Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart I was sad because I couldn’t stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad, Merry Christmas!”was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got down stairs just to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife. I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.

    Paragraph 1:
I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily.

    Paragraph 2:
Suddenly my wife walked up to me.

    Paragraph l:
I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily. I was wondering whether I could get a gift when my younger son ran to me, who was really kind enough to save my face. He asked me to admire his gift which he deeply believed was carefully chosen by Santa Claus. He said happily that he would share some of the gifts of his and allow me to choose one from them. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.
    Paragraph 2:
Suddenly my wife walked up to me. It seemed that she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I think she was showing off her efforts on the decoration but she took off a small box and passed it to me smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a letter which read.“We will never forget you. Merry Christmas!”Under the letter was a watch which was clicking with delight.I was moved to tears.

“Where have you been?” Steve cried. Brady stopped directly in front of him and started pushing him back toward the slope they’d just climbed. When Steve still didn’t get it, Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and pulled harder. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered what his uncle had said about Brady saving his life, but that had been a long time ago.Was he still sharp enough to get them through this? Brady pulled again, urgently. “OK, big guy,” Steve decided.
Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Several times the big dog stopped to get his escape route. Often he changed direction. How long they’d walked Steve had no idea. He just held onto Brady’s leash with one hand and kept putting one foot in front of the other. He was almost numb when he heard the wonderful sound of rushing water. The river! With a yell the boys ran unsteadily forward until they jumped in cool, running water. “Brady, you did it!”
Many years earlier, my mother knew that she could not send me to college and pay for it. She worked in a retail store and made just enough to pay the bills and take care of the other children at home. If I wanted to go to college, it was up to me to find out how to get there.
I found that I qualified for some grants because of the size of our family, my mom’s income and my SAT scores. There was enough to cover school and books, but not enough for room and board. I accepted a job as part of a work-study program. While not attractive, it was one I could do. I washed dishes in the school cafeteria.
Just when I thought I was going to drop out of my college career, an angel appeared. Well, one of those that are on earth, without wings. “I heard that you need some help,” he said. “What do you mean?” I asked, trying to figure out which area of my life he meant. "Financially, to stay in school.” “Well, I make it okay. I just have trouble working all these hours and finding time to study.” “Well, I think I have a way to help you out.”
He went on to explain that his grandparents needed help on the weekends. All that was required of me was cooking meals and helping them get in and out of bed in the morning and evening. The job paid four hundred dollars a month, twice the money I was making washing dishes. Now I would have time to study. I went to meet his grandparents and accepted the job.
My first discovery was his grandmother’s great love of music. She spent hours playing her old, off-key piano. One day, she told me I didn’t have enough fun in my life and took it upon herself to teach me the art.Grandma was impressed with my ability and encouraged me to continue. Weekends in their house became more than just books and cooking, they were filled with the wonderful sounds of the out-of-tune piano and two very out-of-tune singers.

    Paragraph 1
When Christmas break came, Grandma got a chest cold, and I was afraid to leave her.

    Paragraph 2
The envelope was from grandma who had just passed away.

    Paragraph 1
When Christmas break came, Grandma got a chest cold, and I was afraid to leave her. I hadn’t been home since Labor Day, and my mother was anxious to see me. I agreed to come home, but for two weeks instead of four, so I could return to Grandma and Grandpa. I said my good-byes,arranged for their temporary care and return home. As I was loading my car to go back to school, the phone rang. “Grandma died last night, I’m sorry.” I hung up the phone feeling like my world had ended. I had lost my friend, and that was far worse than knowing I would have to return to washing dishes.I went back at the end of four weeks, asking to begin the work-study program again. The financial aid advisor looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I explained my position, then he smiled and slid me an envelope. “This is for you,” he said.
    Paragraph 2
The envelope was from grandma. She had known how sick she was. In the envelope was enough money to pay for the rest of my college year and a request that I take piano lessons in her memory. Moved to tears, I determined to learn piano lesions by heart and my memory of grandma motivated me to practice day and night. I don’t think the piano piece was even played with more feeling than it was my second year in college. Now, years later, when I walk by a piano, I smile and think of Grandma. She is playing the piano smilingly in heaven, I am sure.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me…” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

    Paragraph 1
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath.

    Paragraph 2
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back.

    Paragraph 1
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house.“Where could my mother be?”she wondered,“Was she still angry with me?”Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother.Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
    Paragraph 2
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother.“Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.

“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Contact…”
I rarely read the classified advertisements, so why did I notice that one? I laid the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years before, during the Great Depression when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin.
When my older twin sisters began showing an interest in music, Harriet Anne learned to play Grandma’s piano, while Suzanne turned to Daddy’s violin. Simple tunes became lovely melodies. My baby brother danced; Daddy hummed and Mother whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew long enough, I tried to play Suzanne’s violin. Oh, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
One evening as the twins played in the school orchestra. I closed my eyes tight to capture the picture firmly in my mind. Someday, I’ll sit up there, I vowed silently.
It was not a good year. At harvest the crops didn’t bring as much as we had hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?”
    “Can’t you use Suzanne’s?”
“I’d like to be in the orchestra too, and we can’t both use the same violin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him remind God in our family prayers, “… and Lord, Mary Lou wants her own violin.”
One evening we all sat round the table. The twins and I studied. Mother sewed and Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, George Finkle, in Columbus, Ohio.Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he asked me,“Mary Lou, do you want to go with me to visit Mr Finkle?”
He drove us to Columbus and we came to a fine, old house. A tall man opened the door. He and Daddy heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
“Mary Lou, I’ve been hearing things about you. Your Daddy has arranged a surprise for you!” He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play. The melody surged and spoke like waterfalls.Oh, to play like him, I thought.
Finishing the piece, he turned to Daddy. “I found it in a pawnshop(当铺)for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary Lou should be able to make a beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.

    Paragraph 1
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine!

    Paragraph 2
I forced my thoughts to the present and read again the advertisement.

    Paragraph 1
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine! “It’s beautiful.” I said, barely breathing. I knew Daddy’s prayer, and been answered. Back home, I practiced daily, feeling no tiredness. When I was ready to join the school orchestra, I trembled with excitement. Daddy and Mother smiled proudly in the audience ar their little girl who held her cherished violin for the whole world to admire. The years seemed to tun more Swift the. I packed my violin in its case and stepped into the grown-up world. Nurse’s training, marriage, bring up four daughters filled my years. Yet none of my children cared about the violin.
    Paragraph 2
I forced my thoughts to the present and read again the advertisement. Laying the paper aside, I went to find my violin. And I dialed the number. Later that afternoon, an old car stopped in my driveway. A man in his thirties with a young girl knocked on the door. “I’ve been praying someone would answer my advertisement. My daughter wants a violin so badly. ” He said, “How much are you asking?” “Seven dollars,” I said. I handed the case to the girl. She opened the case and touched the violin lightly as it caught the glow of the late-afternoon sun. The she threw her arm round her smiling father.

I was lucky to have an interview with a famous international bank after graduation. I really appreciated this chance. So 1 spent a lot of time preparing very carefully I prepared for all the possible questions ahead. As a result, 1 got the job. While my classmates were still struggling to get a job, 1 had succeeded in getting one, which made me feel very proud of myself.
After one month of hard training, Today was my first day at work to show the results of the training. I got up as usual, but I decided to skip doing exercise as I did not want to take the risk of arriving at the office late on my first day. I went through my morning routine and spent a lot of time deciding what to wear. I definitely wanted to make a great impression right from the start. Finally, I settled on the white suit with a tie.
I waved to say goodbye to my mother and set off cheerfully towards the bus stop. But l Saw a bus leaving the stop just as I turned around the corner. Now I would have to wait for another 15 minutes, even though time was very precious. I stood there patiently. 15 minutes passed and then 30 minutes, and there was no sign of the bus. Now what could 1 do? I had to reach the office on time. I saw a motorcycle approaching, but as I tried to stop it, the driver sped on without even a glance. It was then that a car stopped near me and a man waved to me. He said, “Aren’t you working at the bank at Nariman Point? My office is in the same building. Can I give you a ride?”
I was uncertain at first but then forced myself to get in as I was going to be late. Gradually, I realized that we were not on the familiar route to my office. I asked the man to stop the car, but he did not listen to me and told me to shut up.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1.
I had no other option but to keep my mouth shut.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2.
He told me that he was my boss.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 1.
I had no other option but to keep my mouth shut. I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. I forgot all I had learned from the training about measures to deal with an emergency. But to my surprise, the man finally stopped the car in front of the bank building, after taking another shorter route. I didn’t expect that I would be able to reach the bank safely and punctually. I asked the man who he was.

    Paragraph 2.
He told me that he was my boss. All that had happened was just a test. Unfortunately, I didn’t pass it. He said that if I was intelligent enough to be selected and employed by an international bank, I should not have taken such a risk and trusted a stranger offering a ride. Although I had prepared for everything, I still lost the precious chance to work. From this experience, I realized that the thing that matters most is whether you can apply what you have learned to your job. Moreover, success is not only in the interview, but also in the details of life.

    ①学习:learn from/draw lessons from
    ②处理:deal with/cope with

Shanti wanted the wooden doll in Ramu’s toy shop and told her best friend, Jodi about it. Jodi wondered if she could afford it.
Shanti smiled. “I asked my mom if I could make jasmine garlands(花环) and sell them at my aunt’s stand in the market.” Jodi thought it was a good idea.
Early the next morming, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside Shanti’s house. Delicate white flowers surrounded them with fresh scent. They picked blossoms with their fingers and then sat under a mango tree, tying up the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already see herself hugging that beautiful doll.
“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll.” said Shanti.
Jodi shook her head. Her family was low on money that week. She had to use her money to pay for Kiran’s medicine. Kiran was Jodi’s little brother. Then Jodi picked up her garlands.“My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market.”
Shanti spent the afternoon selling garlands alone. By early evening, Shanti had sold all her flowers.
On the way home, Shanti saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. She was late because she had to watch Kiran while her mother was away.
“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.
Jodi shook her head. “He’s too sick to go out. He coughs and coughs.”
Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now.The market would be closing soon.
Shanti looked at the purse tightly held in her hand. It was supposed to be for the beautiful doll she’d been dreaming of for long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here. Keep this for the medicine.”
That night Shanti cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved up enough again?

Mom comforted Shanti with hugs, and then handed her a filled package wrapped in paper.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next week, while Shanti and Jodi gathered blossoms, Kiran came, too. The medicine had cured his cough, and he helped them sell out all the garlands. When parting, Jodi said, “Shanti, we have prepared something for you.” But Shanti was so anxious that she didn’t seem to have time to hear them out. She quickly ran to Ramu’s shop, only to find the dollhad been sold. Broken-hearted, she ran back home and told Mom everything, tears flowing down in flood.

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some information. Then I saw the date-1990, and the signature-Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter. The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, “Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him,” she said and tears began to well up in her eyes. “Mother is waiting for him to come back home.”
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet, and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, “Yes, that's mine! It must have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon.”
“I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet.” I said. The smile on his face suddenly disappeared. He asked, “You read that letter?” “Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read.” I replied. He suddenly became excited. “Beatrice? You know where she is? How is she? Please tell me,” he begged. “She's fine. She has been looking for you.” I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, “Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her.”
Henry and I took the elevator (电梯) down to Beatrice's room. I walked over to her. “Beatrice,” I said softly, pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. “Do you know the man?”

Some of my earliest memories involve silting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys would always occupy the same spot on the table every time. It was as if he could see invisible lines drawn specifically for these things, not a centimetre more or less.
Dad's comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five this ordinary task brought me such joy. I would excitedly tum the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return die comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad's business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to - just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I'd already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn't he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Today, I'm no longer a kid. Now 28, I ’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me continued.

Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I passed the clean comb back to Dad, I noticed the wrinkles next to his eyes.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said: “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb? It's been a while since I last cleaned.” It hit me then why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy. That routine meant that my dad was home early to spend the evening with Mum and I. It meant he would watch TV with us or play a few video games with me. It meant a happy and loving family.
When I passed the clean comb back to Dad, I noticed the wrinkles next to his eyes. They are more noticeable when he smiles, but his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully places his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still organizes his personal items in the same care fill way. I guess some things never change. And for that. I'm glad.

Most young kids are very self-centered most of the time. It’s like their brain meters are stuck on “selfish.” This certainly described me, until I met my dear grandmother.
My father had been born in Japan, and he had many old, old photographs of the palatial (宫殿般的) estate that had belonged to his family through many generations. He told me stories of gorgeous rooms full of golden furniture and silk wall papers. He also described magnificent gardens, full of the sweet scents of exotic flowers and the gentle thin stream of graceful fountains.
From all these, I figured my grandmother must be rich. I had never met her before she came from Japan, but at eight, I reasoned that if I were nice to her, she would take me back to Japan to live in luxury. It was a good plan, I thought, and I vowed to spend time with my grandmother so she would grow to love me and want me to accompany her upon her return.
We went to pick her up at the airport. “There she is!” my father called. I expected to see some royal kimono-clad (穿着和服的) creature like I’d seen in pictures. Instead, I saw a tiny woman with silver hair, wearing an ordinary blue suit. She did not look wealthy to me. Still, I vowed to be attentive, to make myself indispensable to her during her stay.
To get closer to her, I flattered her into telling me stories about old Japan. She enjoyed making needlecraft with delicate designs, and as she worked, she wove tales of Japanese legends and history as delicate and beautiful as the designs she created. I listened, fascinated. Her words were a mix of the two languages, so I didn’t completely understand everything at first. Interestingly, however, as her English improved, so did my understanding of Japanese.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
No one spoke of her going back, and I was like an ant on a hot griddle. But I was anxious to commence my life of Japanese luxury, so one evening I worked up my courage. “When you go back to Japan, grandma, will you take me?” I asked timidly. Though a bit surprised, she looked up from her embroidery, her eyes peeking lovingly at me. “No, I live here now. But why do you want to leave?” So I told her about those stories. She smiled, stroking my head, and explained. Her great grandfather did have much wealth, but the war destroyed everything. Now that grandfather had passed away, she wished to remain here with family.
My dreams of a luxurious life had been broken. At first so disappointed was I that I even locked myself in the room, crying for quite a while. Then suddenly the fact that grandma was staying with us swept my sadness away. I had tried to make her love me so that I could join her in Japan. I soon understood that I didn't need the wealth of Japan. My grandmother had given me far greater riches right here at home.

It's quite impressive to see Canada geese flying into the clouds. They live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal. They never forget their first home. No one knows this more than my family.
In 2000, when I was seven, my parents and I came back from a T-ball game one late spring afternoon. To our surprise, two adult geese and a baby goose were in our driveway (车库前的私 人车道).The adults were shocked by us and flew away, but their baby was too young to fly and couldn't follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid contact with the baby, hoping he could join his parents.
Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen. It was clear that the baby needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we brought him onto our back porch (门廊)and set up a wire fence to enclose and protect him.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning. And then another morning. And another. Each day, we tried eagerly to get the baby back to his parents, who kept coming to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. The baby goose had clearly decided we were his new family and we gave him a name - Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫)noise, nonstop.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed. Peeper slept on our back porch in typical goose fashion. Every day, my dad would clear his droppings with water and throw him up into the air, so he could fly a loop around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.
    Paragraph 1:
One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
It came as a shock 20 years later when an aging adult goose made his way back to my yard.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop. But this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. It was dark, and we were worried. We looked for him for days calling his name, but he didn’t come back. We hoped he went off on his natural way. Again, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, then years. I missed Peeper. I would call for him every time I saw a group of geese flying by in V-formation. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a happy memory for family.

    Paragraph 2:
It came as a shock 20 years later when an aging adult goose made his way back to my yard. At first, I thought it was just another goose. And yet, something about him seemed strangely familiar to me. The goose came back repeatedly. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door and sleeping in our back porch. Besides this goose responded to the name Peeper. Much to my surprise my old friend returned, 20 years later.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒)on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防):We washed our hands with soap , did not share food and had no significantly close contact.
A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms(症状)for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning. I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.
At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes' drive from my house. The result made my heart sank — I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn't equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine (隔离)myself.
Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed symptoms , I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

Though worried about the seriousness of the virus ,I knew I had to be brave.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We decided to call everyone we had been in contact with over the course of the past week. Megan insisted that we should let them know that I had tested positive. Hard as it was to inform people that we might have given them the coronavirus, it was the responsible thing to do. To our pleasant surprise, all of our friends showed their understanding and support upon hearing the news. To cheer us up, one of my wife's best friends even baked a cake with the letters "Stay strong" on it and delivered it to our front door.
Though worried about the seriousness of the virus. I knew I had to be brave. I made sure to get plenty of rest and did some exercise to stay as healthy as I could. I also managed to ease the worries of Megan and our kids during our quarantine by spending more time doing online video-chats with them. Within the following week, my fever started to fade and I could feel my head clearing. The next test showed a cheering result. It came back negative. Had it not been for the love and care from those around me, I wouldn't have made it.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn’t mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time’s meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”

Paragraph 1:When the porter heard the angry wife asking.

Paragraph 2:Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes,

    Paragraph 1:
When the porter heard the angry wife asking, he turned back. The porter replied, “Madam, please calm down. I’m not a thief. That poor old man was sick since last month. He couldn’t earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Therefore, he fell down and handed me $15, saying, ‘I have taken an advance for this delivery, and you deliver the goods to the couple’s home.’ Madam, he was poor and hungry, but he was an honest man. I was just on the way to completing the old man’s last delivery to your home.”

    Paragraph 2:
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes, and the wife felt so ashamed that she had no courage to look her husband in the eyes. Suddenly she rushed to the market. Half an hour later, the wife came back with some food in her hand. She passed the food on to the porter, and said sorry to the porter, saying that she shouldn’t suspect them, and took them as thieves. At last, the porter took the goods to their house, and the rich couple changed their attitude to the man like the porter.

如:calm down, taken an advance, Upon hearing, felt ashamed, changed their attitude等高级词汇;Therefore, he fell down and handed me $15, saying, ‘I have taken an advance for this delivery, and you deliver the goods to the couple’s home.’和She passed the food on to the porter, and said sorry to the porter, saying that she shouldn’t suspect them, and took them as thieves.运用了非谓语动词;the wife felt so ashamed that she had no courage to look her husband in the eyes.运用了so……that句型。

The most delicious memories seem to happen during the holidays. And like a squirrel preparing for winter, I put them away to enjoy slowly during the long winter months. Sometimes, I enjoy them for years.
Among them are sweetest recollections: my little girls at the church play and the moment they got their first angel wings; a pink dolly stroller(手推车) wheeled into the bedroom with a tiny voice declaring, ''Look what Santa Claus brought me! ''; or New Year's snowmen wearing bright scarves borrowed from a grandma's fragrant drawer.
But there is one memory that is a little bittersweet -- sort of like 80% dark chocolate, but still good for you.
This story brings to mind a colorful candy dish and a very little boy. The occasion was somewhere between Christmas and New Year's when a few candies in a dish remained behind, a bright spot in dull winter gray.
Wrapped in December's chill, my then 3-year old grandson, Justin, and I had dashed from the warmth of my parked car into the building where I planned to take care of a few work-related tasks.
A smiling secretary greeted us as we brushed the snowflakes and rubbed our hands to chase the cold. Then with my grandchild close to my side, I busied myself, finishing the items of business that had brought us there. But while his hand remained in mine, his eyes fell on the candy dish sitting nearby.
As we turned to leave, the thoughtful and very observant woman behind the desk asked the question all children wait to hear.
''Honey, '' the kindly woman said, peering over her glasses at Justin. ''Would you like a candy bar? '' she asked, her hand pushing the dish close for an easier reach.
The boy looked up questioningly, his eyes meeting mine, permission hanging in the air. A slight nod from me and then a hurried beeline to the candy dish followed. One candy bar was already in his hand.

Para 1: ''Justin! '' I said from the doorway.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Para 2: In the humor of the moment, I felt something hard to swallow.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

''Justin!'' I said from the doorway. By this time his pudgy hands had grabbed one -- and only one -- and he made his way back to me. My voice was somewhat serious as I realized manners had been forgotten. ''What do you say? '' Hearing this, the little boy turned on his heel, promptly returning to the candy dish. ''Get Grandma one, too! '' I laughed. The secretary laughed. And even little Justin innocently giggled at the fun we were having.
    “贾斯汀!”我从门口说。这时,他那胖乎乎的手抓住了一只,回到我身边。当我意识到举止有些严肃,因为我的声音被忘记了。“你说什么?‘’小男孩听到这话,转过身来,立刻回到糖果盘旁。”“奶奶也买一个!‘’我笑了。秘书笑了起来。就连小贾斯汀也天真地笑着。
In the humor of the moment, I felt something hard to swallow. There was a truth that lingered long after the strawberry candy taste had disappeared. What example had I set for this little one while often in my care? Was he learning more about ''getting'' and less about gratitude -- that heartfelt ''thank you''? In the years since, I've always loved to remember that moment. But one gift I hope we all leave with our children is the importance of a grateful heart. Really, what could be sweeter?

Hearing this, the little boy turned on his heel, promptly returning to the candy dish. There was a truth that lingered long after the strawberry candy taste had disappeared. What example had I set for this little one while often in my care?

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned "secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉).The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in "How terrible," I heard myself saying "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.

    Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间),tears streaming down her face.

    Paragraph 2:

    Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum! “Before I could say a word, Janet dashed out, leaving me dumb with deep regret. But soon I clenched my fingers and made up my mind to find Janet and say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.

    Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.

Five years after his two young sons got lost from the U.K. to Toronto, their father is really excited to have them back in Manchester,England. On Aug.14,the Star broke the news to Abdul Abubakar that his children had been found safe and well in Hamilton—5,600 km from their home. “Oh my God,” he said when first told. “Is that true? Where are my children? Oh my God. Oh my God. I’m absolutely shaking. I want to hug them. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. My children!” Since 2010 he’d had no idea where they were living on or if they were even alive.
After years in the dark, his kids were found. Abubakar was finally reunited with his sons in Toronto at the end of December. “I was very happy. It was a great moment. I can’t even describe my feeling on that day. It was like a dream.” he said. “Even now we are together in Manchester,I still feel this dream is not real.” A short time after they went missing, the Manchester police called. Abubakar to say they had been found by mistake.
The moment he received the Star’s call,Abubakar began preparing to fly to Canada and hug his sons, but the long separation and age of his sons meant it would not be a simple reunion. Abubakar was given limited time to talk to his sons, who remained in Children’s Aid care in Hamilton. He thanked Canadians for their support, especially Children’s Aid and the Missing Kids Society of Canada, who helped him through the legal formalities.
“Talking to the boys again did not even feel real. It was amazing,” he told the Star after his first phone call with the children. His joy was mixed with sadness, because at that time, only the older son had recognized his father. It broke his heart,he said,to learn they had been given new names and did not recognize their birth names. “I can’t speak. I’m feeling so sad now,” he said in September.

    Paragraph 1:
For the boys, the early experience is fading. They have been to the doctor and dentist, are scheduled to start school soon, and have joined a local swimming club. “The boys are happy in their new home,” their father said. “They play outside freely;no one is hiding them indoors anymore. They’re very excited to go out and play with other kids, and they go swimming in the local pool.”.
    Paragraph 2:
While he’s delighted to have them back,Abubakar is also still adjusting to the new situation. “They did not remember me at all...They are aware that their new names were fake, and they call each other their real name, and I call them on their real names. “Sometimes I forget myself and call them the names used in Toronto and they tell me,‘Dad,don’t call me that name, call us our real names.’” The happy father soon laughed for the mistake he made.

A Russian dog named Shavi was hit by a car and the driver left without offering help. She was saved by a woman named Nina who took her in,nursed her back to health, and then found her a home. But Shavi escaped from her new home and walked nearly 200 miles back to be with her guardian angel after two weeks.
Last winter,Shavi had been trying to survive as a street dog during the cold Russian winter when her life nearly ended. She was the victim of a hit & shy; and & shy; run, which resulted in two badly broken legs, among other injuries. She nearly froze to death, but two cyclists found her and brought her to a vet. They wanted to find Shavi a home to the public, and only one person responded—Nina.
The woman brought the injured dog back to her home, and nursed her back to health. She even taught Shavi how to walk again, and trained her to understand basic commands.
Shavi was a fighter, and on the first day after the surgery, wouldn’t even move herself on the blanket set out for her. Rather, she tried to make it outside, and was found lying on the door step. Nina looked after her and spent the next six months helping her recover. Some parts were easy; Shavi was a smart student, and easily learned commands. But she was terrified of strangers and cars, and it took a long time to get her accustomed to the outside world again.
Though she would have loved to have kept her, obstacles prevented Nina from doing so. Her apartment was too small, especially with three cats and two other rescue dogs, and her job and family commitments kept her from giving the new one as much attention as she needed.
As much as it pained her to do it,she searched for someone to take her in,but the only friends willing to do so lived 180 miles away. They lived out in the countryside, and Shavi would have more room to walk around. Nina believed the new owner was truly the best choice for her.

    ________________________________________________________________________
However, only days after arriving at her new home,Shavi went missing after she dug a hole under the fence. Worried, her new owners called Nina to tell her their sad news—Shavi was once again living by herself out on the streets. Almost two weeks later,Nina was walking down the road when she was surprised at something touching her leg. It was Shavi!Nina burst into tears, hardly able to believe that this dog walked so far just to find her.
What was most fascinating about the reunion is that Shavi also moves others. Nina’s family had moved to a bigger apartment. “I’ve heard amazing stories about dogs’ loyalty, but I never imagined this sort of thing would ever happen to me. Even now,I can hardly believe this dog traveled such a long distance to find us,” said Nina,“I would never give this kind of friend away again. I never grow tired of repeating this—animals are the most devoted and loving creatures. They need our love and care.”

A loyal dog has continued to show its loyalty, keeping watch on its owner’s grave six years after he passed away.
Capitan,a German shepherd, reportedly ran away from home after its owner,Miguel Guzman, died in 2006.A week later, the Guzman family found the dog sitting by his grave in central Argentina.
Miguel Guzman adopted Capitan in 2005 as a gift for his teenage son,Damian. And for the past six years,Capitan has continued to stand guard at Miguel’s grave. The family says the dog rarely leaves the site.
“We searched for him,but in vain,” Mrs. Guzman told a reporter. “We thought he must have got run over and died.”
“The following Sunday we went to the cemetery, and Damian recognized his pet. Capitan came up to us,barking as if he were crying.”
Adding to the unusual circumstances,Mrs. Guzman says the family never brought Capitan to the cemetery before he was discovered there.
“It is a mystery how he managed to find the place,” she said.
Cemetery director Hector Baccega says he and his staff have begun feeding and taking care of Capitan.
“He turned up here one day,all on his own,and started wandering all around the cemetery until he eventually found the tomb of his master,” Baccega said.
“During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day,at six o’clock sharp,he lies down on top of the grave, stays there all night.”
But the Guzman family hasn’t abandoned Capitan. Damian says the family has tried to bring Capitan home several times but that he always returns to the cemetery on his own.
“I think he’s going to be there until he dies, too. He’s looking after my dad,” he said.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon,we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have ever seen in my life.
I was making lunch for the family when I saw my 6yearold son,Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking with his usual way. He was obviously walking with great effort, trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however,he was once again walking in that unusual way toward the woods. This activity went on for an hour. Finally I couldn’t take it any longer. I walked out of the house and followed him.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he carried. I sneaked(偷偷地走) close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much higher purpose,I thought. As I came closer,I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them,at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck(雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck did not threaten him nor even move as Billy knelt down. And then I saw a tiny baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from thirst and heat, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water in my boy’s hands.

    Paragraph 1:
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house.

    Paragraph 2:
And now I knew what’s going on.

    Paragraph 1:
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a tap. Billy opened it with his small hand and a small trickle of water began to run out. He knelt there, letting the drip slowly fill up his “cup”.Then he ran quickly to the thirsty animals.
    Paragraph 2:
And now I knew what’s going on. The week before,he had made the same trouble with our horses, which caused him a lecture from his father about the importance of not wasting water. That should be the reason he didn’t ask me for help. It took much time for the drops to fill his hands. His eyes were filled with tears, saying “I’m not wasting”.Now,I let him attend the baby deer alone for it was his job while I just stood on the edge of the woods watching. All I can say is that the rain that came that day saved our farm, just like the actions of one little boy saved another.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice? (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence Lo the address she had given me.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
    "Nothing." I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

    Paragraph 1:
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Before the woman left , I said to her, “My mother treated everyone kindly, she is a great person, but she passed away years ago. you are like my mother,” the woman said, “ thank you. If you want to visit me, I’ll tell you my story.” Then the woman left. After a long pause, I drove the taxi to go home.

    Paragraph 2
The next day, I was on my way to visit her. The old woman told me that she used to be a millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we saw last night. But she neglected her family. her only son died one year ago because of cancer. She sold everything to save him, but failed. How sad! At last, the old woman said to me, “Life is short, but please be in no hurry. Though everyone has to earn money to make a living, always remember that family is the most important thing to you,” I said nothing but nodded hard.

“Friends are angels who leave miracles (奇迹) in your heart.”“Quilts sewn by friends are a true comfort.”...Quilting took a lot of time. But the messages on it felt meaningful.
When I started my current project,_I woke up every day with new ideas and fresh enthusiasm. I really believed the importance of what I wanted to create, and I had my husband, Claudio,_cheer me on. But then, things got hard. I injured my shoulder and my recovery was slow. In the middle of it, I lost Claudio to cancer. Then I was discouraged, lonely, and without Claudio's support. Facing down the halffinished quilt in my sewing room one morning soon after his death, I could hardly gather the energy to sew it.
The quilt was meant to be a way to keep my old nursing class together. We'd graduated from Mercy College of Ohio over 40 years before and quickly worked all over the country. I always tried to find ways to connect everyone together, but nothing ever seemed to work out. I knew I needed to find a connection to share at a distance. I thought about a quilt.
I got in touch with as many of my old classmates as I could. Everyone who wanted to join the project was sent a piece of fabric (织物). They could sign it or write a personal message. Once I got the pieces back, I'd sew them on the finished piece.
I rubbed my painful shoulder and ran my hand over the unfinished quilt. There was still so much to do. Our class's fortyfifth anniversary party was coming up, but my heart wasn't in this project anymore. With Claudio's encouragement I'd kept at it despite my painful shoulder. But Claudio was gone. Working on the quilt was impossible with my aches and pains. Why was I even trying? I covered up my sewing_machine and left the quilt as it was.

    Paragraph 2:
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 1:
Weeks passed but I didn't sew a thing. I thought of it one afternoon when I went into my sewing room to dust. Quilting pieces covered the table. They were filled with colorful messages from my old classmates. I picked one up:“Mercy sisters—friends forever!”The handwriting was messy, but the statement was true. I could almost imagine my old friends right beside me, whispering words of encouragement and love. Maybe I was not as alone as I thought. Suddenly my project no longer felt so frightening. No time to waste. I uncovered my sewing_machine and got to work.
    Paragraph 2:
I arrived at our fortyfifth anniversary party equipped with pictures of the finished quilt. The ladies cheered as the photos went from hand to hand. I couldn't wait for them to hold the real thing, for them to be covered in the comfort of old friends, just like I had been when I needed it most. No matter how much the distance was, whether it was from heaven or Earth across the country, Claudio and my friends would always be there for me in spirit.
