It’s time to go back to school and hit the books. The long lazy summer days are over and now we have another school year. So how can we make this year a w    1     one? The answer to that lies in our friends.

Friends play a big role in our lives. We want to share our thoughts and feelings, experience new things and create memories, and friends can help us do that.

Friends are there to listen to you and to share your m    2     of joy and sadness. But most importantly friends are there to support(鼓励、支持) you. Throughout middle school, I was the only foreign student in the school. It was difficult at times to deal with other students. A    3     I started my school year, I began to meet new classmates. I s    4     realized that it was good to have new friends. All of a sudden, I was crowded by a group of people who o    5     me support and gave me strength to face my difficulties.

Thanks to God, I have been very lucky in meeting my new friends. I realize now the importance of having friends and being part of a community(社会、社区). I would advise you to get to know as many friends as you can this year and to form a strong circle of friends that can support one another.

Parents are the first teacher of children. Mum and Dad—they're two of the most important people in your life. You

p     1    see at least one of them every day and, over your life time, they're likely to influence(影响) you more than a     2                  else.

How do you get along with your parents? Here are five ways you can try.

Spend time together. Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV, you can go outside together, try to play a game, or read a book out loudly. If your parents are divorced(离婚), make the most of the time you spend together. You can talk on the phone and email each other.

Be kind. Little things might m     3    a lot to your mum or dad. You can make your parents happy all day with a hug, a card, or a joke. It's also lovely when a kid helps do some h     4                 or cleans up his room without being asked.

Show you care. In Western countries, families are always kissing, hugging, and say "I love you". It's important to show that you care for each other. B     5                 kisses and hugs, kids and parents show their love by respecting(尊敬) each other, and being caring and polite.

Share your feelings and ask for help. Many kids say they'd like their parents to help them when they're upset. But your mum or dad might not know that you're having a problem. Tell your parents if you're sad. If you don't usually do this, try it and you'll be glad if you have done it.

Do your best at whatever you do. You don't have to be p     6     , but when you do your best, you make your parents proud. It makes them happy to see how you're t     7                 into such a great kid. Why? That's because it lets them know they're doing a good job.

    一、阅读单选

Do you still hug your parents? How do you feel when you hug them? When do you need a hug the most?

It was a cold November morning several years ago. My alarm clock had just gone off, but I was having trouble getting out of bed. My dad died a few weeks ago. I felt weighed down by sadness and depression.

Tough and strong, my dad had worked so hard all of his life to support us. He would sometimes shout at my brothers and me, but I always knew that he loved me. Still, he had been raised(养育) in a traditional way and raised us that way too. I couldn’t remember, for example, ever being hugged by him.

After my mom and grandma passed away, my dad moved into grandma’s home. I was so happy to have him close by. I would often visit him and just talk with him about life. But we still seldom touched and never hugged. Finally, his own health began to rapidly fail and within a few months he left us. It was a cold morning when we had his service(追悼会), but I was too cold inside myself to feel it. I couldn’t remember when we’d had our last hug.

I sighed(叹气)and got out of my bed. I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway. I saw my son Jim walking down the hall to meet me. Suddenly, he opened his arms and gave me a heart-felt hug. And just as he did, I heard my dad’s voice deep inside of me say, “Joey, this hug is from me!” I cried and smiled at the same time. At that moment, in the place where heart, mind, and spirit all meet, I felt loved. I felt loved by my dad. I felt loved by life.

“You’re going to do WHAT?” I asked my best friend, Julie, in alarm.

“I’m going to try out for the cheer-leading squad(啦啦队), ” she said, eyes fixed on the ground. We had been best friends since the second grade and we did everything together. We had made many plans about what we would do this year, but now she was going off on her own. I was sure that if she joined the cheer-leading squad, she would become best friends with someone else and I couldn’t stand the thought.

“Why are you doing this? Do you really want to hang around with those girls instead of me?” I cried, my voice filled with anger.

“It’s not about the girls.” Julie said. “It’s about the sport. I want to be on the squad at the high school level because they win scholarships(奖学金)at state competitions, and I have a better chance if I’m on the squad here,” she explained. “Besides,” she added,“it’s not like I’m leaving the country or something.”

“Goodbye,” I walked away, leaving Julie standing with a sad look on her face. I didn’t want to listen to her explanation anymore and didn’t want to forgive(原谅)her, either.

The rest of that week I was unhappy and I avoided Julia in the hall. I planned to watch the first game and take no notice of Julie. Instead, I was amazed by the enthusiasm(热情)and skills of Julie’s cheering. Although she was the youngest member of the team, Julie enthusiastically led cheer after cheer. I saw how her face lit up with joy. I was shocked as I realized that she loved the sport. Trying out for the team had nothing to do with me—maybe it was just something she wanted to do.

I came near her shyly, but Julie smiled immediately. “Hey, you were really great,”I began. Then I added at once, “I’m so sorry I’ve been rude to you about your joining the squad.”

Julie smiled and replied, “A group of us are going for ice cream. Why don’t you come along?”

________, but I smiled in return. As I walked towards the cheerleaders, I realized there was room in Julie’s life for all of us.

AJulie would be away from her. BJulie would be more excellent than her.

CThe cheerleaders were rude. DThe cheer-leading squad was not famous.

7Which of the following sentences can be put in the ________?

AJulie turned away with a smile on her face BJulie asked me to join the cheer-leading squad

CJulie’s quick forgiveness made my eyes burn DJulie’s excellent performance moved people

    A②-③-①-④ B②-④-①-③ C④-①-③-② D④-②-①-③

9What can be the best title for the passage?

APains and Gains BFears and Cheers CHealth and Wealth DInterest and Ability

    二、完形填空

About a year ago, a couple with 3 children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any noise from the children, but the parents were always ____10____ them, in a frightening way. We met often in the hallway when we were coming or going. I always spoke, but the only answer I ever got was a hello from the 4-year-old girl.

I usually go out for breakfast and one day when I returned, they were just coming from their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things ____11____ I wasn’t in a hurry. The parents were telling her to get in the car immediately. I looked up and saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me.

As a handicapped (有残疾的) man, I can’t hurry at anything, but I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling like a lovely angle. I was so touched by her small act of ____12____. That afternoon I was shopping at the K-mart and I saw a white bear. I thought of the girl and said to myself, “I believe she would like it”, so I bought it.

The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was so proud of her bear and thanked me like I had never been thanked before. The mother and father both thanked me.

Now when we meet in the hall we all speak, and in a friendly manner I might add. As time passes, I don’t hear that shouting as often. ____13____, hardly at all.

Last night we had about four inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered how I was going to keep my doctor’s appointment.

When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow cleaned. I can’t express how I felt at that moment. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building, so when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the good man that cleaned my snow. He said ____14____. He wanted to but his wife said she wanted to do it.

Isn’t it amazing how a 4-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? My guardian angel (守护天使) says that good things usually come from the ____15____.

Holin: What made you decide to stay here for such a long time?

Jochen: It is exciting to be here and it is a(an) _____19_____ city to live in. A lot of things are going on here. Holin: Do you have any impressive Shanghai story?

Jochen: I’m always curious. For me, there was no culture shock. I ran up the stairs two at a time, holding the book from the library, the one with my essay printed out in it. I couldn’t wait to tell my parents. Before I could open my mouth, my mother looked at my book and frowned (皱眉).

“Another new book, Mia?” she said. “You should be spending more time doing maths. Something you can actually get good at.” Then she became homesick. “You know when I was your age, I used to attend my brother’s maths lessons...”

Yesh, yeah, yeah. I didn’t have time for this.

“I’m not you, Mom,” I yelled. The words came shooting out of my mouth, and my mom was shocked.“I’m sorry. I just mean... Maybe I like something else.”

“Like what?” she asked. She put her broom down and crossed her arms. I bit my lip.

    “Like writing?”

“English writing?” she asked, “like it was the most useless thing in the world, like I’d said basket weaving?”

    I nodded.

“You gotta be native at English. And I’m sorry, but we are just not. You can, however, be native at maths.”

“I don’t want to be native at maths...” I said. My mother frowned.

“You’re not getting it, are you?” she said. She sat down on the bed and looked at me in the eye. “You just can’t be as good as the white kids in their language, honey. It’s their language.”

My gaze sank to the floor.
