SHARK CONSERVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA
Take a two-week trip that you will never forget as a volunteer with sharks on a beautiful stretch of South Africa’s coastline. Head out to sea to witness one of the world’s most powerful (and most misunderstood) creatures on this inspiring project, enjoying watching them from both above and below water.
The DAY-BY-DAY schedule
Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday. You will be collected from the airport and spend your first night in a guest house in the city centre.
Day 2: You will be collected bright and early from the guest house and taken down to the project. The drive takes about 90 minutes. You will receive a welcome and head out to sea to witness your first sharks!
Day 3: Most days you will be out on the boat with the sharks, depending on weather. Help out with the full range of tasks on the boats, and in conservation initiatives on land too.
Last day: On the final day of your project you will be taken back to Cape Town for your onward travel.
The price is £ 829, including the voluntary work programme with accommodations, airport transfers, one night in a guest house in Cape Town, breakfasts daily and lunches when on the boats. Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week.
It is an amazing experience! Some volunteers planned to stay for 4 weeks, extended to 6 weeks and still didn’t want to come home. If you’d like to chat about this holiday or need help, we’re very happy to help.

Wondering what bacteria are? First, to help to understand a bit about our bodies, think of a brick house. All the bricks stick together to form the walls. Similarly, our body is built of building blocks. Instead of bricks, however, our bodies are built out of cells. These cells are extremely small.
Bacteria are very small, single-celled organisms. Our body is made out of trillions (万亿)of cells, while a bacterium has only one cell. Bacteria are similar to the cells that make up our body. They are very small microorganisms, often much smaller than our cells. Bacteria are found almost everywhere on Earth. Right now, bacteria are probably living on your skin and in your body.
Many bacteria are helpful. They can help your body break down and digest food. Some bacteria, however, like Salmonella, are harmful and can make people very sick. Many bacteria get food from their environment. Also, bacteria have a DNA blueprint, and can reproduce.
We know of at least 300 species of bacteria, and scientists often discover new species. Some bacteria are good for us. Many bacteria are harmless. Some bacteria are dangerous, and along with other bad microbes (微生物), they are called “germs”.
Bacteria are small, usually microscopic organisms. This means you typically can’t see bacteria without a microscope or another tool. Bacteria are living organisms. However, some bacteria can use photosynthesis (光合作用), like plants, to create energy. This means they use sunlight and other things to create energy.
Bacteria are found pretty much everywhere on Earth. Right now, bacteria are likely present on your skin. They may also be present on the computer screen, on your food, and in many other places. Many bacteria live in your digestive tract and help your body break down food.
24.Why does the author mention the brick house?
A.To show the importance of cells.
B.To give an explanation for cells.
C.To help understand bacteria.
D.To prove bacteria are necessary for our body.
25.What can we know about the feature of bacteria?
A.Bacteria can be only seen with the help of a microscope.
B.Bacteria are found only in human’s body.
C.Bacteria are similar to the cells in size.
D.Bacteria are single-celled organisms.
26.What can we know about bacteria?
A.Some bacteria can generate energy.
B.Most bacteria are dangerous.
C.Bacteria are a little bit bigger than cells.
D.We know of less than 30, 000 species of bacteria.
27.What is the best title of the text?
A.The introduction of germ
B.The introduction of bacteria
C.The discovery of new bacteria
D.The distinction of god and bad bacteria

Many people feel that dream is unique to humans. However, many dog owners will likely disagree on that. They have noticed that their dogs at various times during the sleep may shake legs, snort (哼) and sometimes growl (低声吼叫) which gives the impression that they are dreaming. These things may wonder us about whether dogs dream.
Scientists confirm that dogs probably do dream. It turns out that dog brains and human brains have many similarities during sleep cycles. Researchers used special machines to measure electrical activity in a dog’s brain and human’s brain. Scientists already knew that when humans dream, a certain part of the brain is active during sleep. Researchers discovered that the same part of the brain is active in sleeping dogs. Scientists have other data that back up these findings.
Many people dream that they are trying to move but cannot. Interestingly, part of that experience is not a dream. When people sleep, the brain produces a chemical that causes the dreamer to become temporarily paralyzed (使麻痹). Researchers think this happens so that people cannot physically act out dreams while they are sleeping. Dog brains make the same chemical. In one study during which this chemical was blocked, sleeping test dogs performed physical activities, such as standing up, sniffing around the room for imaginary rabbits, or chasing imaginary balls.
Because of these similarities, researchers believe that the content of a dog’s dream might come from the same source as a human’s dream. “People’s dreams are usually based on things they did that day,” says Dr. Samantha Hudspith. “So there is reason to believe that dogs dream about the things they’ve done that day. Of course, there will never be a way to prove this. Dogs cannot describe their dreams the way that humans can.”
28. What does the underlined phrase “back up” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Disagree. B. Support.
C. Record. D. Show.
29. What happened to a sleeping dog when this chemical mentioned in paragraph 3 was cut off?
A. It woke up. B. It stopped dreaming.
C. It acted out its dream. D. It couldn't move its body.
30. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By telling stories B. By giving examples.
C. By comparing details D. By listing differences.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Do Dogs Dream? B. Why Do Dogs Dream?
C. Signs of Dog Dreams D. Similarities Between Humans and Dogs
D
Mountaineers have noted that as they climb, for example, up to the 12,633 foot Humphreys Peak in Arizona, plant life changes greatly. In the Sonoran Desert, one climbs into a pine forest at 7,000 feet and a treeless tundra (冻土带) on the top of the mountain. It may seem that plants at a given altitude are associated in what can be called “communities” — groupings of species. The idea is that over time, plants that require particular climate and soil conditions come to live in the same places, and are frequently to be found together. Scientists study the history of plant life and build up a picture of how groups of plants have responded to climate changes and how ecosystems develop. But are these associations, which are real in the present, permanent?
A great natural experiment took place on this planet between 25000 and 10,000 years ago, when small changes in the earth’s orbit caused great sheets of ice to spread from poles. These glaciers (冰川) covered much of North America and Europe to depths of up to two miles, and then, as the climate warmed, they retreated. During this retreat, they left behind newly uncovered land for living things to occupy, and as those living things moved in they laid down a record we can read now. As the ice retreated and plants started to grow near a lake, they release pollen (花粉). Some would fall into the lake, sink to the bottom and mix with the sand. By drilling into the lake bottom it is possible to read the record of the plant life around the lake. The fossil record seems clear; there is little or no evidence that entire groups of plants moved north together. Things that lived together in the past don’t live together now, and things that live together now didn’t live together in the past. Each individual living things moved at its own pace. The fossil record seems to be telling us that we should be thinking about preserving species by giving them room to move about — to respond to environmental changes.
32. According to the passage, the movement of individual species of plants ________.
A. occurs in groups
B. often depends upon the formation of lakes
C. does not occur in groups
D. depends upon climate and soil conditions
33. All of the following are true EXCEPT ________.
A. The ice age occurred when there were small changes in the orbit of the earth
B. fossil records seem to indicate that plants will be preserved if they have enough room to move
C. fossil records clearly show that entire groups of plants are unlikely to have moved together
D. in the ice age glaciers covered the world to depths of up to two miles
34. The underlined word “which” refers to ________.
A. the responses of plants to climate changes
B. the current theories of ecosystems
C. the development of ecosystems
D. plant life changes
35. The second paragraph is intended to ________.
A. support the main idea of the first paragraph
B. answer the question raised in first paragraph
C. make suggestions about responding to environmental changes
D. stress the importance of preserving species
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Trying to find the perfect present is about as easy as trying to read someone’s mind. ____36____ So what to do? Here are some tips that could help.
Start early
____37____ While you are definitely not alone in this ritual(习惯), it is something you might want to try to change. Starting your shopping early can have a number of advantages, particularly when stocking up for holidays such as Christmas. If you plan in advance rather than last minute you can go shopping online which increases your gift buying possibilities as you’ll have time to factor in the delivery of the gift.
Make a list, check it twice
Now is the time to put your thinking cap on as you make a list. If you are lucky, you should be able to find a few good ideas in one of these lists. However, what if this list isn’t as helpful as you might have hoped? In this instance, write down different personality traits of the person you are shopping for. ____38____
____39____
If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. Often, the reason you get stuck for gift ideas is because you are restricting yourself too much. An example of being creative is to think about what your friend’s office looks like. This can give you lots of ideas to give him a gift for his workspace. In the end, it’s about finding something he can use every day.
Gift an experience
If a regular old present isn’t doing the trick, it may be time to think a little bigger. Instead of a physical gift, you can give someone an experience that they will never forget. You may be wondering what an “experience” means exactly. ____40____ If they are an adventurer, a local or foreign trip will be excellent. On the other hand, if they are a sports enthusiast, you can buy them tickets to a significant game.
A.Think before you leap.
B.Think outside the box.
C.Well, it can be anything that will interest the receiver.
D.You may find something your friend can really appreciate.
E.Do you wait until the last minute to start looking for presents?
F.Few people will actually tell you what they want for a special occasion.
G.Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that is perfectly suited to them.

The phone call never comes. The child might say the following: "What ____58____(be) wrong with him? He didn't even call me on Christmas day." 参考范文
Dear Jim,
I’m delighted that you will come to China as an exchange student next term. Knowing that you hope to adapt to the new life here as fast as possible, I would like to give you some advice.
Firstly, it’s necessary to pay full attention to what teachers say and take down the notes during the classes. Secondly, as a foreign student, you may find it a bit difficult to understand some notes or thinking patter about study, so that you are supposed to ask your teachers and classmates for help after class. What’s more, make friends with them, which will make you more easily get used to the life here. Finally, different kinds of clubs are offered to choose, such as music club, ping-pong club, AI club, you can join what you like best.
I hope my suggestion can work well with you and I am looking forward to see you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
