In Octber 1964,China explded its first atmic bmb,marking a successful start f the“tw bmbs,ne satellite”prject,in which mre than 17,000 scientists and researchers participated. Of thse,23 were awarded fr their extrardinary cntributins. One f the 23 scientists was Deng Jiaxian,wh was amng the funders f China’s nuclear prgramme. After cming back frm the US,Deng devted himself whle-heartedly t the develpment f the “tw bmbs”. Spending years apart frm his family and enduring the extremecnditins f the Gbi desert,he refused t back dwn frm his respnsibilitiesand kept n cnducting scientific research.
After the successful develpment f the atmic bmb,he wrked clsely with Yu Min,anther leading scientist at the cutting edge f nuclear technlgy. Tgether,they thught utside the bx and brke new grund,leading t the breakthrugh f the hydrgen bmb. This was a remarkable achievement by the Chinese team f scientists,in such a shrt space f time. Anther respected scientist amng the 23 award-winners was Qian Xuesen,wh was experienced in rcketry and highly accmplished in his field. He had been wrking in the United States,where his crack hand at jet prpulsin had wn him acclaim . Hwever,he sught n fame and shunned the sptlight,returning t China with great reslutin. He played a key rle in China’s missile and aviatin prgrammes,helping fast-track the develpment by decades.
