A Natural History of the Future
Over the past century, humans have made great technological achievements with which we have found ways to control nature. From river dams(大坝) to huge one-crop fields,we continue to try to change nature for our goals-so much that it seems we may be in danger of influencing it seriously.
In A Natural History of the Future, biologist Rob Dunn thinks that nothing could be further from the truth: rather than asking whether nature will let us live, we'd better ask whether we will let nature last. Although we try our best, or worst, to control the biological world, life has its own laws, and no matter what man does, he cannot change them.
Explaining several basic laws of ecology(生态), Dunn shows why life cannot be stopped. We grow one single crop on the field, only to find new life appearing to attack them. We throw away poisonous(有毒的) waste, only to find microbes(微生物) taking it over. And even in the London Tube, we have seen a new type of mosquito appear to take advantage of a place that is clearly not fit to live. Life will not follow our plans. Instead, Dunn shows us the future of living things and the challenges that the next generation may face.
A Natural History of the Future sets a new standard for understanding the different kinds of life and our future as a kind of creature.

On a Saturday afternoon, you find most kids outside playing games. Kids are made for the outdoors, with their endless energy and the easy way in which they make friends. It's not different for Kameron, an ordinary, fun-loving 7-year-old girl who loves to draw out the world’s longest hopscotch(跳格子) on the sidewalk.
In between jump-rope games, basketball shootouts and skateboard races, Kameron takes time to do something special for her elderly neighbors. Kameron’s neighborhood is home to a good mix of young families and elderly neighbors whose children have long since left home. Kameron first started waving to them. Most of them smiled back.
Then Kameron decided that some of them needed a little pleasure. So she ran home, took her violin and made the rounds. “Can I play you a song?” she asked, after knocking on the door.
Gustav smiled wide. He has beautiful white hair and a soft accent(口音). He grew up in Scandinavia and is a wood finisher. His wife Vivian has a smile that fills their tiny home. She stood awkwardly, and had difficulty moving about. It looked terribly uncomfortable. Vivian has had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩) for over 20 years.Gustav is her full-time caregiver. They’ve replaced their daily walks with afternoon drives, but even those are getting too difficult for Vivian.
Gustav let Kameron in, and Vivian took hold of both their arms and pulled to her chair. On the table beside her was a photo of her with Gustav when they were young and energetic, traveling around Europe, Egypt and Iceland. In the photo, Vivian is very beautiful, and Gustav is handsome.
“Want me to play your favorite song?” Kameron asked. Of course,” Gustav answered. It was the only song Kameron knew.
The small violin rested seriously under Kameron’s chin(下巴). She played as best she could.Vivian beat her leg to keep rhythm(节奏) for Kameron.Gustav held Vivian’s other hand. It was not the performance that was moving, but the memories it brought.

Americans celebrate Labor Day this year on September 5. The national holiday began more than 100 years ago to honor low-paid factory workers.
Labor Day also marks the end of summer. Many students return to school after Labor Day. The hot days of summer turn cooler. Many Americans celebrate the holiday with an outdoor family picnic.
But Labor Day started with a struggle(奋斗). On May 1,1889,workers marched(游行) on the streets of Paris, France. International Labor Day was born. Most industrialized countries in the world—except the United States and Canada—celebrate Labor Day on the first of May.
On September 5, 1882, in New York City, about 10,000 workers walked through the streets to show the strength of labor organizations. For many years after that, American workers used the first Monday in September to ask for better working conditions and pay. Music was a part of many of those marches.
Labor songs traditionally tell stories of conflicts(冲突) and hopes for a better life. Many traditional American labor songs came from workers in the coal mines of the South. Mine owners were against workers’ unions. In Kentucky, the company police searched for union leaders. They waited outside a worker’s home for several days to stop him from organizing marches. The coal miner's wife, Florence Reece, stayed inside with her children. She wrote this song, “Which Side Are You On?”
Another American labor song is called “Bread and Roses”. Based on a poem by James Oppenheim, it was published in December of 1911. The poem speaks about the women's labor movement. At that time, conditions in factories, where many women worked, were dreadful. A fire at a clothing factory in New York killed 146 people.
A month after Oppenheim’s poem was published, women workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts went on with their marches, which won them higher pay and better working conditions. Oppenheim’s poem received more attention.
28. What does Labor Day mean to students in the United States?
A. It’s time to have a picnic. B. Their summer vacation is over.
C. It teaches them to respect labor. D.They can learn about history through activities.
29. Why did the company police wait outside a worker’s home?
A.To force him to stay at home. B. To prevent his wife writing the song.
C.To try to communicate with him. D. To stop marches from being organized.
30. What does the underlined word “dreadful” mean in paragraph 6?
A. Pleasant. B. Freezing. C. Terrible. D. Controllable.
31. What do we know about Oppenheim?
A. He cared for working women’s rights.
B.He created the song “Bread and Roses”.
C. He reported the fire at a clothing factory.
D. He led the labor movement in Lawrence.

Farmers in Italy’s famous Tuscany area are struggling to save grape and olive crops influenced by a heatwave and dry conditions. A lack of(缺乏) rainfall since spring has even influenced plants that traditionally grow well in hot and dry weather.
In San Casciano in Val di Pesa, near Florence, olive trees line the hillsides. But farmers say the dry soil is preventing the trees from producing the usual production of fruit.
Tuscany is famous around the world for its olive oil and wine from grapes. But growers in the area say dry,hot weather always has a great influence on the crops and harms(损害) production. But this year's heat and lack of water happened during an important time, when the flowers were changing to fruit. Without water, many flowers fall to the ground before they can produce fruit. This year’s oil production could be cut by up to 60 percent.
Olive growers have decided to change some of their farming methods. They have used a new watering method to make up for the lack of rainfall and hot temperatures. The method works with a pipe placed under the trees to drop water little by little.
The influences of weather change have harmed production and plants, but they have also created new areas in Italy where crops can be grown. A few years ago, olive farms were mainly found in hot and dry areas such as Sicily. Now, areas such as Val d’Aosta in the far north of Italy—which is famous for its snow sport holiday places and mountains—can produce their own oil.
Climate change is also influencing wine crops in Tuscany. In Chianti, for example, September is normally the month for the yearly grape harvest(收获). But with continued high temperatures, many grapes are ripening(成熟) earlier than expected.Apart from the drop in grapes caused by the current heatwave, wine growers also have to deal with other serious weather events. An ice storm recently harmed 40 percent of grapes in the area.
32. What was the reason for the drop in oil production this year?
A. The dry weather lasted a longer time.
B. The fruit dropped to the ground before harvest.
C. The dry weather happened in a special period.
D.It was uncommon for the crops to experience dry weather.
33. Which of the following is a good influence of the dry weather?
A. It increases the planting areas of crops.
B. It encourages better farming methods.
C. It improves the taste of crops.
D. It attracts more tourists to the area.
34. What does the author mainly tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The influences of poor grapes on red wine.
B.The harm brought by an ice storm to grapes.
C. The production of grapes dropped because of dry weather.
D. The influences of bad weather on grapes.
35. Which is the best title for the text?
A.Farmers in Italy Are Expecting Some Rain
B. Dry Weather Influences Italy's Famous Grape & Olive Crops
C. More Areas in Italy Are Fit for Crops Because of Warming Climate
D. New Ways Are Introduced to Fight Against Dry Weather

Many of the vegetables we grow in our gardens produce seeds(种子), which can grow into plants if collected and stored correctly. Late summer is the perfect time to start collecting them.
Make sure the seeds are from plants that you have planted well for many years. These are plants in their normal forms. 36
Hybridized(杂交)plants usually produce the vegetables sold in big food stores. They are created from two or more different kinds of plants to get the best qualities of each. Trying to grow seeds from these plants will not lead to happy results. This kind of plants will not have the expected results but instead carry the genes(基因) of just one of its parents. 37 For this reason, it is best not to grow seeds from store-bought food.
Many plants become cross-pollinated(异花授粉) in the garden.Bees, flies, animals and wind spread pollen(花粉)from one plant to another. To ensure the seeds will grow into plants, give them space. 38
To avoid cross-pollination surprises, plant only one kind of each vegetable from which you can harvest seeds. 39 Grow only one kind of tomato in your garden. If that feels too limiting, go ahead and experiment. Choose plants that grow well every year so there are smaller risks from cross-pollination. The plants will be fine even if they are not what you expected.
40 Add something to the container to prevent any remaining wetness. But take it out after a few days to avoid over drying the seeds.
A. When will the seeds come off the flower?
B. It is impossible to tell which parent that will be.
C. What should you do if you want to save tomato seeds?
D. Their seeds will produce plants as good as their parents.
E. Put seeds in a cool, dry place in a covered glass container.
F.Place different kinds of the same crop as far apart as possible.
G. In areas with cold winters, simply leave plants in the ground over winter.

Life never really turns out the way we expect it to. We have dreams and expectations. And dream-come-true stories are everywhere—except, it may seem, in our own lives.
As a child, Barbara never quite found the bond(纽带) with her parents that all children need. Her father left the family early, and her mother did menial(卑微的) jobs.
“I couldn’t let my life keep me from caring about other people,” she says. “Maybe it’s unfair or just the way it turns out for people, but I still have a son.”
Barbara raised her son the best she knew how and “he turned out pretty well,” she says, smiling. And after the hard years of making ends meet and giving him a good start, she made a career change.
“I never thought I was supposed to feel sorry for myself,” she says. “And I like people.”
Barbara works as an in-home caregiver for elderly people in their last year of life. She spends 10-hour days, six days a week, with people who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia(痴呆), sometimes sleeping on their sofa when they are afraid to spend a night alone. Most don’t have families close by, and Barbara becomes the person they rely on for everything: meals, bathing, bathroom duties, daily walks if they can, mental exercises like crossword puzzles and re-learning family faces.
She only charges what the family can afford and only works with one client(客户) at a time. “They become the family I never had, over and over again,” she says, laughing.
The spaces left empty in Barbra's childhood are filled with memories shared with her from lives fading away in the dusk. For 30 years, she has been making people feel good at a time when most would just be waiting to die, alone and unnoticed. When seeing their faces when they are with Barbara, you’d think the last years were the best.
“I’ve found something I never had,” Barbara says. “We make each other happy. So I try to give them what they want most.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She’s learned from her experiences that old people want their loved ones to visit them.
I posted Barbara’s story online to call on children to visit their parents.

M: How long does your report have to be?
W: It has to be ten pages long, but I already have twenty pages of notes!
M: Well, you should probably figure out what main points you want to make and then only include the important part about them. It’ll be too much to include everything from her life.
W: Yeah. That’s good advice...Hey, by the way, can I use your computer to write it?
M: Of course. But I lent it to my friend earlier. I think he'll be done using it soon. I’ll go to his room and get it after this class.
W: Thanks a lot.
Text 10
W: Here in the USA, college life can be as interesting as you can imagine. It is a time to experience new things and studies alone do not please the students. This is where out-of-class activities come in. These activities include clubs, organizations, groups and sports. They are all directed by students themselves. Each organization has an advisor, but student members plan all activities and events. In a university there are many student organizations for students to choose from. Each student is sure to have a club or group that fits his needs or interests. The clubs include public service, sports and hobbies. For example, there are swimming clubs, yoga clubs, dance clubs, etc. If you cannot find a club that you sty are interested in, you can have an idea for a new club, and form one yourself.
Clubs and organizations help students discover their interests, which may turn into lifelong hobbies or even become their jobs in life.

One possible version:
She’s learned from her experiences that old people want their loved ones to visit them. Therefore, she tries her best to give more help to the elderly and make them happier. Whenever she serves an elderly family, she will learn about their loved ones, especially their children. She will take down their home address and contact information. She will chat with them to learn about the old people's living habits in order to better serve them. She also tells them about the old people’s current situation and encourages them to pay as many visits as possible.
I posted Barbara’s story online to call on children to visit their parents. The response to my post was positive. Many people told me they were moved by the story and told me about their experiences. Some people said that they rarely visited their parents because they were so busy at work. When their parents died, they felt very sad and pitiful, but it was too late. Others were happy to tell me that they were inspired by her story, and they now often visit their parents, who are very happy.
