Earlier this month,British supermarket chain Morrisons announced that it would be removing“use by”dates on most of its milk. The idea behind this is to discourage people from throwing milk away based on a date, rather than sniffing(闻) and looking at it to determine whether it's still safe for consumption.
The fact is that significant amounts of food get wasted every year by people blindly following expiration dates, rather than their senses. What makes matters worse is that most dates don’t mean much, anyway. They're assigned somewhat randomly by food manufacturers that are not held to any regulatory standards for what determines a safe date nor what expertise(专门知识)is required to make such a judgment call—so it doesn't make sense that they'd be too cautious.
What I find amusing, however,is that Many people seem to be horrified by this approaching absence of“use by”dates.
In fact,I never look at expiration dates when I shop. To me,it's as if they don't exist. To be clear,I am not an absent-minded shopper. I pay close attention to both packaging and price. Despite having a full cart at checkout,I could tell you the exact price of every item in it. Any time I see a clearance rack(清仓货架)at the store, that's usually where I go first because it's exactly the stuff I want to buy—the cheaper, the better! If there’s any heavily discounted product that I'd normally use, I will certainly take it. Often,I'll mentally adjust my weekly menu plan on the spot, based on what I find.
The handful of times I have looked at expiration dates have been for short-lived items like prepackaged salad greens. What I've found, however, is that the dates mean little.Even a package that claims to be fresh can still have rotten yellow leaves at the bottom, which turns me off. Therefore, the expiration date means next to nothing, but my visual assessment, combined with my intention for when I plan to eat it,is far more useful.
Food is your friend. Food is not out to kill you!
24.Why will Morrison remove“use by”dates on most of its milk
    A. To be cautious about food quality. B. To improve customers' senses.
C.To meet the regulatory standards. D.To reduce food waste.
25.What do we know about the author's shopping habit from the text?
A.She shows little interest in packaging.
    B. She always avoids buying discounted products.
C.She cares more about the price.
D.She is often careless about choosing goods.
26.Why does the author give the example of“prepackaged salad greens”?
A.To claim her favorite food.B. To introduce her cooking habit.
C.To show the poor packaging of some food. D. To stress the uselessness of expiration dates. 27.What is the best title for the text
A.What Makes Us Waste More Food B.Why I Ignore Food Expiration Dates
    C.How I Choose Food for Cooking D.Why We Need “Use By”Dates C

The beautiful island country of Madagascar has a serious school shortage. About a third of Malagasy children have no access to education because the schools are too far away or severely overcrowded. Thinking Huts, a non- profit dedicated to increasing global access to education, plans to tackle the issue with a series of 3D-printed schools, the first of which was completed in April 2022.
The 765-square-feet structure, named Bougainvillea, will house 30 students. The construction began with the printer pouring a cement-like(水泥状)mixture in a pattern to create the walls. The entire process took just 18 hours! The roof, doors and windows were locally sourced, and the walls were made of a cement mixture that can resist big environmental pressures in the area. Bougainvillea was 3D printed by 14 Trees,a company with experience printing buildings throughout Kenya and Malawi.
Maggie Grouts, the 22-year-old founder of Thinking Huts,is a senior at the University of Colorado and was just 15 when she started Thinking Huts. Adopted from a rural village in China when she was 18 months old,Grout realized that not all kids were as fortunate as her and wanted to help. The idea for the 3D-printed schools came to her after brainstorming with her father on ways to use the technology for the greater good.
The 3D printing approach shrinks the construction turnaround time from months to days,as well as the cost. This allow more schools to be built in less time and reduces the building’s carbon footprints. And these savings in time, cost and materials meet a real need for education infrastructure(基础设施)to help bridge the global opportunity gap.
“Thinking Huts hopes to have a Thinking Hut in every community where children do not have a place for education and is fundraising to develop this goal. By using 3D printing,we are combining the potential of technology with architectural solutions that tackle real problems the world faces within education," says Grouts.
    28. What are 3D-printed schools intended for
    A.Reducing construction wastes.
B.Helping deal with a shortage of schools.
C.Providing high-quality education for local students.
D.Drawing public attention to 3D-printing technology.
29.What do we know about Bougainvillea
A.It can hold more students than traditional schools.
B.It is built with the help of the local government.
C.It features strong resistance to bad weather.
D.It has a complex architectural structure.
30.What can we infer about Maggie Grouts from the text?
    A. She raised money for kids from rural areas in China.
    B. She is devoted to designing 3D-printed products.bot
C.She had no access to school as a child.
    D. She is truly creative and warmhearted
31.What does the author mainly want too tell us in paragraph 4?t
    A. The advantages of 3D-printed schols.
B.The wide popularity of 3D-printing technology.
C.The significance of narrowing the global opportunity gap.
    D. The impact of 3D-printed buildings on the environment.

Have you ever taken a look at a few lovely chickens and desired to touch and kiss them Apparently, for some people the urge is hard to resist. However, according to an updated warning by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC),doing so could spread dangerous maybe even life-threatening—Salmonella. So,no matter how irresistible those little feathered birds may seem, avoid giving them a kiss.
This isn't the first time CDC has warned against physically touching or kissing your poultry(家禽).Back in 2018 Halloween, they advised against dressing the birds up for fear of spreading Salmonella. Then again, in May this year, with 474 cases reported, another warning was issued. According to interviews with 271 of those infected,77 percent had been in contact with poultry before getting sick.
“Backyard poultry, like chickens and ducks, can carry Salmonella bacteria even if they look healthy and clean,” writes CIDC. These bacteria can easily spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live. You can get sick from touching your poultry or anything in their environment and food, and then touching your mouth or swallowing the Salmonella bacteria.
Most people who come into contact with Salmonella bacteria will experience diarrhea(腹泻),fever, and stomach cramps. Children are particularly affected—one in three sick people are below the age of five, which is intelligible given their weaker immune systems and natural love for the birds.
CDC recommends that parents shouldn't let little children touch chicks, ducks, or other backyard poultry and make sure that if they do,they should wash their hands thoroughly afterward. Likewise, adults are instructed to do the same after touching backyard poultry and their eggs should be cleaned, stored, and cooked correctly to avoid the infection of Salmonella.
This might be easier said than done—for many people, backyard poultry are beloved—but if you really love them, stop physical displays of affection in case you end up with the Salmonella bacteria on your face. It turns out to be a bit of harm.
32.Why does CDC repeatedly warn people not to kiss chickens?
A.To protect the poultry. B. To show love for chickens.
C.To stay safe from the potential danger. D.To get rid of Salmonella.
33.How is paragraph 2 mainly developed?
    A. By showing statistics. B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons. D.By interviewing victims.
    34. What does the underlined word“intelligible" probably mean in paragraph 4?
    A.Controversial. B.Irresistible.
    C.Unavoidable. D. Understandable.
    35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
    A. Stress the importance of affection. B. Add more background information.
    C. Summarize the theme of the passage. D.Provide some suggestions for the readers.

I was moving as fast as I could, stepping cautiously from rock to rock along the uneven jetty(栈桥).Far ahead,I could seethe back of my brother's sandy hair and the bright orange of his shorts.
“Too slow, sister!”I heard Sam yell as he hopped with ease.
“I’ll show him,”I thought, and attempted a double jump. What a mistake! My left foot came down hard between the edges of two gray rocks, hurting my ankle.”“Ouch!”I yelled. I tried to wiggle my foot out, but my shoe was stuck. I bent closer to the rock and that’s when I saw it: a shiny, square shaped stone the color of water, attached to a glittery gold chain. It was just lying there on the wet sand, and a few seconds later it was in my pocket.
Sam squinted(眯眼看)in the sun.Could he tell I was hiding the most perfect discovery of the summer? I kept turning the treasure around in my pocket, pushing each corner of the square stone into my finger. I was dizzy, but I didn't want Sam to notice. He liked to tell everybody my business.
“Ryan saved the mini cola bottle from the carnival! It happened to be perfect for sand art
"Ryan wasted her allowance on salt and pepper shakers from the yard sale!”They were antique little pig and cost only 50 cents.
My family called me their“little collector”.Some mean kids at school called me “trash girl”.
Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Through the window of the candy shop,I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window's glass read LOST:Gold and blue necklace. Very special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster:The necklace looked different from the one I put in my pocket,I decided. Once home, I placed the necklace in my special spot for special things, lost in thought. So far, there were a variety of things like mini cola bottles and shakers. I stared at the stone, so clean and polished. Could it be Chrissy's? Was it a very special necklace? Should I return it to her? I paced back and forth in the room anxiously, not knowing what to do. Having struggled for a long time, I finally decided to call the number on the poster and get in touch with Chrissy. I told her that I might have something that belonged to her and made an appointment with her.
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting across from Chrissy in the candy shop. We were drinking milkshakes and sharing an order of sweet potato fries. Looking at the blue stone in her hand with her tearful eyes, she told me that the necklace was a gift from her mom before she got sick and she was grateful to me for returning the necklace to her. “Holding onto it somehow makes things a little better." she said. I couldn't agree more with her. It dawned on me that I became "a treasure girl" instead of “a trash girl" called by the mean kids at school.

    Text 1
M: You look happy, Alice. Any good news?
W: Caroline has come back from Boston!
M: Really?! Shall we go and see her right now?
    W: That’s what I’m here for. (1)
    Text 2
W: What did Jim suggest at the meeting?
M: He thought the company should have a full-time lawyer. (2)
W: I doubt we have the money for that.
    Text 3
M: If you are going mountain climbing this weekend, be prepared for some difficult conditions. The weather report says it will be windy.
W: I know, Dad. (3) Bob and I will be very careful. We won’t do anything dangerous.
    Text 4
W: I would like to study fashion design, but I can’t afford it right now.
M: I suppose you are talking about a full-time course. But you can take evening classes after work. (4)
    W: Good idea.
    Text 5
W: I heard that you used to be in the construction business.
M: Yes, I spent 33 years on the job. I’ve been running an online clothes shop since last year. (5)
W: Wow. Sounds like you’ll never stop working.
    Text 6 (第7题为推断题)
    W: Oh no! I don’t have Amanda’s phone number.
    M: What’s wrong, Miyako? (6)
W: Amanda said we should get together again, and that I should call her. But I don’t have her phone number. (6)
M: I see. Well, don’t worry about it. For Americans, that’s usually a friendly way to say goodbye. It’s like when Americans say, “Hello. How are you?” But they don’t want you to tell them how you are. It’s just a friendly greeting.
W: So, saying, “Let’s get together sometime” is similar to that?
    M: Yeah, that’s right.
    Text 7
M: Maria, (8) (9) (10) what do you want to see in London tomorrow?
W: I’d like to go to the zoo tomorrow morning. And then I’ll go to the British Museum in the afternoon.
M: Well, you know, there’s a lot to see in the museum.
W: Oh, yes indeed. After that, I’d like to go to the Tower of London. (8)
M: But I don’t think you have enough time. Probably you can go there the day after tomorrow. (8)
W: Okay then. (8) I just wanted to make the most of my stay in Britain. I’ll stay in London for three days, and I’ll go to Oxford to see a friend. That’ll take me two days. (9) I’ll also go to Manchester and stay there for one day. That’s what I planned.
M: Your sister is studying in Edinburgh, right? (10)
W: Yes. That’s why I’ll stay there most of my days. (10)
    Text 8 (第13题为总结题)
M: The doctor just told me I have to be careful about things I eat.
    W: Like what?
M: Well, for example, he told me to eat fish. No more hamburgers or fried chicken.
W: Yuck. I hardly eat fish. I don’t like it at all. (11)
M: I don’t either. He wants me to eat a lot of vegetables too, especially green ones. But that’s okay. I like them.
W: Oh, vegetables. I often have carrots and tomatoes. They are my favorite.
M: He also told me not to drink any coffee. That’s difficult. (12) I love my coffee in the morning.
W: I know what you mean. I do too. But I drink too much, six or eight cups a day. Coffee with cake or pie after a good meal is…
M: Cake or pie! The doctor said no to them too.
W: I almost always have them in my house. You know, I don’t think I’d like your doctor very much.
    Text 9 (第14题为推断题)
    W: Marc, (17) come on in. (15)
M: Hi Betty. (15) Haven’t seen you for ages! How are you?
W: Fine. It has been ten years since we graduated, and you haven’t changed much. Did you have any trouble getting here?
M: No trouble at all. After checking in at the hotel by the train station, I followed the directions you texted me over the mobile phone.
W: I’m glad you came over to see me and Jack.
M: I miss both of you very much. How’s Jack? Where is he? (16)
W: He’s out shopping for our dinner tonight, (16) and will be back in a minute.
M: Thank you for having me here at your home. (15)
W: What do you feel like doing while you’re here? (17)
M: Well, I’d like to look at the historic buildings.
W: No problem. We can show you around the old town, (17) you know, Benjamin Franklin and the Liberty Bell and some very good museums.
    M: That’s great. (17)
W: By the way, the International House is running a really fine film program. Would you like to see it?
M: Well, I’m just here for two days. I’m afraid I don’t have time for films.
    Text 10 (第20题为推断题)
W: Hi everyone. As we’re waiting here, let me introduce Castle Howard to you. Castle Howard has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years. Though its name contains the word “castle”, it is not a true castle because it was never used for defense. Castle Howard is actually an English country house. It has been home to the Howard family for more than 300 years. (18) Over the years, a number of films have been shot there. When you visit it tomorrow, you’ll see many things. Perhaps there’s too much to see. But make sure you don’t miss these two things. First, the Walled Gardens. (19) It is a group of three gardens. You can find 2000 different types of roses there, almost all types of roses in England. (19) The Walled Gardens is open every day of the year, except Christmas. Second, the Woodland Garden. It is known for flowering plants, fruit trees, and pathways through a wooded setting. In a word, Castle Howard is really beautiful. You could spend a whole day enjoying its beauty tomorrow.
