Car makers around the world are making fewer cars because they can’t get enough computer parts. Several factories have been closed as a result.
When you imagine car parts, you might not think of computers. But, actually, computer chips (芯片) are important in modem cars. Nowadays a car may have as many as 150 chips. They are used to control many different parts of a car. These days, checking a car’s computer system might be the first step for a repairman to find out what’s wrong with the car.
But now car makers worldwide don’t have enough chips to produce all the cars as planned. As with many recent problems, the trouble has something to do with COVID-19. Last year, as places around the world went into lockdown, many car makers had to close their factories. Since they weren’t making cars, they canceled many of their orders with chip-making companies. So the chip makers started working with computer and smartphone companies and making chips mainly for them.
Now car makers are ready to start making lots of cars again, but there aren’t enough chips. So they are facing chip shortage. How bad is it? A study shows that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to make 500, 000 fewer cars. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory last December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. Other car factories are also influenced.
Though many car makers have begun looking for ways of dealing with the shortage, the problem is expected to continue for several months.

A. The importance of computer chips in cars.
B. The rapid development of computer chips.
C. The use of computer chips in different fields
( ) 72. The underlined word canceled has the closest meaning to “______”.
A. placed B. shared C. stopped
( ) 73. Why does the writer talk about the car makers in Paragraph 4?
A. To tell readers the results of the study.
B. To introduce these car factories to readers.
C. To show the influence of the chip shortage on them.
( ) 74. What can we infer from the passage?
A. It’s more difficult for a repairman to repair a car now.
B. Many chip-making companies closed because of COVID-19.
C. The writer isn’t hopeful that the chip shortage will be solved very soon.
( ) 75. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Technologies are used in modern cars.
B. Computer chip shortage hits car makers.
C. Computer chips play a key role nowadays.

Brand Names
OK, so imagine you’ve thought of a product to make and sell— a game, or an app, or some clothes for example. You know you can sell millions of them, but first of all, you must give the product a name a brand name. And that may not be as easy as you think.
The brand name is the thing that makes your product stand out from all the others. Businesses spend a lot of time thinking about brand names; when the name has been picked, it’s very difficult to change, so companies have to get it right first time.
So how do you choose a name? A brand name should be special, memorable and easy to understand. It should create some kind of emotional connection with people who buy the product— the target (目标) market. Some companies use the family name. When Henry Ford started making cars, he just called the company Ford. Some companies use wordplay. It’s a common technique for naming apps, for example WhatsApp (from the English expression What’s up?). But what do you have to be careful about? Well, you shouldn’t choose a name that may not work in certain countries or cultures. Many years ago, a car company produced a new car that they called Nova. They thought it suggested something nice and new, but in Spanish it can be read as no va (“it doesn’t go”). Not a good name for a car in Spain!
These days, the choice of brand name is quite important if your product is aimed at teenage market. A teacher in an American high school said: ‘Teenagers won’t buy something that’s almost the same or cheaper— simply because they feel they must wear something with the right logo.’
Companies know that the name isn’t everything— the product itself has to be good, of course— it is the most important part of the whole package.

Can we go and see it?” Mr. Jones was quite happy about it, so they went there and both of them enjoyed the film. They came out of the cinema at 11:00, then got into their car and began driving home. It was quite dark. Then Mrs. Jones said, “Look, Bill. A woman is running very fast along the road, and a man is running after her. Can you see them?” Mr. Jones said, “Yes, I can.” He drove the car slowly near the woman and said to her, “can we help you?” “No, thank you,” the woman said, but she did not stop running. “My husband and I always run home after the film, and the last one washes the dishes at home!”

London police are well known in the world. Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700 there was no policeman in London at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night, and they were not paid very much.
About 300 years ago, London started to get bigger. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were some thieves who stole money in the streets. So people had to stay in their homes as much as possible.
In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners” because they worked near Bow Street.
Fifty years later, there were 120 Bow Street Runners, but London bad become very big and needed more policemen. So, in 1829, the first London Police Force was started with 3,000 people. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses.
Today, London police are quite well paid and only a few policemen still ride horses.
Perhaps the London Police Force’s achievement is to meet changing conditions and provide excellent police service. The two main reasons for the Force’s development were the increase of population and the progress of science and technology.
