Roger Conner is a modern-day Horatio Alger hero. Roger started out as an unpaid worker in a small flower shop. He has become the owner of a florist company whose sales are well over $100,000 a year.
One day when Roger was only twelve, he stopped at a local flower shop. He asked the owner if he could work for him, without pay, in order to learn the business. Roger started working every day after school and on weekends. After two years on the job, he finally asked for a small salary. The owners told him he “wasn’t good enough to be paid.” So he quit, and found a paying job at another local flower shop. He worked hard there, but after six months they laid him off because business was slow. Not discouraged, Roger decided to do it alone and started his own flower store in a basement. He started his business with only sixty-five dollars. He bought old refrigerators at garage sales and knocked the shelves out. This turned them into coolers for his fresh-cut flowers. His business grew rapidly as he built up a reputation for top quality and fine service.
In 1977, Roger bought out the flower store where he had worked without pay for over two years. The people who said he “wasn’t good enough” were astonished to find that they were being taken over by a teenager. He had plans to renovate (整修) the whole store.
One of the reasons the owners sold out to Roger was that the store wasn’t doing well. But after Roger took over ownership and redid the store, business started booming. In fact, business was so good that after one year, he celebrated by buying out the other store where he had worked. Roger then combined both stores and moved to a location in the center of his town.
The new store has 2,000 square feet and seven employees. And he did it all before he reached the age of twenty.

C
A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt differently; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel enthusiastic for others and for ourselves. And enthusiasm is a heartfelt emotion that conveys loving-kindness to everyone it touches.
The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.
41. The author thought of his friend’s question as a good one because ________.
A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion B. it made him recall something during his childhood
C. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair D. he learned something from the question as a youngster
42. Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.
A. keep us from making everything perfect B. keep us from doing everything in our power
C. make us face unfair treatment bravely D. make us know it’s our duty to perfect things
43. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. it’s nice to accept the injustice of life B. it’s nice to surrender to the life
C. we should not surrender to the life D. we should not feel sorry for everything
44. In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact” refers to the fact that ________.
A. you should not pity for others B. life isn’t and won’t be fair
C. compassion is heartfelt emotion D. pity is a self-defeating emotion
45. According to the author, when recognizing life injustice, you may ________.
A. take measures to solve life problem B. feel pity to other people
C. do nothing to improve our life D. receive enthusiasm from others

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.
I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.
We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.
46. What’s Renee’s job in the Carmel Fire Department? (No more than 5 words)
47. What makes Renee balance between doing housework and working so much? (No more than 5 words)
48. Why does the author-think Renee Butts is a true hero? (No more than 15 words)
49. How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 4?(No more than 5 words)
50. What do you think of Renee? Please give your reasons. (No more than 25 words)
