1  Listen and choose the correct answer.

Step 3  Language points

1.   I have a problem with my best friend.我和我最好的朋友之间有麻烦。

have a problem with意为“和……之间有问题/麻烦；与……之间产生了矛盾”。

Tony said that he had a problem with his brother.

托尼说他与他的弟弟产生了矛盾。

2. We got separated when we went to different schools last term, but we stayed in touch.上学期我们去了不同的学校，我们分开了，但我们保持着联系。

(1) get separated意为“分开”，是终止性动词短语，不能与一段时间连用。

  be separated意为“分开”，表示状态，可以与一段时间连用。

  They got separated two weeks ago.他们两周之前分开了。

  They have been separated since two weeks ago.

他们自从两周之前就分开了。

(2)  stay in touch意为“保持联系”，相当于keep in touch，其后可接with sb. 表

示“与某人保持联系”。

  I stayed in touch with my old friends. 我与我的老朋友保持着联系。

3. So could you explain what happened then? 

那么你能解释一下后来发生了什么事吗？　

  explain动词，意为“解释，说明”。

  explain sth. to sb.意为“向某人解释某事”。

  Can you explain to me how this happened?

  你能给我解释一下这是怎么发生的吗？

4. Could I ask if you’ve mentioned this to her?

我可以问一下你是否向她提及过此事吗？

(1)  Could I …?是一个礼貌请求的句型，could是情态动词，并非表示过去，

相当于Can I …?句型。回答时不能用could，而用can。

　—Could I sit here?我可以坐在这儿吗？

　—Yes, of course. / Sorry, I am afraid you can’t.

  是的，当然可以。/对不起，恐怕不行。

(2)mention sth. to sb. 意为“向某人提及某事”。

  I mentioned this idea to my mum, but she didn’t agree.

  我把这个想法跟妈妈提起过，但是她不同意。

5. Yes, but she refused to listen.是的，但是她拒绝听。

   refuse动词，意为“拒绝”，refuse to do sth.意为“拒绝做某事”，动词不定式短语作宾语。

   She refused to answer our question.她拒绝回答我们的问题。

   【拓展】常接动词不定式（短语）作宾语的动词有：

want, refuse, forget, remember, need, try, learn, hope, decide, begin, start, promise等。

6. Try to find out whether she feels lonely without you.

尽量搞清楚没有你她是否感到孤独。　

辨析：lonely与alone

Mr Wu felt lonely because he lived alone.

吴先生感到很孤独，因为他独自一人生活。

My uncle went to Hong Kong alone. 我叔叔独自一人去了香港。

7. I’m sure she regrets hurting you.我相信她后悔伤害了你。

  regret 动词，意为“懊悔；遗憾”。

　regret doing sth. 后悔做了某事（已做）

　regret to do sth. 对要做的事感到遗憾或抱歉(未做)

　I now regret selling the old house.

　我现在后悔把老房子卖了。

　I regret to tell you that you are late again.

  我遗憾地告诉你，你又迟到了。

8. So be patient with her and explain to her that she can make friends with your other friends too.所以对她要有耐心，向她解释她也能与你的其他朋友交朋友。

 (1) be patient with意为“对……有耐心”。

　Miss Gao was always patient with her students.

　高老师对她的学生总是很有耐心。

 (2)make friends (with sb.)意为“(与某人)交朋友”。friend必须用复数形式。

  We made friends with the American students.

  我们与美国学生交朋友。

9. I’ll encourage her to join in more.我将鼓励她多加入到我们中来。

(1)encourage动词，意为“鼓励，激励”。encourage sb. to do sth. 意为“鼓励某人做某事”。

   My English teacher always encourages us to speak English aloud in class.

   我们的英语老师总是鼓励我们在课堂上大声说英语。

(2)join in 意为“加入；参加”，指参加到某项活动中去。

   Would you like to join in the training? 你想来参加培训吗？

   Look, they are dancing. Let’s join in. 看，他们在跳舞。我们加入吧。

Step 4  Pronunciation and speaking

Listen and underline the words the speaker stresses.

4. Maybe she doesn’t feel very sure of herself in her new school.

Work in pairs. Talk about your problems with friendship.

Student A: You call the helpline to ask for advice on your problems:

I’m shy and I haven’t had many friends.

 I had a big fight with my best friend and we don’t talk to each other now.

 I have to go to a new school, but I don’t want to leave my friends.

Student B: You work on the helpline. Listen to Student A’s problems and try to help.
