Lucas’ New Shoes
Lucas, a 4-year-old African penguin living at San Diego Zoo in the US, now has a pair of happy feet.
The penguin has bumblefoot, a foot disease in some animals that causes their feet to swell(肿胀) and ache. As a result, the other penguins didn’t want to hang out with him, leaving Lucas feeling left out.
The zookeepers decided to do something about it. They had Lucas walk across the sand, took impressions(印记) of his footprints and send them to an organization called Thera-Paw. It creates custom products for animals that have special needs.
Thera-Paw’s team created a special pair of shoes for Lucas. “It can help Lucas fully join the group and act more like a penguin. For example, he now can climb rocks, swim, and nest. And the color of the shoes looks very close to it’s natural feet color, so they don’t stand out too much,” said the team. The task was a success. Zookeepers put Lucas’s new shoes on him and he began trying them out as soon as possible.
Now he can move around and is able to keep up with—and, more importantly, play with other penguins. In fact, it’s going even better than expected—Lucas already has a girlfriend.
The San Diego Zoo is the largest zoo in California. And it turns out that Lucas isn’t the first animal there that has ever needed help in walking. Earlier this year, a three-month-old giraffe was finally able to walk and jump on its own with special leg braces(矫正器).

Many Chinese liked to travel abroad or across cities on vacation, but now camping has become more and more popular with them because of COVID-19.
A report by online travel website Tongcheng Travel showed that during the recent National Day holiday, camping-related searches rose a lot compared with that in September. Forests and islands were two most popular key words.
Li Nan, 31, from Zhejiang, went camping with her friends in the mountains during the holiday. “We liked to visit museums or travel to other cities. But now we just go camping and we find it’s relaxing,” Li told China Daily. She said camping is a good way to get closer to nature and enjoy sports and activities outside.
This growing popularity has also made the sale of camping-related tools greater, such as tents, tables and chairs, and sleeping bags. Trip, an online travel agency, said the number of visit for their camping tools on Oct. 1st rose by 90 percent compared with the week before.
However, the need for camping space is greater than that for the tools. “Everywhere is full of people and there is a tent every several meters,” a tourist from Beijing told Global times.
Besides, camping isn’t always good for the local environment. In a camping place in Beijing’s Mountain Shuangfeng, some of the land has become barren(荒芜的) because of too many visitors walking on it. Trash, like bamboo chopsticks and disposable plates(一次性餐盘), could be seen everywhere, reported Xinhua.
The government needs to provide more green space for tourists and call on people to protect the environment while camping, said some environmental researchers.
