We all know your student loan will only go so far. So what can you do to save those pennies (便士) and eventually a pretty substantial amount in the long run? Here is some advice from L&S Editor Marianne Lampon.
FOOD
—Buy the supermarket's Own Brand products: When it comes to items such as cheese, milk, and more, the Own Brand products can be bought much cheaper but without lowering the quality.
—Coupons (优惠券),coupons, coupons: It's really worth hitting the Internet for some extra coupons, especially for meals out with a big group. Keep an eye on restaurants that offer a cheaper Set Menu or that do 2 for 1 deals on main courses.
STUDENT-ONLY OFFERS
—Fresher's Fair: Say hello to free pens, bottle openers and a bunch of things you never knew you needed. Freshers get involved!
—Student discount in stores and online: Showing your University ID card will save you at least 10% with a lot of online or offline businesses. As a result, you'll feel slightly less guilty about buying those new pair of Nike's.
FASHION
The shift from summer to autumn can be a sad time, but it needn't hurt your wallet!
—Accessories (配饰): Basically, wear your summer clothes with warm and comfortable accessories. How about those shorts? Just team them with a pair of tights and you're good to go.
—Charity shops: The perfect way to stay on-trend and at a super affordable price.
So there it is! Sticking to some of these ideas will really help save some money in the long run, proving a little really does go a long way.

I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us;some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.
24. How did the writer first respond to Paul’s travel plan?
A. Scared. B. Puzzled. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
25. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?
A. He was a western journalist.
B. He had a knowledge of China.
C. He came to China several times.
D. He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.
26. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?
A. They honored the ancestors.
B. They set off in high spirits.
C. They satisfied the locals' curiosity.
D. They built bonds with people.
27. What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?
A. To share and reflect on a journey.
B. To suggest a new way of travel.
C. To advocate protection of biodiversity.
D. To introduce and promote Chinese culture.
C
Have you ever suddenly developed an appetite from a passing glance at a freeway billboard featuring a brightly colored cheeseburger, or decided to step into a candy or ice cream store displaying a window full of lively shades and hues (色调)of sweet treats? If so, you are in good company. Unless we are medically restricted or strictly dieting, we are not likely to resist inviting fare simply because we recognize the lack of nutritional value.
Devina Wadhera and Elizabeth D.Capaldi-Phillips in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food recognize the impact of sensory cues (信号)on food consumption and enjoyment, and the potential they have to promote healthy eating behavior. They cite previous research in providing some interesting examples of the visual impact of different color schemes (方案)on taste and food enjoyment. They note that pink food on a white plate was considered sweeter and more flavorful than the same food on a black plate. Apparently, we consume with more of our senses than we realize. So given the rainbow of colors around us when faced with so many appealing food choices, is there any way to control our appetite? Thankfully, some research says yes.
Oliver Genschow demonstrated that when it comes to eating less colors impact consumption. They specifically researched the effect of the color red. They found that people ate fewer pretzels when using a red plate, as opposed to white or blue, and drank less from a red cup than a blue cup. They suggest that the color red reduces food and drink intake by functioning as a stop signal.
But when it comes to healthy eating, instead of putting on a pair of sunglasses to block the inviting hues of food cues, consider the value of discipline. Healthy eating involves intentional choices, not mindless responses to sensory cues. And before you invest in many red tableware to slim down, remember that what goes onto those plates is much more important.
28.What may be a major reason for us to refuse eye-catching food?
A. The shortage of nutrition.
B. The rich color of fine foods.
C. The doctor's instructions.
D. Advertisements everywhere.
29.What might be dealt with in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food?
A. Benefits of different color schemes.
B. Interesting examples of food service.
C. Potentials to promote food consumption.
D. Effects of sensory cues on eating behavior.
30.What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Follow the sensory response.
B. Make food choices sensibly.
C. Wear sunglasses to block colors.
D. Avoid colorful food intentionally.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A. How People can Control Their Appetite.
B. How People are Tricked by Color Schemes.
C. How Colors Impact Food Appeal and Appetite.
D. How Bright Colors Make Food More Appealing.
D
By the end of the century,if not sooner, the world's oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.
At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物)called phytoplankton. Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface. Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton. Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean's appearance.
Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean,an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean's warming trend. Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.
Stephanie Dutkiewicz,a scientist in MIT's Center for Global Change Science, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 3℃,it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic,a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener. “Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing. ”she said,“but the type of phytoplankton is changing. ”
32. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A. The various patterns at the ocean surface.
B. The cause of the changes in ocean colour.
C. The way light reflects off marine organisms.
D. The efforts to fuel the growth of phytoplankton.
33. What does the underlined word“vulnerable”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Sensitive. B. Beneficial C. Significant D. Unnoticeable
34. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Phytoplankton play a declining role in the marine ecosystem.
B. Dutkiewicz's model aims to project phytoplankton changes
C. Phytoplankton have been used to control global climate
D. Oceans with more phytoplankton may appear greener.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To assess the consequences of ocean colour changes
B. To analyse the composition of the ocean food chain
C. To explain the effects of climate change on oceans
D. To introduce a new method to study phytoplankton
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
My husband and I just spent a week in Paris. 36 So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard. It was so tiny that we had to leave our suitcases in the hallway.
The place wasn’t entirely authentic, though. Unlike a normal Parisian apartment, the plumbing (水管) worked. 37 Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said, “Ouverture des portes,” in perfect French. That is the only French phrase I mastered, and it’s a shame I don’t have much use for it.
Parisians are different from you and me. They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. 38 French strawberries do not taste like cardboard. Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.
39 On our first morning in Paris, I went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries. I bought a handful of perfectly ripe small strawberries and a little sweet melon. My husband and I agreed they were the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!
In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency (效率). You can tell this by café life. French cafés are always crowded. 40 When do these people work? The French take their 35-hour workweek seriously — so seriously that some labor unions recently struck a deal with a group of companies limiting the number of hours that independent contractors can be on call.
A. Not all the customers are tourists.
B. The quality of life in France is equally excellent.
C. There was a nice kitchen and a comfortable bed.
D. The amazing food is mainly consumed by local farmers.
E. That’s not the only reason the French eat less than we do.
F. Our aim was to see if we could live, in some way, like real Parisians.
G. The food is so delicious that you don’t need much of it to make you happy.

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?" the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Sir. I am selling these magazines, and I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw some dog figurines(小雕像) on the fireplace. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here about dogs since you like dogs so much, ” said the boy. But the old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “ No, I don't need any magazines of any kind.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

M:Hi, Laura. Are you on your way to the school hall?
W:Yeah. Our teacher told us there is a guest speaker here to give the students a special lecture. What is it about?
M:It's the first in a series of safety lectures for the graduating class. The speaker is a man who was injured in a car accident.
W: That must be the man in the wheelchair I saw in the hallway this morning. Why is he speaking to us?
M:They want to warn us about the dangers of speeding.
W:That makes sense. How many more lectures will there be?
M: We have one next week, about classroom safety, and one the week after, about travel safety.
W:Classroom safety?
M:You know, because we are taking classes like Wood Working, Metal Working, and Cooking. Which one did you take?
W:I already know how to cook, so I took the first one. And you?
M: Metal Working. I help my dad out in his shop already, so it's an easy “A" for me. W:OK,I have to go. Talk to you later.
M:Bye!
Text 10
M:Seagulls are large, noisy birds. They can appear friendly, especially to visitors who have brought a picnic! It can be amusing to watch the birds fighting over little pieces of bread or chips. However, when animals get used to being fed by humans, they will lose their fear of them and may become aggressive. Seagulls are not very dangerous, but they have been known for attacking humans, usually the people that are holding food. In some places, the seagulls even affect the business of snack shops. The usual food sources of seagulls, and all birds, are affected by climate change, so their feeding habits are changing. Seagulls have been seen eating rabbits and even other seagulls. Sometimes, they will even drink beer. Seagulls can be scared off for a moment by waving your arms or running towards them. In areas where they are very common, it might be best to walk with an umbrella. When a seagull realizes that it is being watched, it will wait 21seconds longer before approaching a bag of chips. So avoid offering seagulls any kind of human food.
