Unit 7Art Writing workshopPart 1—Lead inLet’s enjoy two emails first.Hi,How are you? I’m having a wonderful time here and wish that the holiday will go on forever. Guess where I am at the moment! Well, I’ve found an internet Cafe just round the corner from our hostel and I grabbed the opportunity to email you and tell you how I’ve been spending my time here in London.I’ve been ever so busy the few days I’ve been here trying to visit all the ineresting places. On Monday I visited Madame Tussaud’s. This is a waxwork museum. There was such a long queue to enter. Luckily our leader had booked the tickets beforehand. It was so wonderful seeing all those was figures of so many famous people!....I hope you’ll have the opportunity to visit London some day. It’s such an exciting place to be! I’m having so much fun!Time’s up! Say hi to all the others.See you soon.DebbieDear Mr Muscat,I am writing in connection with your advertisement for a temporary secretary.I am 16 years old and I have just completed my secondary education. I have seven SEC level passes including Maths, Maltese and English and I also have my ECDL licence. I am very skilled at using computers and I regularly use Word to write documents, and Outlook to send emails. Moreover, I know how to make use of spellcheckers and the thessaurus to improve my writing. During my years in secondary school I always did quite well and received good reports from my teachers. Attached please find a scanned copy of my school leaving certificate. I am tidy and organized in my work and as a student, my notes were always properly filed and my homework and schoolwork were neat....I look forward to hearing from you.Rgards,Jonathan Brincat What’s the difference between them? The first one is an informal email. And the second one is a formal email. An informal emailStart off with a pleasant, casual greeting, such as "Hi," "Hey," or "Howdy." Address your recipient by her first name, or a nickname. If you are writing to a family member, you could write something like "Hey, Sis," or "Hi, Dad!"Type casual or slang expressions if you and your recipient already communicate that way when you speak. For example, you might write something like, "I have to go to the factory for an inspection next week" in a formal email, but in a casual email.Don't capitalize the beginning of every sentence if you want to convey a very relaxed, breezy and informal tone. Type paragraphs as your mood or emotion dictate, rather than following an organized, logical flow as you would in a formal message.End the message with a friendly farewell, such as "Cheers," "See you later," or "Love," instead of the more formal types of sign-offs such as "Sincerely Yours," or "Yours Truly."A formal emailDeliver a clear messageUse correct grammar, vocabulary and punctuationBe conciseRemember that the key is to convey information more effectively, not to impress the other person with your rich vocabulary, and make your writing easier to read with simpler sentence patterns and clear organization. Avoid cliches and omit words that don't bring anything new to your message.Part 2—Words and expressions advertisement/ədˈvɜːtɪsmənt/n. 广告e.g. The advertisements are intended to improve the company's image.youth/juːθ/n.
