For more than 800 years, Ji Gong, a household monk(僧侣)in China, has continued to be deeply loved by people.

Ji Gong was born with a name Li Xiuyuan in an official’s family. When he was 18 years old, his parents died. The man then went to a Buddhist temple in Hangzhou and became a monk.

Li soon became bored with life in the temple. Against the rules of Buddhism, he ate meat and drank wine. He was also often seen walking in the streets in dirty clothes. The other monks in the temple all laughed at him.

However, Li didn’t forget the teachings of the Buddha. Whenever he met poor or sick people in the streets. he tried to help them. For this reason, people started to call him “Ji Gong” (“Ji” means “to help” and “Gong” means “an important man”).

Ji Gong gained some special powers, one of which was the ability to see into the future. In one story, he foresaw that a landslide(山体滑坡)was about to hit a nearby village. He tried to warn the villagers, but nobody would believe the drunk monk. Just then. he saw a wedding(婚礼). Ji Gong took away the bride and ran out of town. Every villager ran after him. Suddenly, rocks from the top of a nearby mountain rolled down. The village was destroyed in the blink of an eye. Thanks to Ji Gong, no one was killed in the landslide.

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s completely dark. Most of us go about our business in the daytime. We hardly ever see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much.

Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there are always some types of artwork or story about an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s book, etc. So, what is it about owls that makes them so popular?

Some bird researchers believe owls popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. Their eyes have developed into large ones, and they use such big eyes to see clearly in the dark. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical. So, owls cannot roll their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost entirely around on their necks.

Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided-the left ear is a bit higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s entire face acts like a satellite dish for sound waves. Their mouths are tiny so that they won’t get in the way.

Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as mysterious (神秘的) animals. Over the centuries, lots of myths (神话) about them have been created. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some have seen them as witches. These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made these birds become more popular.

    30. What is special about their ears?

    A. Their ears are cylindrical.

    B. Their ears are like a satellite dish.

    C. Their ears won’t get in the way.

    D. The left ear is a bit higher than the right ear.

    31. Which of the following is NOT the reason that owls become so popular?

    A. A long history. B. “Cool” looks.

    C. Unusual abilities. D. Lots of stories.

    32. What’s the passage mainly about?

    A. It tells us some information about owls’ look.

    B. It tells us some myths about owls.

    C. It tells us why owls are so popular.

    D. It tell us the special abilities of owls.

    33. Where can we find this article?

    A. In a travel guide. B. In a news report.

    C. In a fashion magazine. D. In an encyclopedia about animals.

    (C)

Man still has a lot to learn about the most powerful and complex (复杂的) part of his bodythe brain.

It may be surprising to learn that it isn’t age that makes you lose your memory. The reason could be that you have a “lazy” memory. Like your body, your memory becomes better exercise. Once given plenty of exercise, the brain keeps its power.

Some recent research suggests that we remember everything that happens to us. But most forgetting takes place immediately after learning. For example, an hour after learning something new, more than 50% has been forgotten. After a month, 80% has been forgotten, and so on. This research is very important. It shows if you review new materiel you have learnt, you remember much more. So it’s of the greatest importance to review newly learned material often, and have breaks often. You’d best remember what you learn at the beginning of a learning period and at the point where you stop. After the break, review what was learned before the break and then continue learning the new material. These breaks should happen every 20 or 45 minutes.

Other experiments have shown the brain needs break to take in knowledge. The time necessary for this is 5 lo 10 minutes. After the break, the memory will have taken in what it has just learned, and more will be remembered.

So when you are studying alone, make a plan which shows when to have breaks and to review newly learned material immediately before you begin studying again. If you do in this way, your memory will be better.

    34. What may make you lose your memory according to the passage?

    A. Getting too old. B. Hardly using your brain.

    C. Working too hard. D. Using your brain too much.

35 How does the writer explain his idea in Paragraph 3?

    A. By telling stories. B. By comparing facts.

    C. By expressing feelings. D. By giving examples.

    36. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. The break. B. The material. C. The brain. D. The experiment.

    37. How can you make your brain more powerful?

    A.  B.

    C.  D.

    (D)
