C. Answer the questions.
Beauty: The Korean Way
“Thank goodness you have double eyelids(双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money,” said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost every Caucasian(白种人) has, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans(韩国) are b 1 with double eyelids.
I never quite u 2 how having double eyelids saved my parents money until that summer when I came back to Seoul. The moment I arrived in the city, I n 3 cosmetic surgery clinics(整容诊所)everywhere, along with billboards(街上大型广告牌) featuring South Korean women who had Western characteristics—tall, thin, with a milky complexion(肤色), long legs, nice big eyes, and the perfectly-angled nose. I figured out that South Korean beauty meant looking as “white” or Caucasian as possible.
South Korea is known to have the highest ratio(比例) of cosmetic surgeons to citizens worldwide. It is very
c 4 for girls to get eyelid surgery as high school graduation presents. What made South Koreans fall so madly in love with cosmetic surgery?
Cosmetic surgery has some kind of magical appeal(吸引力) to them—the promise of beauty. Women are often convinced(深信不疑)that suffering and sacrificing(牺牲)is n 5 and worthy in order to be beautiful. And this suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to a 6 a better-looking partner, which then leads to better-looking children and a better lifestyle.
This beauty ideal(期望)is not a trend(时尚), but a very real standard that is growing deeper within South Korean society. A 7 is starting to play a bigger role in the workplace to the extent that men are also resort to(求助于)cosmetic surgery. For instance, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and over six feet tall, gets many more job offers than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier, even though both of them graduated from the same college and had the same GPA(平均绩点)and certificates.
In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty(形体美)equals happiness.

Beauty
What kind of beauty is more important, external beauty or inner beauty? This issue has been heatedly discussed for several centuries. However, we still haven’t found the best answer yet, because there can’t exist two same leaves in the world and so do people’s views. If you ask me which one is more important, my answer is both.
Firstly, I’d like to ask you a question: if you can choose, would you choose born with a good-looking appearance or an ugly one? Absolutely, the answer is the former one and you may laugh at me, “Who will be so stupid to be ugly?” Obviously, as normal people, everyone is apt to pursue beauty. Does anybody dislike something beautiful? I’m so sorry to say that I’m not. I like everything beautiful, and of course, beautiful men that we called flower boys. Don’t you take another look at them when you see beautiful girls and handsome boys in the street? What’s more, studies show that people with good appearance are more likely to be successful in an interview. In our society, external beauty offers us many advantages such as making friends, getting a good job, and getting a promotion. With a good external beauty, we may be more confident. This is why nowadays cosmetic surgery becomes more and more popular. Though we may have heard that “Beauty is only skin deep”, there is no evidence that people with good external beauty definitely lack inner beauty. They also can posses many other noble virtues.
As for the inner beauty, nobody can deny its significance. It is right that everyone loves external beauty, but there are still many people in the world caring more about people’s inner beauty. External beauty, to some extent, is just a gift given by our parents, but it doesn’t mean that we can get something for nothing. As we all know, external beauty just accounts for a small fraction. Most of us are divided into the common people, in other words, we don’t have perfect external beauty. But we deserve to be admired for our excellent capabilities or some special virtues, right? External beauty does help us seize others’ eyes, but inner beauty can help us seize others’ heart. People like external beauty but they also pursue inner beauty. In our society, to measure a person, what we count most are still inner virtues and abilities. With time going by, people with inner beauty will be more popular. Above all, it is easier for us to do something better if we have inner virtues. The success of many famous people has proved it.
Thus, if you are born with good external beauty, then congratulations and please cherish it. You are closer to success than others, but don’t forget to develop your inner beauty because it can help you more. And if you are not lucky enough to be born with good external beauty, don’t be ashamed of yourself and try to develop your inner beauty. Please believe that one day you will succeed for your inner beauty.

When Simon Beck creates artwork, he doesn’t use paints or pencils. Instead, he takes his snowshoes and compass (指南针) and walks to a wide-open area of fresh snow. He makes huge designs in the snow by walking and leaving footprints in different styles.
The idea to make a snow mural (雪地巨画) came to him in 2004 after a day of skiing in Savoie, France. Mr. Beck noticed an inviting area of fresh snow and thought it would be fun to draw a star in it. The result looked fantastic, especially when he watched it from above.
Since then, he has continued to make snow artwork each winter. If the new snowfall covers his artwork, Mr. Beck tries again. It doesn’t worry him that his work will disappear. After he has photographed his artwork, he’s ready to think about the next one. “I can make another drawing in the same place when the weather improves,” he says.
Mr. Beck often starts by drawing the design on paper. When he gets to the place, he starts in the center of the design. He then “draws” the primary lines while holding his compass to make sure he keeps walking straight. Next, he adds smaller lines, keeping track of their length by counting his footsteps. Finally, he fills in or “shades (画阴影)” some of the areas between the lines with more footsteps.
So far Mr. Beck has built a collection of photos to publish in his book Snow Art. He has also posted some of his photos on social media. His art started to get more attention. 四、阅读回答问题
Blindness needs not prevent people from excelling.
A video clip of Xiong Linghao, an 18-year-old blind girl playing Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata in an international youth piano competition in Shanghai, went online.
Xiong Linghao, who started learning the piano at age 6, said her favorite star is Ludwig van Beethoven, who began to suffer from hearing problems in his 20s and later went completely deaf.
Their physical challenges led both of them to form a connection with the world through music, said the 18-year-old from Mianyang, Sichuan Province, who was born premature(早产) and lost her eyesight in early babyhood due to a medical accident.
Xiong's mother discovered her daughter had a talent for music early in her childhood. At age 3, she could play children's songs on a small electric piano at home.
“The piano is my best friend,” said Xiong. “The piano has accompanied me throughout my ups and downs in its own way. It brings so much pleasure into my life and empowers me with determination.” Learning to play the piano, which usually has 88 keys, is not easy for people who are blind. At first, her teacher helped her place her hands and fingers properly.
“Repeated practice is key because I need muscle memory to find the right keys,”she explained. “I pay attention to each minor step in each phrase and need to be fairly exact with the angle of how I control my hands, wrists and fingers.”
She has composed several songs, including one called the “Little Dog in Dream”, where she imagined her life with the company of a guide dog. Lyrics(歌词) like “blue skies and rainbow slides” were used by the girl, who said she could “see” the world through music. Xiong expects to go to a university in Beijing and major in music performance or music production. If she had vision for three days, Xiong said, she would see how she looks, cook a big meal for her parents and take a walk in the places she has been to hundreds of times. “I also would like to see with my eyes what the piano that has accompanied me for more than a decade looks like,” she said.
