One of the greatest challenges in caring for such intelligent animals as chimpanzees(猩猩)is providing them with enriching experiences. Every day, the chimpanzees at Project Chimps receive morning and evening food-based enrichment devices, but caregivers are always looking for more ways to keep the chimps mentally engaged. With 79 chimpanzees, each with their distinctive personality, care staff often find that different chimps react differently to new enrichment.
Last year, we began inviting musicians to perform for chimps to see what they may respond. A
violin performance received quite the response. Additional musicians were lined up to visit but the coronavirus has stopped the activities, which we hope to resume in the near future.
This past week, we brought an electric piano for the chimps to investigate. Some chimps, like
twins Buttercup and Clarisse, were immediately interested and could not wait to tap out a few notes. Others, like Emma, were more interested in trying to take it apart.
29- year-old Precious has very little tolerance for the piano. She sat off to the side for a few
minutes, but eventually she decided that was enough. She called an end to the enrichment session by throwing a handful of waste at the piano. Receiving her message loud and clear, we removed the piano.
We could never have guessed how 33-year-old Luke would react to it. As with many retired lab
chimpanzees, Luke has some anxiety issues. He seems particularly distrustful of anything new, including people, food, and enrichment. But when we presented the chimps with the piano, Luke was the first to investigate. We could not believe our eyes—this usually anxious chimpanzee bravely chose to explore something new!
To us at Project Chimps, this is what it is all about: giving chimpanzees the freedom to choose.
We are honored to be part of their journey.
    高一英语 第 3页,共8页
    24. Why do chimpanzees respond differently to new enrichment?
    A. They are of different gender. B. They once lived in the wild.
    C. They are as intelligent as humans. D. They have their unique characters.
    25. What does the underlined word “resume” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Continue. B. Suspend. C. Monitor. D. Regulate.
    26. Who showed the least interest in the piano?
    A. Buttercup and Clarisse. B. Emma.
    C. Precious. D. Luke.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. How caregivers look after the retired chimpanzees.
    B. What care staff do to enrich chimpanzees' mental experiences.
    C. How chimpanzees are trained through various enrichment.
    D. A scientific research by Project Chimps to study chimps.
    C
It's time for people to pick up their boom boxes and dust off their sneakers. Breaking, or competitive break dancing, is going for the gold.
On Dec 7, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that breaking would be an
Olympic sport at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. It will be the latest modern sport to be added to the Games. IOC President Thomas Bach said that the new addition of breaking could help the Olympics event be “more youthful”. “We had a clear priority, and this was to introduce sports particularly popular among the younger generation,” Bach said. “And also to take into consideration the urbanization of sport.”
Breaking was originally part of early hip-hop culture in New York in the 1970s. In the decades
since, it has spread globally, enjoying huge popularity beyond the US and particularly across Europe and Asia. Though breaking is often categorized as a style of street dance, it more easily lends itself to the field of sports than other styles for the competitive nature.
“Back in the Bronx in New York, when it first started, it was always neighborhoods of kids just
battling each other,” 26-year-old break-dancer Victor Montalvo told USA Today. “That's how they did it back in the day.”
“Breaking competitions typically consist of one-on-one battles in which one competitor
challenges his or her rival with different moves and the other responds. It's a sport/art just as physically demanding as high-intensity dancing and acrobatics”, Montalvo added.
But as an art, breaking also features coordination and creativity. Some combinations of moves
can be practiced, but much of a round is improvised. Combining vitality and creativity, breaking is accepted by young dancers across the world who are motivated by the prospect of representing their countries at the world’s biggest sporting event.
    28. What does the underlined words “the gold” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. golden color. B. the gold medal.
    C. big wealth. D. great importance.
    29. Why does the author mention the dancing in New York in Paragraph 4 ?
    A. To show breaking is loved by neighborhoods’ kids.
    B. To explain why breaking is more like a sport.
    C. To prove breaking has a long history.
    D. To show Bronx is the birthplace of breaking.
    高一英语 第 4页,共8页
    30. What does the underlined word “improvised” mean in the last paragraph?
    A. without any preparation. B. physically challenging.
    C. popular among the youth. D. fierce and competitive.
    31. What's the purpose of the text?
    A. To stress the importance of breaking.
    B. To introduce a new Olympic event- breaking.
    C. To throw light on the rules of breaking.
    D. To make a brief historical review of breaking.
    D
For today’s interconnected food supply chains, “efficient” is what it’s supposed to be: Each country specializes in what it’s best at and puts it on the global market. Producers and processors within countries specialize, too, as a way to minimize costs. As a result, at least in theory, prices stay low, the world gets fed and everyone wins.
However, the COVID-19 crisis demonstrates what is wrong with this approach. When barriers
prevent food from reaching its markets, or demand suddenly drops — both of which are happening now — the system falls apart. Belgium, a leading exporter of potatoes, lost sales on the domestic and
overseas markets because of lockdowns(封锁). At least the Belgians can try to eat the potatoes at
home. That strategy won't work for every crop: Ghana, the world’s top cocoa exporter, lost markets when people focused on buying essential items instead of chocolate.
The loss in export income in Africa more generally could have a huge impact if the COVID-19
crisis continues, as many countries there rely heavily on imported(进口) grains. The prices of these
grains have rocketed not only because of rising demand for these grains during the crisis, but also because a few countries — including Russia and Vietnam — carried out export restrictions out of fear that sending food abroad would lead to higher prices domestically.
Seeing the spoiled products across the world should force all of us to rethink our “efficient” food
supplies. We need to rejuvenate(使恢复活力)local and regional food systems to reduce the
vulnerabilities that come with being relying too much on imported foods. This doesn’t mean cutting off all trade or abolishing all packaged foods, but it does mean building diversity, and increasing
opportunities for small and medium-scale enterprises to flourish in shorter, more sustainable(可持续
的) food supply chains that are closer to home. For governments around the world, it should be the place to start.
    32. In theory, specialization of the food system ________.
    A. adapts to changes efficiently B. balances supply and demand
    C. focuses on essential items D. reduces costs of production
    33. The underlined word “vulnerabilities” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
    A. weaknesses B. diversities C. unfairness D. prices
    34. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. A few countries restrict exports to stabilize local food prices.
    B. Grain prices rise due to Africa’s dependence on importation.
    C. Ghana might be less affected by lockdowns than Belgium was.
    D. Packaged-food consumption should be encouraged to handle the crisis.
    35. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
    高一英语 第 5页,共8页
    A. expose food export issues during the crisis
    B. encourage multi-channeled regional food supply
    C. discuss the development of a sustainable economy
    D. prove the importance of diverse government policies

China has been the birthplace of many of the world's greatest inventions. It was, for example, the first country to produce paper money. Before the invention of paper money and coins, people used many different kinds of things for buying and selling. 36. This exchange of goods and services for other goods and services is called bartering.
    37. In 1200 BC, people in China began to use shells (贝壳) as money. Usually the shells used as
money were very small. This made it easier for people to carry money over long distances, and allowed for trade to develop between different parts of the country.
In the years which followed this invention, many other countries around the world began to do the
    same. 38.
The next development was in 1000 BC, when China started making bronze and copper shells. It wasn't long before the Chinese made round coins out of metal. 39. By 500 BC, metal coins had begun to appear in countries like Persia and Greece, and later in the Roman Empire.
About 1,000 years later, leather was used as money in China, and in 806 AD, the first paper
banknotes were produced by the Chinese people. 40.
    A. People also began collecting foreign coins as souvenirs.
    B. During that time, for example, buying a chicken might cost several potatoes.
    C. It was still many years before paper currency(货币) appeared in Europe.
    D. However, as economies developed, such exchanges became impractical.
    E. They also used tiny shells as money for buying and selling.
    F. As time went by, trade between countries increased.
