The next time you’re in a town or city, see if you can spot some street art. Street art is often displayed on walls or buildings and can be all sorts of things including murals (large paintings on a wall), stickers and posters. Graffiti(涂鸦) is similar but it uses words or pictures or both.
It’s important to understand that if you want to do street art in public, such as on a wall or in a park, you must have permission from whoever owns that space. You can’t just spray paint on any wall, and you must not create anything that is rude or that could upset other people.
To get involved, it’s always best to join a street art group or street art workshop. The artist helping will provide the right paints and protective equipment (masks, gloves, sheets to cover the ground), and will show you how to plan your art, how to paint on a large surface and how to make your ideas come to life.
Sophie Wheeler runs Graft, in Bristol, England. Graft holds graffiti and street art workshops. “Graffiti art is fantastic for kids,” she says. “There are no rules—you can create whatever patterns, words or characters pop into your imagination.”
If you can’t find an art group, then maybe your school art teacher can help. They could invite a street artist to visit and do a workshop. If you have a dull, blank space at school, such as a wall by a playground or a corridor, then why not suggest a mural? Besides colourful patterns, the artist often wants to create something to make people think about an issue such as climate change or perhaps to celebrate the life of a local hero.
The beauty of street art is that it doesn’t have to stay forever; it can be easily painted over, making a blank space again for new art.
4. What can we learn about graffiti from Paragraph 1?
A. It is the same as murals. B. It includes stickers and posters.
C. It only uses pictures. D. It shares something with other street art forms.
5. What does the author advise before doing street art?
A. Establishing street art workshops.
B. Selecting public places as you like.
C. Making protective equipment by yourself.
D. Considering the appropriateness of your works.
6. What do Sophie Wheeler’s words mean about graffiti?
A. It is in desperate need of rules. B. It is limited to certain patterns.
C. It encourages creativity. D. It appeals to children only.
7. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Street art often carries a message.
B. Heroes affect the life of the public greatly.
C. Street art attracts people because it lasts long.
D. Climate change is the hottest topic among street artists.

C
I started playing the piano when I was around four years old—that was 15 years ago!—and since then, the longest I haven’t touched piano keys was probably two months. This was an enormous amount of devotion to something that I wasn’t even planning to make money off of it—so there must have been something worth holding on to, right?
The easy guess is that I was always so purely in love with music and piano that I couldn’t bear to let them go. However, it’s a bit more complicated than that. I struggled a lot with piano. I felt pressure to improve, innovate, and be the best in order to prove something to others. The seed of my musical interest was grown with competition and doubt.
It’s difficult to learn to love something that you didn’t choose in the first place. But somehow, sometime, love grew. And by high school, it was strong enough that I found the strength to hold on tighter, dig further, and find something of my own to grow. In a way, I had to start over.
And so, I took a pause. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who encouraged me and helped me tunnel into what I loved, not what I was told I should learn. Anything I had was good enough to be loved.
This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted to learn on my own—this was just for me, to form a new relationship to music. Even though my guitar skills are miles lower than my piano skills, I feel I can express myself even more wholly through strings than keys. There’s just something about doing it all for myself that has helped me heal the damages to my relationship to music.
The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something you once loved—or something you never chose—remember that with dedication, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
8. What can we learn about the author’s experience from Paragraph 1?
A. He probably spent two months in playing the piano.
B. He began to play the piano when he was 15 years old.
C. He thought it necessary to start playing the piano early.
D. He committed himself to the piano not for financial factors.
9. Which of the following words best describes the author’s relationship with the piano?
A. Bittersweet. B. Harmonious. C. Painful. D. Passive.
10. What inspired the author to learn the guitar?
A. His teacher’s constant encouragement. B. His desire for a new relationship with music.
C. His interest in strings rather than keys. D. His talent for playing musical instruments.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Practice makes perfect B. Love cannot be forced
C. Love is a thing that grows D. There is no end to learning
D 9. A 10. B 11. C
根据第一段中“This was an enormous amount of devotion to something that I wasn’t even planning to make money off of it—so there must have been something worth holding on to, right? (这是对一件我甚至不打算从中赚钱的东西的巨大投入,所以一定有值得坚持的东西,对吗?)”可知,作者投身于钢琴并非出于经济原因,没打算从中赚钱。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The easy guess is that I was always so purely in love with music and piano that I couldn’t bear to let them go. However, it’s a bit more complicated than that. I struggled a lot with piano. (简单的猜测是,我对音乐和钢琴的爱一直是如此纯粹,以至于我不忍心让它们离开。然而,实际情况比这要复杂一些。我学钢琴很吃力。)”以及最后一段中“The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. (我对钢琴的爱恨情仇既是种植下的也是逐渐增长的。)”可知,作者和钢琴的关系是苦乐参半的。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted to learn on my own—this was just for me, to form a new relationship to music. (今年夏天,我开始学吉他。我有意地想要自己学习——这只是为了我自己,与音乐建立一种新的关系。)”可知,作者渴望与音乐建立一种新的关系而学习吉他。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something you once loved—or something you never chose—remember that with dedication, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. (我对钢琴的爱恨情仇既是种植下的也是逐渐增长的。如果你也学会了恨你曾经爱过的东西——或者你从未选择过的东西——记住:只要付出努力,它可以被连根拔起,而爱则可以在它的原地建立一个家。)”可知,本文中,作者通过自己学习乐器的经历说明爱是能够种植培养的。选项C“爱是一种种植的东西。”符合主题,适合做标题。故选C项。
D
The next time someone asks you to stop sharing your fun facts about rare coins, or teases you about your love for Norse mythology(北欧神话), tell them you’re working on your brain health.
According to a new study that examined memory in expert birdwatchers, having expert knowledge in a subject helps us memorize new information.
This is because, while forgetting often happens when similar memories interfere(干扰) with each other, expert knowledge provides a mental organizational structure that helps us keep new items that we want to learn distinct from each other.
“Unlike memory functions that tend to decrease with age, expert knowledge often continues to accumulate as we get older. This makes it an area of strength in older adults that we may be able to control and use to mitigate age-related memory decline and improve quality of life for this group,” says Dr. Erik Wing, a postdoctoral fellow at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute.
To study the effects of expert knowledge on memory, Dr. Wing and his team took in local bird experts from community organizations such as the Toronto Ornithological Club and Toronto Field Naturalists.
To identify how knowledge changes mental organization, participants were shown sets of bird images and asked to arrange them visually on the screen according to perceived similarity.
Most experts tended to group birds based on specific features, such as the structure of the beak(喙) or the shape of the tail, even for bird species that they had never seen before. In contrast, some of the experts based their grouping on more superficial(粗浅的) features like color.
Next, the researchers tested participants’ memory. The researchers found that those who grouped birds based on specific features performed better in the memory task than those who grouped birds based on color.
While we can’t all be birdwatching experts, we are all experts in something—whether it’s sports, the Lord of the Rings trilogy or our own family and social network. In other words, we may all be able to benefit from the memory boost that expert knowledge can provide, regardless of our age.
12. Why does having expert knowledge enable us to memorize new information better?
A. It reminds people to share hobbies.
B. It records the influence of fun facts.
C. It helps reduce confusion between new items.
D. It prevents the change of a mental structure.
13. What does the underlined word “mitigate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Confirm. B. Delay. C. Preserve. D. Follow.
14. What did Dr. Wing and his team do in their research?
A. They conducted interviews with local bird experts.
B. They carefully grouped birds based on different features.
C. They made an experiment in the Toronto Ornithological Club.
D. They compared participants’ performances in the memory task.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the possibility of getting memory boost?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Cautious.
C 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据第三段“This is because, while forgetting often happens when similar memories interfere(干扰) with each other, expert knowledge provides a mental organizational structure that helps us keep new items that we want to learn distinct from each other.(这是因为,当相似的记忆相互干扰时,往往会发生遗忘,而专业知识提供了一种心理组织结构,帮助我们将想要学习的新事物区分开来)”可知,专业知识有助于将要学习的新事物区别开,减少它们之间的混淆,因此能让我们更好地记忆新信息。
根据划线词前“This makes it an area of strength in older adults that we may be able to control(这使它成为老年人的一个优势领域)”及后面“improve quality of life for this group(提高这一群体的生活质量)”可知,专业知识是老年人的一个优势,也许能够控制和利用它来缓解与年龄有关的记忆衰退,从而提高这一群体的生活质量,所以mitigate意为“减缓”。
根据倒数第二段“Next, the researchers tested participants’ memory. The researchers found that those who grouped birds based on specific features performed better in the memory task than those who grouped birds based on color.(接下来,研究人员测试了参与者的记忆力。研究人员发现,那些根据特定特征对鸟类进行分组的人比那些根据颜色对鸟类进行分组的人在记忆任务中表现得更好)”可知,研究人员发现根据鸟类特征进行分组的人表现更好,说明Wing博士及其团队在研究中将参与者的表现进行了比较。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In other words, we may all be able to benefit from the memory boost that expert knowledge can provide, regardless of our age.(换句话说,无论年龄大小,我们都可能受益于专业知识所提供的增强记忆力的能力)”可知,作者对于提高记忆力的可能性持积极态度。故选A。
Insects have an important role as part of the living planet, and they make up four-fifths of all animal species. But what difference do they make to our lives?
Insects as a problem
____16____We plant crops which some insect species love, and they thrive on them. That’s when we start to call them pests.
Humans have caused some insect species to be moved from one part of the world to another—deliberately or by accident. If the introduced insect species has no natural enemies in their new home, they can become a real problem. A recent UK example is the Harlequin ladybird, which has found its way to Britain and eats other ladybirds.
Some insects can sting, bite, or transmit disease to humans.____17____Mosquitoes, for example, gain nourishment by sucking blood, and in the process they can transmit diseases, such as malaria.
So, when it comes to insects, its important to understand the consequences of human actions.
Insects as an opportunity
Insects are very important as pollinators(传粉者). Bees are perhaps the best example of this. ____18____Pollination is needed before many crops and fruits that we eat can be formed.
Insects are also useful as models in scientific research. The Fruit Fly is a good example. It breeds rapidly, and can produce very many generations per year in the laboratory, so it is ideal for the study of evolution.____19____
Insects can be useful to the gardener too—ladybirds, for example, are the gardeners’ friend because they eat aphids. Hoverflies and wasps also hunt and kill other insects for food in the garden. These species are called predators(捕食者).
____20____
A. Without them, many crops would fail.
B. Many insect species compete with us for food.
C. And don’t forget insects can also be eaten by man!
D. Many of these have been caused by human activities.
E. Sometimes it is joked that this is because they find us tasty.
F. Many pests can be controlled by spraying with chemical pesticides.
G. In fact, many genetic discoveries couldn’t have been made without it.
B 17. E 18. A 19. G 20. C
根据下文“We plant crops which some insect species love, and they thrive on them. That’s when we start to call them pests.”(我们种植一些昆虫喜欢的作物,它们在这些作物上茁壮成长。 Many insect species compete with us for food.(许多昆虫种类与我们争夺食物。)
上文“Some insects can sting, bite, or transmit disease to humans.”(有些昆虫会叮人、咬人或将疾病传播给人类。) 下文“Mosquitoes, for example, gain nourishment by sucking blood, and in the process they can transmit diseases, such as malaria.”(例如,蚊子通过吸血获得营养,在这个过程中它们会传播疾病,如疟疾。) Sometimes it is joked that this is because they find us tasty.(有时有人开玩笑说,这是因为他们觉得我们好吃。)
上文“Insects are very important as pollinators. Bees are perhaps the best example of this.”(昆虫是非常重要的传粉者。 下文“Pollination is needed before many crops and fruits that we eat can be formed.”(我们吃的许多作物和水果在形成之前都需要授粉。) Without them, many crops would fail.(没有它们,许多作物就会歉收。) 故选A项。
该段上文“Insects are also useful as models in scientific research. The Fruit Fly is a good example. It breeds rapidly, and can produce very many generations per year in the laboratory, so it is ideal for the study of evolution.”(昆虫在科学研究中也是有用的模型。 In fact, many genetic discoveries couldn’t have been made without it.(事实上,如果没有它,许多基因发现就无法实现。)
根据上文“Insects can be useful to the gardener too—ladybirds, for example, are the gardeners’ friend because they eat aphids. Hoverflies and wasps also hunt and kill other insects for food in the garden. These species are called predators.”(昆虫对园丁也很有用,比如瓢虫,它们是园丁的朋友,因为它们吃蚜虫。 And don’t forget insects can also be eaten by man!(别忘了昆虫也可以被人类吃掉!)

ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity. Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.
Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing, he and his dad went to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do. That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.
Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.
And then, as Alex watched, the rock started to move.
When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all. It was a large turtle crawled its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over the road.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;

To make the warning sign, Alex hurried back home and started his work with some leftover wood and paint.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Thinking fast, he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop, and the driver stuck his head out of the window with a puzzled look. Alex darted forward and pointed at the moving turtle. “I’m just trying to save it.” he explained. With an understanding smile, the driver applauded his efforts. Seeing the car pulling away, Alex was lost in deep thoughts. “Maybe I could put up a sign to warn people there were turtles crossing the road,” he said to himself.
To make the sign Alex hurried back home and found some leftover wood and paint. He hammered nails into the wood to make a flat board, after which he painted a vivid picture of a turtle in the middle and added “Slow! Turtles Crossing” at the bottom. He had completed all his work when Dad arrived home, who offered to carry the sign to the spot. Together they fixed the sign into the ground by the side of the road. With their work done, they both breathed a sigh of relief and headed home with great satisfaction.
