Studies have shown that employees who view their work as a calling tend to do better on subjective measures, such as work and life satisfaction, than those for whom a job is mainly a means to a paycheck. New research finds gains in objective aspects too.
The researchers began by analyzing data from the Wisconsin Study, which collected information on thousands of high school graduates over many years. Those who described their work as a calling in 2004 earned more than others that year, and the pattern held when participants were surveyed again in 2011.
To test causality (因果关系), the researchers created three videos in which Sam spoke of his work as being a
calling or a job or indicated no particular orientation (目标). Participants were asked to watch one of the videos before telling what bonus and raise Sam should receive and whether he should be promoted. Those who observed the calling-oriented Sam were far more likely to award a larger bonus. They gave him higher rises than to the job-oriented or the neutral (中立的) Sam, and they were more likely to recommend him for promotion.
Analysis showed that the high rewards resulted from assumptions that the Sam who saw his job as a calling was a better performer and was more committed to the organization—even though the videos described the same level of performance and showed no information about commitment.
“Calling-oriented employees are more likely to achieve career success, not necessarily because they show better job performance, but because they are expected by managers to have better performance and stronger commitment,” the researchers write. “Managers might expect calling-oriented employees to remain positive in the face of difficulties and might be more willing to accept their suggestions than those made by employees who are not calling-oriented, even when their suggestions contain similar parts.”
4 A calling-oriented employee is one who ________.
A. works to make a living B. considers work as his duty
C. has no clear aim for work D. finds happiness only in work
5. What can we learn from paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Participants were all high school students.
B. Three videos were shown to each participant.
C. More than one method was used in the research.
D. A survey was done every year from 2004 to 2011.
6. Who is Sam according to the text?
A. A participant of the research. B. A real person applying for a job.
C. A researcher analyzing data. D. A created employee for the research.
7. Why is a calling-oriented person more likely to be promoted?
A. He is more committed. B. He gives a better performance.
C. He is assumed to be better. D. He easily accepts suggestions.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. C

Cleary was working as a librarian in Washington, when a little boy marched up and asked, “Where are the books
about kids like us?” Cleary realized she had had the same thought as a girl. There had been plenty of books about kids but none that appealed to common neighborhood kids. So she set out to fill that gap. The hero of her first book Henry Huggins was an adventurous third-grader with hair “like a scrubbing brush” and a skinny dog named Ribsy.
Cleary was born on her family’s farm. When she was 6, they moved to Portland. Though Portland would become the sting for many of her books, she struggled to adapt to city life. Cleary was a slow reader at first, but in third grade she was going through a children’s novel when she “discovered I was reading,” Cleary said, “and enjoying it” Cleary found both comedy and drama in the smaller incidents of life, but she did not avoid serious themes. In 1977’s Ramona and Her Father, Ramona tries to persuade her dad to quit smoking—hanging a sign at home reading “NO SMOKING”. To attract her own young son to read, Cleary created a new character for 1965’s The Mouse and the Motorcycle—Ralph S. Mouse, a creature who makes friends with a human boy.
For 30 years Cleary answered her fan mails herself. Dear Mr. Henshaw was inspired by two letters asking her to write a book about a boy whose parents are divorced. The novel, constructed as a series of letters between a lonely sixth-grader and his favorite writer, won the Newbery Medal, the top prize for children’s literature. Whatever she wrote, Cleary was always guided by the child she had once been. “That little girl,” she said, “prevents me from writing down to children and from writing an adult recollection (回忆) about childhood instead of a book to be enjoyed by children.”
8. Why did Cleary decide to write books for ordinary kids?
A. A little boy asked her to do so.
B. It was her dream as a little girl.
C. Ordinary kids couldn’t afford books.
D. Books then didn’t attract ordinary kids.
9. What can we know about Cleary from paragraph2?
A. Many of her books were set in Portland.
B. She adapted to city life very soon.
C. She disliked reading at the fourth grade.
D. Her books were mainly comedies.
10. Which novel won the top prize for children’s literature?
A. Henry Huggins. B. Ramona and Her Father.
C. Dear Mr. Henshaw. D. The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
11. Who does the underlined “that little girl” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. One of her fans. B. The young Cleary.
C. A lonely six-grader. D. The character Ramona.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B
【解析】

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Though Portland would become the sting for many of her books, she struggled to adapt to city life. (尽管波兰成为她的许多书的痛点,但是她要挣扎着去适应城市生活)”可知,她的许多书是以波兰为背景的。故选A。

根据第一段“Cleary realized she had had the same thought as a girl.( Cleary认识到她是小女孩时也有和这个小男孩同样的想法)”以及最后一段“Whatever she wrote, Cleary was always guided by the child she had once been(无论她写什么,Cleary总是被曾经的小女孩自己引导)”可知,“that little girl”指小时候的自己。故选B。

Feelings are the emotional and physical responses to what we think about and how we react to daily events. Feelings are natural—we can’t stop them from happening. Because we are all different, we respond to feelings in various ways, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively. But if we are aware of our feelings, we can learn to respect ourselves and others.
There are many misunderstandings about feeling. For example “Feelings, that womanish stuff.” Recognizing
that feeling are real and natural for everyone is important Some of us may never agree that feelings are a part of living. It may be difficult for some of us to talk about our feelings. Learning about personal feelings is important in building self-awareness and relationships with others. Most mentally healthy individuals learn to accept feelings, both good and bad.
“Feelings don’t exist, or they are dangerous. So no one should talk about them.” Refusing to admit feelings can damage relationships. It can also build up emotions to the point when negative behaviors break out, for example, when an angry person hits the table. Not being able to talk to those we respect about our feelings may cause an emotional “shut down”. Talking about personal feelings with your family may help. But if it doesn’t, you may need to talk about your feelings with someone else.
Instead of denying (否认) feelings, it is healthier to talk about them. One of the most important things you can do to create respect in a family is never to deny someone’s feelings. Try to spend time each day, perhaps at the dinner table or in a private chat, talking about feelings. Teach your children by example, like “I feel afraid that you will be sleepy tomorrow if you don’t go to bed soon.” Learn to be a good listener and show understanding.
12. What is the feature of feelings?
A. They happen naturally. B. They are negative.
C. They exist in women. D. They are dangerous.
13. What is the author’s attitude toward talking about feelings?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative.
C. Favorable. D. Indifferent.
14. Why does the author mention “an angry person hit the table” in Paragraph 3?
A. To tell a story. B. To explain an idea.
C. To show a fact. D. To give a definition.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Ways of sharing feelings in a family.
B. Effects of denying someone’s feelings.
C. Reasons for having respect in a family.
D. Importance of teaching kids about feelings.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. A

How to preserve the lockdown’s slower pace
The last 15 months of pandemic forced a slowdown in families’ often-crazed pace. Sports and after-school activities all disappeared in 2020. Now, communities reopen and calendars again fill with summer plans. ____16____ In a recent research, 31 percent of families said that they plan to take part in fewer after-school activities. Then came a question. “If people are like snowflakes, unique and special, how could they get along?”
Dad sat there for a moment, thinking. “Choice,” he said. “One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the gift of choice. Different as we all are, we have one thing in common. We can choose what we do, how we dress, where we live, and how we treat each other.”
“But some people don’t get along. So their choice is a bad thing?” the boy asked.
“Oh, no. Only when they choose the wrong things.”
“How do we know what’s right and what’s wrong?”
Without a word, Dad began to work with the snow. First he made several snowballs. And then he placed three of them on top of each other.
“It’s a snowman!” the boy shouted with excitement “Those that made the snowman did the right thing.”
“Yes, these three came together and joined in an effort to build up mankind,” Dad said.
Then he held his boy tightly and said, “I pray to God that your world will learn to work and live together.”
