Captain Nemo took me to the dining room. We sat at a table in the middle of the room and ate a delicious lunch. He told me that all the food came from the sea. “I love the sea,” he said. “It gives me everything that I need. Even my clothes come from the sea. It is a place of perfect peace. There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land. “He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages. Then he showed me the art gallery. It had many paintings by famous artists. The nextroom was a museum with all kinds of treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum.
Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and very proud of the Nautilus(鹦鹉螺号). He told me that he had discovered a way to make electricity(电) using salt and mercury(水银). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps filled and emptied (排空)tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise.
After we got to the engine room, Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical(圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. “It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed(惊叫). “I love it as if it were my child,” he replied.
“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.” “It must have cost a fortune!(大笔的钱)” I exclaimed.
“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions!”

“Have you ever heard Louis say good morning and good night to us, as the others do?”
“Since you mention it, I never have,” said the husband. “Goodness! What are you getting at? Do you wish me to believe that I have a son who is dumb in any way? This would worry me. I want everything to go well in my family life. Fatherhood is hard. I do not want the added stress of having a dumb child.”
“Well” said the wife, “I’ve been watching Louis recently. I think the little guy can’t talk. I’ve never heard him make one sound. I think he came into the world lacking (缺失) a voice. If he had a voice, he’d use it, same as the others do.”
“Why, this is terrible!” said the husband. “This is painful. This is a very serious matter.” His wife looked at him. “It’s not too serious now,” she said. “But it will be serious two or three years from now when Louis falls in love, as he will surely do. A young male swan will be greatly handicapped in finding a mate if he can’t say the usual sweet words to the young female of his choice.”
The husband stood quietly, thinking about what his wife had just told him. He was a brave bird, and already he was beginning to work out a plan for his little son Louis.
“If it’s really true that Louis has no voice,” said the husband to himself, “then I shall provide him with a device (装置) of some kind, to enable him to make a lot of noise. There must be some way out of this difficulty. After all, my son is Trumpeter Swan; he should have a voice like a trumpet (小号). But first I will test him to make certain that what his mother says is true.”

Any parent can tell you that children have an ability to get into mischief(顽皮). But when they get into some supernatural(超自然的)trouble, they’ll need help to get things back to normal. Author Hélène Schweiger tells a story of finding magic in her book The Magic Pond.
The story begins with twins Danielka and Jirik, who sneak out(偷偷溜出)one night to look at the full moon. When they reach a pond, Jirik looks at the reflection of the moon on the water. All of a sudden, Jirik is turned into a frog!
Unsure of how to fix this, the twins turn to their mother, but she’s just as stumped (被难住的) as they are. Fortunately, an elf (精灵) is happy to help them, but they’ll have to work together to succeed.
The Magic Pond takes the reader on a mysterious journey. But even with the magical creatures(生物)that we meet throughout, it is the human family that carries the heart of the story. The twins argue and joke just like any pair of twins would. It’s clear that Danielka and Jirik share a close bond.
When it comes to imagination, the sky’s the limit(没有限制)to what kids can believe. Danielka and Jirik accept the magic they see without any doubt. Openness to new ideas help Jirik change back to his human form.
Hélène Schweiger reminds us that for all the trouble that children can get into, it’s a part of their development as they learn to understand the world around them. Dorothy and her friends were nervous to get out of the forest as soon as they could, so they hurried along the yellow brick road. It was not long before they came to a wider river.
“What can we do now?” Dorothy cried. “There isn’t a tree tall enough to fall across this river.”
“There’s no problem,” the Scarecrow said. “The Tin Woodman will build a raft (木筏).”
And this is what the Tin Woodman did. And while he was busy making the raft, Dorothy found some wild fruit and nuts, which she ate hungrily. Then, because it was taking the Tin Woodman a long time to finish the raft, Dorothy lay down and went to sleep.
The night passed without any problems, and the next morning the small raft was ready. Dorothy sat in the middle with Toto. The lion stood at one end and nearly made the boat sink (沉没) because he was so big and heavy. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman stood at the other end. They both had long poles (杆子) that they used to push the raft through the water.
At first all went well, but then the river became deep, but the poles couldn’t not touch the bottom. The Tin Woodman said, “If we cannot stay near the land and the yellow brick road, the Wicked Witch of the West will use her magic and hurt us.”

“And I won’t get a heart,” the Tin Woodman said.
“And I won’t get any courage,” the Lion said.
“And I’ll never get home to Kansas,” Dorothy said. “We must do something.”
The Scarecrow was able to push the raft to the river bank. Dorothy, Toto, the Lion and the Tin Woodman got off. Before the Scarecrow could get off, however, the boat moved away from the river bank and carried the Scarecrow down the river.
Dorothy said, “Perhaps we’ll meet the raft further down the river. The most important thing now is to get back to the yellow brick road and continue on our way to the City of Emeralds.”

If you look around, you may see girls wearing hanfu or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters(汉字)on the stets. A new trend(趋势)is coming in China—“Guochao”, or “China-chic”.
According to a recent report, searches connected with “Guochao” on Baidu have risen quite a lot since last year, and reviews have risen, too. China-chic is happening, but what is it?
The word “Guochao” has appeared along with the development of the idea of “Made in China”. “China has recently seen a surge(激增)in young people’s interest in Chinese brands(品牌)and products that include Chinese traditional style and culture, a trend known as Guochao,” China Daily explained the word “Guochao”.
China-chic got people’s attention in 2018. Before that, famous foreign companies ruled the world market. Many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of these Western brands. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection(以道教为灵感的悟道系列服饰). The collection not only had a popular look, but also included traditional Chinese culture such as Chinese characters. It caught many people’s eyes at home and abroad at once. After that, Baidu Index showed that Li Ning’s popularity rose sharply. Since then, Li Ning has begun to meet the taste of young people.

There must be some way out of this difficulty. After all, my son is Trumpeter Swan; he should have a voice like a trumpet (小号).
“And then we won’t meet the Wizard, and I won’t get any wisdom,” the Scarecrow said.
The Lion and the Tin Woodman agreed, and they set off along the river bank. It was not long before they saw the Scarecrow. He was holding onto the pole in the middle of the river. There was no sign of the raft.

One of the first rock and roll songs was Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock.” One of the first very famous rock and roll singers was Elvis Presley. Others were Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. In China, the 24 solar terms were created thousands of years ago to guide agricultural production.
Rain Water stands for the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, lively spring—like scenery starts: the river water melt, wild geese fly from south to north, and trees and grass turn green again.
Here are four things you may not know about Rain Water.
Rain in spring is as precious as oil.
According to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil. In northern China the spring drought is common and the rain of this season is only 10 to 15 percent of yearly average(平均) rainfall.

Extra care is needed to deal with a returning cold time in the late spring that often happens during Rain Water. The fast increase in air humidity(湿度) can result in lower temperature and wet weather.

One of the main customs during Rain Water is sons-in-law visiting their in-laws and giving gifts. According to the tradition, gifts are usually two cane chairs with four meters of red belt which represents good health and long life. Another typical gift is a pot of cooked dish that contains pig’s knuckles(蹄) with soya and kelp. The son-in-law expresses his respect and thankfulness this way.
Nutritious porridge
