-years.
What's the catch? The tablet only works (so far)against bacteria. But the team plans to remove(消除)other pollutants in later tests.
“The easiest water we can treat(right now)is in outside activities, when you get water from the river and the water is not really cloudy or heavily polluted,” Chong Liu,a Stanford researcher, said. “You can pat the device into the water and it can kill the bacteria.”
27.What does the first paragraph tell us about the water-purifying tablet?
①What it looks like. ②How it works. ③What it can be used for ④What the price of it is.
A.①③④ B.①②④ C.①②③④ D.①②③
28.Compared with other devices using UV light, the new tablet__________.
A.is much cheaper. B.works better without waiting time.
C.can process more water D.can make water clean.
29.What is the researchers' attitude towards the future of the device?
A.They feel hopeful about it. B.They feel unhappy about it.
C.They doubt the device's working ability D.They aren't sure about it.
30.What's the best title for the passage?
A.Many people need clean drinking water. B.Different ways to purify water for hikers.
C.Problems of some water-purifying devices. D.A small tablet may make a big difference.
