Qian Jiaqi, 39, who took up cycling in Beijing as a hobby, has seen a well-known route he often takes after work become increasingly crowded with fellow cyclists during evenings and weekends.

“This summer on Chang, an Avenue, it’s like the Tour do France every night as cyclists on a wide range of bikes constantly try to catch each other,”Qian said.“On the avenue, traffic jams are now forming in bike lanes, as well as in those designed for motor vehicles. It’s quite funny in a way.”

According to business insiders and experienced cyclists such as Qian, cycling in urban areas has become increasingly popular over the past two years in China, which was known as the “Kingdom of Bicycles”in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The emergence of COVID-19, the introduction of cycle lanes, and the seeking of healthier lifestyles have helped relight the nation’s passion for cycling.

Chang an Avenue is the most popular route for cyclists in Beijing, with its two cycle lanes positioned alongside those for motor vehicles. Motorcycles were banned from the cycle lanes on May 9 last year, providing a safer and smoother experience for those turning the pedals. Chinese scholar trees planted alongside the bike lanes shade cyclists from the summer heat.

The avenue is also the perfect place to observe different types of cyclists. Those such as Qian always attempt to improve their time, so it’s easy to sense their frustration when they have to stop at red lights.Others prefer to ride at a slower pace, never missing the opportunity to take photos of Tian, an men Square at sunset on their phones.

Qian said, “Many people have discovered the therapeutic benefits of cycling during the COVID-19 epidemic. The measures taken to control outbreaks of the disease have resulted in the public longing for activities that give them the feeling of freedom and which are good for their health. Cycling ticks all the boxes.”

    4. What can we see in Chang’ an Avenue at night this summer?

    A. Big crowds getting together. B. Beautiful scenery like Tour do France.

    C. Bike exhibition showing the latest style. D. Traffic jams due to a large number of cyclists.

    5. What can we learn about the popularity of cycling?

    A. The pursuit of healthy lifestyles promoted cycling.

B The appearance of cycle lanes made cycling possible.

    C. The emergence of COVID-19 reduced the popularity.

    D. The number of cyclists rapidly increased in the 1980s.

    6. What is the purpose of banning motorcycles from the cycle lanes?

A To make room for the tree planting. B. To solve the problem of traffic jams

    C. To ensure the bike lanes available for cyclists. D. To provide the bike lanes for cycling competitions.

    7. Where is the text probably taken from?

    A. The society section in newspaper. B. A sports magazine.

    C. The health section in newspaper. D. A science magazine.

    C

Although we live in an era where everything seems to be available immediately, our study suggests that today’s kids can delay gratification(满足感) longer than children in the 1960s and 1980s,“ said University of Minnesota psychologist Stephanie M. Carlson.” This finding stands in great contrast with the assumption by adults that today’s children have less self-control than previous generations.

The original marshmallow(棉花糖) test conducted by researchers at Stanford University involved a series of experiments in which children aged between 3 and 5 years were offered one treat that they could eat immediately or a larger treat if they waited. Researchers then left the room to see how long the children would wait and watched from behind a one-way mirror.

Interestingly, today's adults thought that children nowadays would be more impulsive and less able to wait, Carlson found. "Our findings serve as an example of how our beliefs can be wrong and how it's important to do research,” said co-author Yuichi Shoda, PhD at the University of Washington.

The researchers offered several possible explanations for why children in the 2000s waited longer than those in prior decades. They noted a statistically significant increase in IQ scores in the last several decades. Another explanation may be society's increased focus on the importance of early education, according to Carlson. The primary objective of preschool changed from largely custodial care (监护) to school readiness in the 1980s. Parenting also has changed in ways that help promote the development of executive function, such as being more supportive of children's self-control, the researchers noted.

Walter Mischel of Columbia University, who co-authored this paper, noted that “while the results indicate that the children’s ability to delay is not weakened on the marshmallow test, the findings do not speak to their willingness to delay gratification when faced with the many temptations now available in everyday life.”

    8. According to the passage, what is the adults' assumption about today's children?

    A. They are not easy to please.

    B. They are less able to control themselves.

    C. They don't like things that are easy to get.

    D. They have different personalities from previous generations.

    9. What does the underlined word "impulsive " in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A productive B. considerate

    C. clear-minded D. hot-headed

    10. What did the researchers find about children in the 2000s?

    A. They are more prepared to go to school.

    B. They are not as clever as previous generations.

    C. They are taught self-control only by their teachers.

D They don’t need any custodial care in their early childhood.

    11. What does the author want to tell readers in the last paragraph?

    A. Most children nowadays can't resist the temptations of everyday life.

    B. Children chose to delay gratification willingly in the marshmallow test.

    C. The test can’t accurately measure children's willingness to delay gratification.

    D. Children’s ability to delay gratification is weakened because there are many temptations.

    D

Commercial aviation (航空) alone contributes around three percent of total global carbon emissions (排放). But the industry is actively looking for green solutions in the form of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In a study released this week, a team of researchers from the U. S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) details a method of transforming food waste into SAF that can be used in existing engines. Making SAF is a more complicated process—it’s got to be very similar to the petrol-based aviation fuel we use today in commercial flights.

The researchers use volatile fatty acids (挥发性脂肪酸)(VFAs) from smelly food waste and transform it into simple paraffin molecules (石蜡分子) that can be used in fuel and really aren’t all that chemically different from traditional emissions-heavy fuels. There are other renewable biofuels that have been made from biomass (生物质), specifically oil and fat from vegetables and animals, but using the ever-mounting pile of food waste to fuel flights broadens those possibilities.

Derek Vardon, a senior research engineer at NREL, says major companies are eager to get involved in SAF because some sustainable solutions, such as battery-operated commercial flights, just aren’t possible yet with current battery technology. A battery-powered plane would be too heavy to fly long distances—“So using SAF that works in the same way as the fuel we have is a simpler way to trade out traditional emissions-heavy fuels.” Vardon also says that “because the wet waste would normally go to a landfill and break down to release greenhouse gases, the process of making and using SAF could actually have a negative carbon footprint when it is dramatically used.”

A major question as the researchers move forward with this type of research is if it is possible to run an airplane engine on fully renewable biofuel. Rolls-Royce recently did a test on one of their engines with 100 percent SAF and it worked. “This fuel is not crazy and we can solve these problems,” Vardon says.

    12. Which of the following is TRUE about SAF?

    A. It can be used to reduce carbon emissions globally.

    B. It’s less functional than the petrol-based aviation fuel.

    C. It’s composed of VFAs and simple paraffin molecules.

    D. It is virtually impossible to be made from biomass like oil and fat.

    13. What is the focus of Vardon’s words in paragraph 3?

    A. The benefits of food rubbish-generated SAF. B. The environmental impacts of the wet waste.

    C. The simple process of making and using SAF. D. The future of battery-operated commercial flights.

    14. What is the author’s purpose of referring to Rolls-Royce’s test in the last paragraph?

    A. To promote its production. B. To confirm the potential of SAF.

    C. To show off its powerful airplane engines. D. To express doubt about the research.

    15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Natural emergence of renewable biofuels B. Green alternative to emissions-heavy fuels

    C. Unavoidable decline of commercial aviation D. Gradual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
