Twelve-year-old Amanda Clement raced to the ballpark across the street from her house in Hudson, South Dakota. She couldn't wait to join her brother, Hank, and the boys for a game of baseball.

Would they let her play? She could throw, run and bat as well as any of them, but they let her play only when they needed her. She would have to umpire again. At least she could be part of the game.  Amanda knew all the rules, and the boys could count on her.

Over the next few years, local teams began asking her to judge their gamestoo. One summer day in 2018Amanda and her mother traveled to Hawarden, Iowa, to watch Hank play in the championship semiprofessional game. Two local teams decided to play a game be- fore the semiprofessional teams.  Amanda agreed to be the judge. As Amanda finished the morning game, she saw two men walking toward her. To her surprise, they were the manag- ers of the semiprofessional teams and were impressed with her judge and wanted her to judge the afternoon championship game. They would even pay her.  The 16-year-old girl was about to become the first female paid to be a judge of a baseball game. Amanda was calm and confident and judged fairly.  She was right on the spot, watching closely.

Newspaper reporters said that she was absolutely fair.  Managers began to ask for her first when they needed a judge. Amanda was popular with the fans, too.  In one game, the audience weren't happy with the judge and insisted on replacing him with Amanda. Being a judge was hard work. Amanda judged for the whole game, and she worked in all kinds of weather. She said, "It isn't as easy as it looks, but for all that, there is a good deal of enjoyment in the work. You have got to have confidence in your ability or you won't do well in anything.”

Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity.

Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.

But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised(临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.

He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin(标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.

At the Olympicshe also took part in the decathlon(十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.

I think Paul Dughi said it best, “ It’s hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”

9What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?

AThe adversity Thorpe met with led to his success.

BThorpe’s success was no guarantee of a better life.

CThorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses.

DThorpe suffered many hardships despite his success.

10Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?

ATo prevent the foot from injury.

BTo make the shoe fit the foot.

CTo stop the shoe from being stolen.

    DTo show his problem-solving skills.

11What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?

ALoss of his own sports shoes.

BA casual attitude towards the event.

CLack of experience in the event.

DA shortage of talent for the event.

12Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?

    ALoyal and enthusiastic.

    BGenuine and creative.

    CTough and strong-minded.

    DSelfless and good-tempered.

    D

    Do you like spicy food?

What’s your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili-red pepper-in their dinner while others can’t get enough of it.

Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chili is related to childhood experiences, and cultural influences affect our taste buds too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported.

“We have always assumed that liking drives intake-we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect these personality traits with intake of chili peppers,”said Professor John Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.

But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty. It is, in fact, a burning sensation that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster.

In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about certain traits of their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin, the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.

By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.

Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason some people can withstand spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, it’s that you actually learn to like the burn,” Hayes explained.

13What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph?

    Adislike Bfear

    Cput up with Dadapt to

14What did Professor John Hayes and his team discover from their study?

Awhat we eat actually helps to develop our personalities

BMales are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females

CThose trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food

DPeople are wrong to treat spicy as a kind of taste rather than a feeling

15Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?

ABecause their taste buds have become less sensitive

BBecause they love the burning sensation

CBecause they want to challenge themselves

DBecause the more they try spicy food, the less it burns

16What’s the main idea of the passage?

AWhat he or she likes to eat mainly decides on his or her personality

BThat a person enjoys spicy food depends largely on the personality

CHis or her childhood experiences decide on his or her personality

DHis or her cultural background decides on his or her personality

On his way home, Jonathon saw a gray, long-haired cat sitting on the sidewalk. As he stopped to pet her, he noticed that she was not wearing a collar. She rubbed her head against his hand and began to purr (发呼噜声). She reminded Jonathon of Smoky, the cat he had when he was younger. Smoky’s fur had been long and gray too.

Jonathon petted the cat for a while. Then he said, “I have to go,” and continued home. To his surprise, the cat followed him.

When Jonathon was home, he walked up the porch steps and went in the kitchen. The cat followed him up the steps and sat quietly outside the door, watching him closely. Jonathon made a sandwich. The cat continued to stare at him. Jonathon sighed. “I know it’s not a good idea to feed a stray cat,” he said, “but you look so hungry! I can’t sit here and eat without feeding you too!”

Jonathon put some turkey on a plate for the cat. As Jonathon watched, she ate every scrap of turkey and then began to clean her face and paws. “Wow!” Jonathon said, “You must have been starving. I wonder how long it has been since someone fed you.”

Jonathon finished his sandwich and looked at the cat. Her long fur was matted (乱蓬蓬的). Jonathon remembered that Smoky’s brush and toys were stored in the garage. “I’m going to clean you up a little,” Jonathon said to the cat.

Jonathon found Smoky’s brush and got to work. As the dirt came out, the cat’s fur began to get lighter. “Hey!” Jonathon said, realizing the truth. “You’re not gray—you’re white!”

After her brushing, the cat climbed onto Jonathon’s lap and purred. “You’re so friendly, you probably belong to someone,” Jonathon said. “I bet you’re just lost.” When Jonathon’s father came home, Jonathon showed him the cat that had stretched out in a patch of sun on the porch. “Why don’t you make some signs to place in the neighborhood,” his father suggested.

    注意:

    1. 续写字数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

His father said that if no one called about the cat after a week, Jonathon could keep her.

“Okay,” Jonathon’s father finally said, “I think you’ve waited long enough.”

    47One possible version

    Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Being a Good Listener”.

As we all know that good listening can not only show respect, promote understanding, but also improve interpersonal relationship in communicating. Parents should listen more to their children, so that they can understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap. Teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their students’ needs better. Students should listen more to their classmates, and in this way they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed.

What I want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. Show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk. While talking, learn to listen to others and show that you are interested by a positive nodding or a smile. Try to be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them.

In a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other. Thank you for your listening!

    48Possible version

His father said that if no one called about the cat after a week, Jonathon could keep her. Jonathon made some signs that read “Cat Found” and hung them around his neighborhood. He could not help crossing his fingers, though. On one hand, he knew it was right to give the cat back to its owner; on the other hand, he did like the cat very much and wanted to adopt it. Jonathon fed and brushed her every day, and he and the cat became inseparable. The week crawled by and no one called to claim the cat.

“Okay,” Jonathon’s father finally said, “I think you’ve waited long enough.” “You mean I can keep the cat?” Jonathon was wild with joy. His father gave a nod and said, “Why don’t you name the cat? That will make her a member of the family.” Thinking it over and over again, Jonathon decided to call the cat Snowy because she was as white as snow. Although Snowy and Smoky were different in many ways, they had one thing in common: love and company.
