Last Friday, the British organization PDSA gave out its gold medal for bravery—to a rat named Magawa. Magawa, and other rats like him,are saving countless lives by sniffing out mines(地雷)that have remained
hidden for years.
How can rats discover the mines left underground? They have strong sense of smell. From an early age
these rats were trained to discover landmines. The training takes about a year.
Magawa is an African rat which is a little bigger than common rats.He and several other rats are part of the“Hero Rat”program run by a group called APOPO.Because the rats are so light, there's little danger that
they will accidentally set off a mine.
Magawa is taken out to a minefield, which he carefully walks over.Magawa's main trainer,Malen, leads him carefully across the field. When Magawa finds a mine,he scratches(抓挠)at the dirt above it,showing
that he's found something.
Malen says that Magawa is very confident in the field. He works quickly and is easily able to make
decisions about whether something is a danger or not.“But,”Malen adds,“he is also the first one to sleep

do,and makes sure that the rats are very well treated.

Most little girls love dolls. When 17-year-old Ariella Pacheco was growing up,she was no exception. Since kids often love dolls that look like themselves best, the doll that American Girl Pacheco chose for herself
looked really like herself.
Children find comfort and connection from dolls that show their own physical feature. However, children whose medical conditions make them look different from common people have little or no hope of finding their
likeness at a toy store or even online.
Knowing how important making that very personal connection could be for a child gave Pacheco an idea. After hearing of doll designer Amy Jandrisevits'“A Doll Like Me”project that makes dolls for disabled children,
Pacheco decided she would design and make special dolls for children with special medical conditions.
To find the kids she hoped to create special dolls for,Pacheco got in touch with Fresh Start Surgical Gifts in California,a children hospital which provides medical treatment to children who need it for free. Then
Pacheco was sent pictures and information for a number of disabled girls. She finally chose four.
Michelle Pius,Fresh Start's doctor was“blown away”by the final product.“It was a very kind and big-
hearted action to make dolls that will help a child feel like they're not alone,”she said.
Before getting started,Pacheco searched YouTube for doll-making classes, and read up on the girls’ favorite hobby and preferred color. Her goal was to make sure the kids could see themselves in the dolls, but
she didn't want the things that make them different from other children to be the dolls' main feature.
“Each of these kids is so special...I hope through these dolls they can see themselves in a new light and
really love themselves,”Pacheco said.
28. What kind of dolls will children love best according to the text? ( ) A. The really special dolls. B. The most beautiful dolls.

We all have the best of intentions when we hear about a new book.Maybe we saw an author being interviewed on TV,or a colleague recommended a thrilling spy novel. We'll go out and buy the book hoping to finish it in one or two sittings .Psychologists call this the“planning fallacy(谬误)” .After we begin a new
task, high hopes don't always turn into reality.
There's new research about the books we most often try to read but secretly give up on. One was “Thinking,Fast and Slow”,by Daniel Kahneman, who began his career by helping setting up the psychology department at Hebrew University. He became a name nearly everyone knew when he won the Nobel Prize in
2002. Then in 2011 Thinking,Fast and Slow came out.It soon became a hit.
Everyone was reading it,and I figured . So I bought a copy. When the 500-page book arrived,I was still in the middle of another book. But not to worry.I placed it on my nightstand with every intention of starting it shortly. But then I heard about another book, and then another, and slowly the nightstand became more crowded. Eventually, gravity moved the heavy“Thinking,Fast and Slow”to the bottom of the pile. Several months later it found its way to a high-up shelf that I couldn't even reach unless I'm
standing on top of a chair.
Now,seven years later, I regret to inform you that I have yet to read“Thinking,Fast and Slow” .I read a lot. So why can't I read his actual book?I'm not sure. But I'm going to make a renewed effort now that I've come clean.I will read“Thinking,Fast and Slow”sometime in the next few months.Planning fallacy is
damned(可恶的)!
Sigh. Maybe he should have called the book“Reading,Fast and Slow” .
32. What does the underlined word“this”in Paragraph 1 refer to? ( ) A. An author being interviewed on TV. B. A colleague's suggestion of a novel.
C. The habit of picking up a book to read. D.The idea to finish a book in a short time.
33. What made Daniel Kahneman known to nearly everyone? ( ) A. His winning the Nobel Prize.
B. President Obama's recognization.
C. His helping at Hebrew University.
D. The publication of the book Thinking,Fast and Slow.
34. How did the author feel when the book he bought arrived? ( ) A.Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Regretful. D.Satisfied.
35.What can be the besl title for the text? ( )
A. Planning Fallacy B. Daniel Kahneman
C. Thinhing,Fast and Slow D. Reading,Fast and Slow

People can be affected with salmonella bacteria when they put their hands or equipment that has been in contact with chickens,in or around their mouths.Children younger than 5 years old are more likely to get
sick. That is because they are more likely to put their fingers and other objects into their mouths.
38 Harmful bacteria on your hands can spread easily to other people or surfaces. That's why it's important to wash hands immediately with soap and water after touching chickens or anything in the area where
they live.To reduce the risk of salmonella poisoning from live chickens, you should do the following:
●Don't bring live chickens inside your house.
