Charles Bridge is a 14th century stone bridge linking the two sides of Prague. This grand bridge is one of the city's finest attractions, and is the main route connecting the Old Town with the Lesser Town and Prague Castle.
From Charles Bridge visitors enjoy fairytale views of the Prague skyline. The wide river, with beautiful buildings on both sides, flows below it.Prague Castle towers above not far away. Here you are truly in the centre of the city.
Charles Bridge is full of people during the day.Street artists paint and musicians play here and there. If you are travelling there, look out for the jazz band, which is especially entertaining. But for a truly romantic and less crowded walk, try the early morning or any time in the evening. There are not so many people in the early morning or in the evening. That way you can take a relaxing walk.
King Charles Ⅳ arranged to build the bridge. The foundation stone was laid in 1357.Charles Ⅳ's favourite architect and builder,Peter Parler, watched over most of the work. The first idea was to build a bridge for knight tournaments(锦标赛),and for many years the only decoration on the bridge was a simple cross.Later, the Catholic desire for beautiful designs resulted in 30 statues(雕塑)being erected between 1600 and 1800.
There are now 75 statues on Charles Bridge, but most are copies,as floods and other natural disasters over the centuries damaged the original ones.Perhaps the most interesting,as well as the oldest,is that of John of Nepomuk. It is the 8th from the right as you cross towards Prague Castle.
The entrance to Charles Bridge is marked at both ends by towers:the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Mala Strana Bridge Tower.

(2021·山东省潍坊市高一3月阶段检测)I watched the two of them, both one year old, on the floor, surrounded by candy. He crawled on his hands while she sat there looking at birthday dress. The colourful fishier pinata(彩罐) had just been broken and the candy littered the ground. Both of their kids were too young to realise that they were sitting, and crawling around in a collection of wrapped sugar goodies. They were surrounded with edible(可食用的) goodies but had no clue!
Suddenly I saw the life metaphor(比喻). If we are the “babies” and the candy is “opportunity”, often we don't recognize it because the opportunity comes wrapped as hard work. We may not give the wrapper the time of day, unless we realise that inside there's a piece of delicious candy.
Every tree starts as a seed.Every person who becomes wellknown was once someone nobody “knew”.So what has changed for these people? Did the world suddenly wake up and find they have the potential to succeed? Of course not. These people worked for long periods of time before they saw any payoff.
It can be disheartening when you're starting out. There's a huge learning curve for almost everything.Just when you feel like you're making rapid progress, you realise there's more to learn. Every new door opens to a brandnew room, with another door at the end.
When I was in recovery from my eating disorder, there were many opportunities that I didn't recognize as candy. At first, I didn't see therapy (治疗) leading anywhere. It was only by going to therapy every week for a year that I was finally able to realise the opportunities. I had the opportunities to examine and adjust my thinking, and to challenge the negative mindsets(思维模式) I had about my life.
When I look back,I find that many of the opportunities that allowed positive growth didn't always appear easy or fun. They often appeared as something that looked like hard work. But when we focus, consistently show up, and put in hard work, it will result in candy.

Painting
The art of creating pictures using colours, shapes and lines is called painting. Museums and galleries show the paintings of professional (专业的) artists. But painting is also a popular form of entertainment and creative expression.
16 Experienced painters usually use a brush to apply oil paints to a canvas cloth surface. Young painters usually use watercolors on pieces of paper. Very young children may use finger paints to create paintings.
Painters can use their art to express devotion to a religion, to tell a story, to express feelings and ideas, or simply to present a pleasing picture. Religious paintings often show a god or a scene from a sacred text (圣典). Other common subjects have been famous legends and events in history, as well as scenes from daily life. Artists also paint portraits, or pictures of people. 17 All of these types of paintings show the human figures in some way.
Some kinds of paintings do not focus on people. In landscape (风景) painting the focus is on scenes from nature.Artists also paint still objects such as fruit and vegetables. 18 Some artists communicate their ideas through pictures that do not represent any object.
19 Paintings dating back 15,000 years have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. 20 Samples of painted pottery (陶器) from at least 5,000 years ago have been found in China and Iran. The ancient Egyptians decorated their temples with beautiful paintings. People in ancient Greece painted decorative objects such as vases in addition to the walls of temples.
A.These works are called stilllife paintings.
B.These works can communicate a special feeling.
C.Humans have been making paintings for thousands of years.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was doing a big cleanup recently and my kids were helping when my son,Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark coin inside.“Mum,can I have this? Can I play with this coin?”he asked.I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.
In 1991,there was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country,Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there,we moved on to work at a health clinic in neighbouring country,Burkina Faso.“It's much greener in Burkina.Even the Coke tastes better,”the locals assured us.
Yet the fact was quite the opposite.Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina,we began to unload.I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness,a motorbike with two men approached slowly.Without warning, one of the men grabbed my daypack as the motorbike swept close by.Within seconds, the pair were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.
With my passport, money, traveller's cheques all in the bag,I was in deep trouble. How frustrating! All I wanted was to leave this hellhole! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day,I was stopped by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face.“Cadeau (‘gift’in French)!Cadeau!”she cried.I'd had enough!I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and...everything!I told her angrily and firmly in French.“I have no‘cadeau’.I have no money.A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country.I cannot give you anything.NOTHING!”The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave a broad smile.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
She reached into the pocket of her dress.
There was a slight touch on my hand;looking down,I saw my son looking at me,curious.
【参考范文】
She reached into the pocket of her dress.“Then I will give you a cadeau,”she announced.Kindly, she placed an old, dark brown coin in my hand.In surprise,I looked at the coin, then at the woman. At that moment,I felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude towards the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me:something priceless.I had taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from the beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view towards them, and her smile hit the deepest of my heart.
There was a slight touch on my hand;looking down,I saw my son looking at me,curious.“Mum,can I have this? Can I play with this coin?”he repeated.“You can't play with it,honey.”I touched my son on the head and said slowly,“This one is special. It is an unforgettable precious memory to me.Come and let me tell you a story.”
