The COVID-19 pandemic has been a frequent topic of conversation for most of us over the past year. As we dreamt of indoor dining, vacations, and hugging our friends again, my friend Ana texted that her mother, living in Brazil, had been infected by the coronavirus. I won’t go into details here, but the disruption to life in Brazil have been especially upsetting considering their social and cultural norms (规范).
Ana is Brazilian, and I’m from the US. While living in New York City, we became fast friends despite the few awkward cultural differences I learned to deal with. She was comfortable with intimacy; I preferred to keep my distance. She liked the company of many; I liked the friendship of few. It was awkward for me to lean in for a quick hug, only to be embraced then kissed on the cheeks. To this day, I’m not an excellent cheek kisser, but I try. She is one of many people over the years who have educated me, in a way, about delighting in cultural difference.
I called Ana to check on her mother and I was primarily curious about how social and cultural norms have been affected. It’s difficult, said Ana, because the necessary health regulations are opposite to “what we believe and everything we know about living in a community and displaying feelings of love”, but she hasn’t given up hope. I asked if the shifts made during the pandemic will change cultural norms. “Absolutely not,” said Ana. This is who Brazilians are in nature and change doesn’t happen overnight. They spend a lot of time and energy investing in relationships, and the deeply rooted social conventions won’t change quickly.
Over the years, Ana has shared many stories that emphasize the differences in our upbringing. I delight in our differences, even if kissing on the cheek makes me uncomfortable. We find our commonalities, like talking with our hands, being expressive, and valuing community. And we learn from our differences. COVID disrupted many things, but through all of this, Ana said, we must constantly be adjusting, understanding, and doing what’s best for our communities and the people we love.
24.Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 1?
A.Adjustment. B.Disturbance. C.Commitment. D.Preference.
25.What can we learn about Ann from Paragraph 2?
A.She is good at educating other people.
B.She prefers to stay alone in her own comfort zone.
C.She enjoys the close contact with others.
D.It took a long time for her to make friends with me.
26.Why doesn’t Ana think the pandemic will change social and cultural norms?
A.Because the Brazilians are born to be sociable.
B.Because the social conventions are easy to change.
C.Because the health regulations consist with her beliefs.
D.Because Brazilians rarely value investment in relationships.
27.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.My Attitude towards Friendship
B.Social and Cultural norms in the Pandemic
C.The Influence of COVID-19 on Life
D.My Acceptance of Cultural Differences

With smart technology increasingly influencing all aspects of our lives, it is only a matter of time before someone invents smart shoes—ones that can be made based on personal needs. Called “ShiftWear”, the sneakers are the brainchild of a team of businessmen, and engineers led by New York-based designer David Coelho.
The adaptable shoes can be customized by using a smart phone app. Shoe owners will have the option of selecting a design from a variety of HD patterns by famous artists or creating one themselves. The company's founders imagine marketplace where artists can not only share also sell their designs to others. Despite being electronic, the designs are clearly visible even in the brightest sunlight. What's even cooler is that by switching on backlight, users can even show off their designs in the dark!
According to Coelho, the sneakers will keep their charge forever if only images are displayed . Though they will need periodic recharging, active users have nothing to worry about. That's because he shoes are equipped with special Walk-to-Charge technology that powers the shoes with every step. Inactive users also have options of charging the sneakers without using wires.
The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevlar fiber, a kind of strong material, reducing normal wear and tear. Even better, they are completely waterproof and can even be thrown into an ordinary washing machine for a quick wash! The company predicts that the shoes will range in price from $150 to $1,000 depending on the size of the e-panels where the designs are displayed.
This is not the first time that electronics and shoes have combined. Lithuania-based iShuh Technologies has come up with a similar concept that connects e-reader panels to a smart phone app via Bluetooth. Scientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warming oceans from climate change.
Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks growing process. That meant the sharks were born earlier and very tired. The findings could be used in the study of other sharks, including those that give birth to live young.
The scientists studied 27 sharks. Some were raised in average summer water temperatures, about 27 degrees Celsius. Others were raised in higher temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius and31 degrees Celsius. They found that the sharks raised in the warmest temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures. They also showed reduced energy levels.
Epaulette sharks can grow to a length of about one meter. Their name comes from large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing.
One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanic sharks and rays dropped more than 70 percent between1970 and 2018. Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten sharks.
Carolyn Wheeler is a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia. She is the lead author of the epaulette shark study. She said that while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough survive for long in the wild.
She added that if the sharks are born smaller than usual, they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner-and they're going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings.
The study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful management is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks.
32.Why are they called epaulette sharks?
A. Because of their shape
B. B. Because of their living place
C. Because they can grow to a length of about one meter
D. Because the large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing.
33.In what aspect do the warmer conditions affect the baby sharks?
A.Their food. B.Their body weight.
C.Their living habits. D. Their moving route.
34.How did the scientists carry out their study?
A.By studying former data.
B.By tracking sharks in the wild.
C.By collecting information about climate change.
D.By comparing sharks in waters of different temperatures.
35. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.The origin of sharks names. B.The sharks’ appearance.
C.The threats to sharks’ survival. D.The sharks’ living environment.

Criticism (批评) is harmful to healthy relationships. It's okay to express disappointment if someone is behaving in a way that hurts you . 36 The following are some ways to catch criticism before it begins.
37 Before you criticize, pause and consider whether you really need to say anything at all. If someone did something to get on your nerves, would you really need to point it out? Sometimes, it's best to let small rudeness go . Take a few deep breaths and leave the room instead of criticizing.
Be realistic. Critical people often have very high expectations of those around them. Your tendency to criticize may come from expecting too much from others. Sometimes you may find yourself consistently annoyed or disappointed with others. 38
Separate the individuals from their actions. Critical people often focus on the negative aspects of a situation or a person, failing to see good qualities alongside negative ones. If you find yourself making assumptions about a person's character, stop yourself. 39 We all behave poorly sometimes, but a single action is not a reflection of the character.
Focus on positives. Oftentimes, being critical results from how you're choosing to see a situation. 40 However, the vast majority of people have good qualities that outweigh the bad ones. Try to focus on a person's positive qualities over their negative ones.
A.Never criticize others.
B.Think before you speak.
C.Everyone has drawbacks and imperfections.
D.It may be a good idea to adjust your expectations.
E.We should focus on other people's disappointing actions.

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. I fumbled(抚弄) with the string and then, unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I opened it. It was a shiny, brand-new laptop. I had scored straight As for my O-Level examination and this was my reward.I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about “chat rooms”,“instant messaging”and“e-mailing”,all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I chanced upon a social networking site. Soon I became glued to my new-found electronic friend.I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became trapped by Facebook and Twitter.I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be addicted to the glowing screen before me.Whenever I was not glued to these social networking sites, I would be going through gossip or fashion websites
As time passed, I realized that I was hooked on the Internet. During weekends, when I had more time on my hands, I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the people I made friends with on the Internet although I had never met them.Soon I was spending the small hours of the morning surfing on the Internet. Sleep was no longer complete and continuous but divided into small pieces. My grades at school also began getting from bad to worse.

It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internet.I was asked to tone down my usage of the Internet. Yet,however hard I tried, I was unable to pull myself away, unable to terminate my chat sessions and unable to concentrate on my lessons. I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my e-mail or message board.
Then one day, my father took away my laptop.I sputtered and fumed but to no avail. Dad had made up his mind. Over time I realized that Dad and Mum had always wanted the best for me. That was when I decided to take the big step-to conquer my Internet addiction. Quitting was harder than I expected. But with dogged determination I knew that I would he able to do it and promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.
提分词汇和句型 词汇;tone down 使缓和;使温和concentrate on 集中 be desperate for..极渴望…… to no avail 没有效果;不成功make up one's mind 某人下定决心realize意识到 turn over a new leaf重新开始,改过自新;重新做人

M:Welcome to the Fiddy Working Heritage Farm. This open-air museum gives you the experience of agriculture and rural life in the English countryside at the end of the nineteenth century. So you'll see a typical farm of that period, and like me, all the staff are dressed in clothes of that time.
I must give you some advice and safety tips before we go any further. As it’s a working farm, please don't frighten or injure the animals. We have a lot here, and many of them are now quite rare. And do stay at a safe distance from the tools; some of them have sharp points which can be pretty dangerous, so please don't touch them. We don't want any accidents, do we? I don’t think any of you have brought dogs with you, but in case you have, I'm afraid they’ll have to stay in the car park, unless they're guide dogs. I'm sure you’ll understand that they could cause a lot of problems on a farm. As you may know, we run skills workshops here, where you can learn traditional crafts like woodwork and basket- making. You can see examples of the work, and talk to someone about the courses. Now I mustn’t forget to tell you about picnicking. You can picnic in the field, though do clear up behind you, of course.
Well,if you’re all ready, we’ll set off on our tour of the farm.
