(2022·江苏江苏)Every day at Misselthwaite Manor was exactly the same as the day before. Mary woke up in her room and Martha was making a fire. Then she ate her breakfast and after that she went out and ran around the garden. She hated the strong wind. But the fresh air put colour into her face and soon she started eating more.
There were no toys in her room or in the garden. So, because she had nothing to play with, she walked a lot and tried to find things. Sometimes she saw Ben Weatherstaff, but he was always busy and he usually looked angry.
One day Mary saw Ben Weatherstaff’s robin on top of the wall. She was very happy to see him again. The bird chirped(唧唧叫). Did he know her? Was he speaking to her?
“It’s me, Mary!” she shouted. “I like you! I like you!”
He flew to the top of a tree and started singing loudly. “He’s in the secret garden,” Mary thought. She walked around the garden and looked very carefully but she couldn’t see a door.
That night after supper, she decided to ask Martha about the locked garden.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the garden, Martha?”
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden. She made it after they got married.”
“But how did Mrs. Craven die?” asked Mary.
“There was an old tree with a branch(树枝) like a seat in the garden. One day she was sitting there and the branch broke. The branch hit her and the next day she died. Now Mr. Craven hates the garden.”
Mary didn’t ask any more questions. She sat beside the fire and listened to the wind outside on the moor(荒原). But as she was listening, she heard another sound. It was like a child crying. “Do you hear that?” she asked Martha.
“No,” she answered. “It’s the wind.”
Suddenly the wind blew the door of the room open. Mary could hear the sound more clearly now. “There it is!” said Mary. “Someone’s crying.”
Martha ran and shut the door. “It’s only the wind,” she said angrily. But Mary didn’t believe her.

    Problem
Dear Robert,I really like the Russian singer Teo. I wanted to go to his concert. My parents promised me that if I did well in my exams, they would take me to Teo’s concert. But after I did so, they didn’t keep their promise. What should I do?

(2022·江苏南京)China would allow all married couples to have as many as three children from May 31, 2021 on. The decision came five and a half years after the country allowed all couples to have two children.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Communist Party of China. The move quickly followed the release of China’s seventh census (人口普查) findings, which showed that the country’s population was growing at its slowest rate since the 1950s. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (国家统计局), the number of babies born in China fell by 2.65 million to 12 million in 2020.
China is hoping that the policy (政策) change will help solve the problem of its falling birth rate and ageing population. Xinhua News Agency said the change would help to improve the structure of the country’s population.
The new policy will come with several supportive measures (支持措施). Among these measures, China will lower educational costs for families, step up tax (税) and housing support and make sure to protect the rights and interests (利益) of working women. It would also seek (寻求) to educate young people “on marriage and love”.

(2022·江苏宿迁)Scientists have calculated(计算) that almost 2,000 nearby stars—and hundreds of possible Earth-like planets around those stars—have had a clear view of Earth during human civilization(人类文明时期).
If any of those planets have life, someone out there could find that there’s life back here based on oxygen in our atmosphere(大气), or by radio waves from human sources.
One way humans look for planets is by watching them pass in front of the star they are orbiting(环绕), which dims(使变暗淡) the stars light slightly. Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University(康奈尔大学卡尔·萨根研究所) and Jacqueline Faherty of the American Museum of Natural History wisely turned that around, looking to see what star systems could watch Earth as it passes in front of the sun.
They looked at the 331,312 stars within 326 light years of Earth—one light-year is 9.5 trillion kilometers. The angle(角度) to see Earth pass in front of the sun is so small that only 1,715 of those stars could see our planet at some point in the last 5,000 years, including 313 that can no longer see us because we’ve moved out of view.
Another 319 stars will be able to see Earth in the next 5,000 years, including a few star systems where scientists have already found Earth-like planets.
The closest star on Kaltenegger’s list is Wolf 359, which is 7.9 light years away. It has been able to see us since the mid 1970s.
13.According to Paragraph 4, we know light years are units of ________.
    A.time B.area C.length D.weight
14.If scientists find radio waves from human sources on another planet, we can infer(推断) that ________.
A.the planet is near us B.the planet has life on it
C.the planet travels around Earth D.the planet has a good angle to see Earth
15.From the passage, we can learn ________.
A.Earth is the only planet for humans to live on
B.life on every planet can have a clear view of Earth
C.1715 stars could see Earth because they are the closest
D.Earth’s passing in front of the sun will dim the sunlight

    Gina’ Space                                         8:32 a. m. 11th February 2020
UpcyclingNowadays, we are more wasteful than ever. We need to start living more responsibly—but how? One answer is to upcycle. I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. I made a “new” hat for my brother. It used to be my dad’s sweater. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try.
    Comments
Terry-B                                9:08 a. m. 11th February 2020 Why don’t you give your older clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear any more. I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.
    Gina                                   9:28 a. m. 11th February 2020
Good point! I’m talking about the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil rich, we should give it to those in need.

(2022·江苏扬州)I was pleased at running away from Long John Silver though I knew he was still somewhere nearby on the island.
As I was trying to find a safer place to hide myself, I heard some men talking close by. It was Silver and Tom.
“I want you with me!” Silver shouted, “when we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too.” “No,” cried Tom, “I told you. I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you!” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.
I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast, not thinking about the direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw a figure move quickly from tree to tree. What it was, whether a bear or a man or a monkey? Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.
As the figure was getting closer to me. It was a man. “Who are you?” I asked.
“Ben Gunn,” he answered. “I’m poor Ben Gunn, and I haven’t spoken with a man these three years. Who are you, mate?” “Jim,” I told him.
“Now, Jim, tell me is that Flint’s ship?” he asked in fear, pointing to the ship which I ran away from.
“No, and Flint is dead. But there are some of Flint’s hands aboard.”
“Not a man… with one… leg?” Ben asked in a tremulous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
“You mean Silver? He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill us and take over the ship!”
“Good boy,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried(埋)the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death—him against six.”
Suddenly, the noise of explosions(爆炸)stopped our talking…

(2022·江苏扬州)Researchers at Georgia Tech have been working to improve a musical robot called Shimon. Now Shimon doesn’t simply play music, he also writes the words to his own songs and sings them.
Shimon has been around for quite a while as a musical robot. Even back in 2015, he was playing with other musicians at the Kennedy Center in New York. What Shimon could do back then was already pretty cool.
Using AI(人工智能), Shimon was taught to write his own music. ① For Shimon, that meant he could not only make up his own music, but do it in real time, while playing with other musicians.
Now Shimon can write the words to his own songs. ② Shimon learned to write the words for the songs the same way he learned to write music—by being “fed” thousands and thousands of examples. Shimon was trained on the lyrics (歌词) to 50, 000 songs.
Georgia Tech professor Gil Weinberg, who leads the Shimon project, gets Shimon going with a starting idea. Shimon then writes the lyrics based around that idea. “You’ll get a word like ‘storm’, and then it’ll produce a lot of relational words, like ‘wind’ and ‘rain’.” He says Shimon gets many ideas, keeps the good ones, and builds on them.
③ To give Shimon a voice, the Georgia Tech team worked with experts at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain. The voice was created using AI and sounds very much like a man.
④ To show off Shimon and his new abilities, the researchers have recorded one of Shimon’s songs, called “Into Your Mind”. They have made a video for the song, which is out on Youlube.
Later this spring, the team plans to put out an album(专辑) of about 8—10 of Shimon’s songs. There are also plans for Shimon to go on tour with a band to play and sing his songs live.
For Mr Weinberg, that’s the main goal behind the Shimon project—not to have robots take over, but to have robots and humans make something beautiful together.
27.The aim of the first paragraph is ________.
A.to give an introduction B.to lead a music topic
    C.to explain a science problem D.to make a conclusion
    28.Paragraphs 3—5 mainly talks about ________.

(2022·江苏·无锡市)When our son Bradley was ten, the new bicycle he had received earlier that year was stolen. Owning a bicycle was a big deal to our children when they were little. They spent hours and hours, day after day, on their bicycles, riding up and down the footpath, and in the front of the house. We also rode together as a family a lot. Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending any money.
Bradley had discovered that his bicycle had been stolen from our backyard in Campbell town, South Australia, when he and his sister went outside for a morning ride. He couldn’t believe that someone would do this.
He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bicycle to be returned, and tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning, when I went out to collect the mail, I found a white envelope (信封) with the magical words, “Buy yourself a new bicycle”. There was a $100 banknote inside.
We were very touched that someone had the heart to do this. We’ve never been able to thank the person but we suspect (猜想) that it may have been one of our wonderful neighbors. Bradley painted a big “ ▲ “ on the sign and we left it outside for a couple of weeks afterwards, hoping the kind stranger would drive down our street.
A delighted Bradley was able to buy a new bicycle. As the years went on, the bicycles became bigger and more expensive but remained just as important for those family bicycle rides. Now Bradley is 25. Sometimes I miss the days when receiving a bicycle was the best thing in the world to them.
All these years later we are still thankful for the stranger’s kindness. We were a young family with three little children and it meant a lot to us. We still talk about it and, even now, wonder who the kind stranger was.

(2022·江苏·无锡市)It’s been said that life turns on small things. Sometimes it’s hard to see how small choices can change your life. But when put together over time, the little things can make the biggest difference.
The theme of Success for Teens is “Little Things Matter”. The book helps teens identify (识别) small, positive (积极的) choices they can make in their lives to help them reach their goals. Lots of teens don’t realize how the little choices in their lives can have lasting influences. Often they focus on (专注于) the bigger events, such as a major exam, a big game or competition, or choosing a college. The little things, however, can go unnoticed unless your teen understands how important they can be.
The little things that lead to success are mostly easy to do. Help your teen identify a few areas in everyday life where he or she can make small, positive choices. It might be as simple as getting up on time, prioritizing (按重要性排列) their schoolwork, putting in an extra 10 minutes of practice or using some spare time to help someone else.
Nineteen-year-old Kyle Freas used to be on his school baseball team and would play every day after school. When the season was over, he had an empty three hours a day, so he started spending one third of such extra time daily, looking for ways to help other kids. Over the last few years, his project has raised thousands of dollars to help abused, homeless and sick children. Kyle spent just a little time each day doing something that ended up benefiting (有益于) a lot of kids. The important thing to understand is that Kyle made the small and positive decisions necessary for success.
Make sure your child understands that even though the results of the positive choices may not be seen right away, they are building on each other and taking him or her on a path that will lead to success.
40.What can you learn from paragraph 2?
A.Dealing with big events is the most important in one’s life.

    A.Kind-hearted. B.Creative. C.Brave. D.Confident.

When I was younger, I was crazy about reading. I could get through a whole book in a day, and used to beg my parents every night to let me stay up late so that I could just finish my chapter.
However, while there are many books for younger children, once you reach your mid-teens, the choices become limited. I found myself choosing between books for children that were simple and not that interesting, and adult books that I couldn’t quite understand.
This lack (缺少) of choice finally led me to read less and less. When I was in the secondary school, the only books I read were ones we were told in English class, and I was never very interested in my teacher’s choices.
Luckily, I realized quickly that deciding to go to university meant I had signed up for four years of reading books. I chose a French literature module (课程) in my first year. I started out, thinking I wouldn’t enjoy any of the works we were studying over the course of the year. However, I soon realized that at a university level, the discussion was more fruitful and I found I had a lot to say! And being able to discuss my thoughts with others meant I could better understand the books.
I began reading again for pleasure, starting with Malcolm X’s autobiography (自传) and never looking back. Now, during my year abroad, I spend a lot of my spare time in bookshops and reading in cafes. I’m so happy that I rediscovered my love of books.

(2022·江苏·扬州市)Seventy percent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous body of seawater — the ocean. In 2008, the United Nations recognized June 8 as Word Oceans Day. It’s a day to think about the important role that the oceans play in our daily lives, the dangers that our oceans are facing and the action we can take to protect them.
The importance of our oceans: The oceans is home to most plants and animals on earth. Marine (海生的) plants provide us with 70 per cent of the oxygen that we breathe. The ocean controls our climate, providing not only heat in winter but also cool air in summer. It also provides us with both food and medicine. No matter where you live on the planet, no matter how far from the sea, your life may depend on the oceans. Now you know how important oceans are for people!
The problems our oceans face: The most serious problem the oceans face at the moment is plastic pollution. Reducing single-use plastic, including plastic bags and plastic bottles, has been an important theme of World Oceans Day for a number of years. Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also a huge problem. Rising sea temperatures have a direct influence on weather patterns and are seen as partly responsible for an increase in extreme weather conditions.
▲ People celebrate the day in many different ways, including special events at aquariums and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, art contests and film festivals. You can join in to remind people about the importance of our oceans and to make a difference.
51.Why did the United Nations set up World Oceans Day?
A.To show people how large the oceans are in all. B.To tell people how to deal with the oceans.
C.To make people celebrate one more festival. D.To let people know how important the oceans are.
52.What CANNOT oceans provide us with according to the passage?

(2022·江苏·扬州市)To Friend or Not to Friend
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have been popular, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize how important social networks are in their lives.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to refuse their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores (忽视) their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.” Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
    55.From Paragraph 2, we learn that ________.
A.parents feel secure about the privacy online
B.social networks successfully fill the generation gap
C.parents have realized the importance of social networks
D.social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate
    56.Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because ________.
A.they hide something from their parents B.they are unwilling to be watched by parents
C.their parents will fall behind in technology D.their parents make bad comments on them
57.The passage is mainly about ________.
    A.parents’friend requests B.social networks C.privacy online D.the generation gap
58.The passage is written mainly for ________.
    A.teachers B.parents C.teenagers D.researchers

(2022·江苏连云港)Nowadays, there are so many detectives in fiction that detective stories are considered their own genre(类别). Where did this genre come from? Most people think detective stories were created by US writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). His detective was named C.Auguste Dupin, and first appeared in 1841.
Poe created Dupin before anyone heard the word “detective”, says the website Novel Suspects. So, he is usually considered the father of detective fiction.
In Poe’s stories, Dupin is born into a rich French family. He is skilled at guessing the thoughts of others by noticing the smallest details. He also has a good friend who tells his stories and explains certain details to readers.
Does that sound familiar? Arthur Conan Doyle used Poe’s style as a blueprint(蓝图)for Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. He was influenced by Poe.
Dupin’s way of solving cases is different. He enters the mind of the criminal and then tries to think the same way as the criminal. By knowing everything that a criminal knows, he can solve any crime. Take The Purloined Letter as an example, which is about finding a letter that is hidden by a minister(大臣). Dupin places himself in the mind of the minister and realizes that the minister would have hidden the letter in the most obvious (明显的)place.
Another thing Dupin is famous for is that he sometimes solves cases and helps people without getting paid. For example, in one story, Dupin helps a man for free who was charged for a crime he hadn’t done. Perhaps this is one of the reasons he is such a popular character.

72.What do we know about Dupin from the article?
A.He is skilled at telling stories.

73.What’s the best title for the text?

The film, first released in 1983, displays many aspects of traditional Chinese culture. The Legend of Sealed Book tells the story of how two boys fight against three fox spirits. The look of the three fox spirits comes from Peking Opera makeup (造型). The waters and mountains are in the style of traditional Chinese ink wash paintings.

China’s first ink wash animation (动画) actually came out in 1960. The film Little Tadpole (蝌蚪) Looking for Mummy has all the elements of the animals, plants and rocks drawn with ink and brush.
The animators(动画制作者) learned from the great artist Qi Baishi. The film is only about 15 minutes long, but it took lots of work. Without computers, the animators had to draw everything by hand. To save time, the clever artists stamped the tadpoles’ bodies on paper with a special seal.

In the past few years, ink wash animations have become popular in China. Now, animators are combining ink wash painting with computer technology. (2022·江苏扬州)Just the other day, I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice the writer was giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer’s opinion, foreigners are an “opportunity (机会)” to improve your oral English. If the foreigner doesn’t want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn’t want to spend time with anyway. I think the advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other “Lao Wai” living in China, I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar (熟悉的) ways. However, I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been rewarding, I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However, I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an “opportunity” to improve their oral English. I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation.
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone who companies (陪伴) them. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as friends, not opportunities. We expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush.
81.What does the underlined phrase “this matter” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指代)?
A.How to improve oral English B.How to translate written English
C.How to give advice on languages D.How to make friends with foreigners
82.The writer of the passage felt ________ after he or she read one piece of advice.
    A.angry B.nervous C.hopeful D.happy
83.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.People in China like chatting with some foreigners.
B.People in China often make friends with foreigners.
C.The writer of the passage thinks his life in China is meaningful.
D.The writer of the passage feels uneasy when meeting strangers.
84.Which sentence can be put in the empty box in the last paragraph?
A.Many hands make light work. B.True friendships stand the test of time.
C.You can’t put all your eggs in one basket. D.Friendship can’t stand always on one side.

(2022·江苏扬州)In recent years, large-scale (大规模的) tree plantation programmes are a popular way to deal with the climate crisis (气候危机).These trees, they store lots of carbon dioxide from the air. They give us oxygen we breathe. And there’s no doubt that the right trees in the right place is a good thing. However, large-scale tree planting is becoming a problem.
Yatir forest is Israel’s largest forest. But the four million trees are actually having a warming effect on the planet. And the bright desert surface reflected (反射) more sunlight than the present darker tree canopy (树冠) that replaced it. This forest is making global warming worse.
What the Yatir forest warns us is that choosing the right location is very important. The wrong location can also use up groundwater and dry up streams. Choosing the right location isn’t the only challenge for large-scale tree plantations. Most of the time, these tree planting programmes choose one type of trees. They are bad for biodiversity (生物多样性).
Another big problem is planting the wrong type of trees. In South Africa, the introduction of new types of trees has led to covering large areas of land. The country now spends millions of pounds clearing the trees every year.
So, protecting the forests would be a better use of our time and resources. We should allow space around the forests for them to naturally expand. And it’s the best way to get more trees on the planet. One place where planting trees is good is in the cities. Trees help reduce noise, improve air quality, help prevent flooding, and even improve your physical and mental health.
There is no one solution to the climate crisis. We have to use all the tools at hand to reduce greenhouse gases and slow down global warming.

(2022·江苏淮安)Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard(哈佛)University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied(欺负)by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Isral, only one of three people say so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions(观点)about failure(失败). In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may by why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversations. And don’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.
    99.How many people are shy?
    A.None. B.All people.
C.About 50 percent of people. D.About 80 percent of people.
100.What is the passage mainly about?
    A.Happiness. B.Shyness C.Kindness. D.Loneliness.
101.What does the underlined word “genetic” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Passed down from parents. B.Learned from friends.
C.Taught by teachers. D.Made up by brothers.
102.What can be learned from the passage?
A.Most little babies are born shy and quiet.
B.If you are shy now, you will be shy forever.
C.Many shy children have older brothers and sisters.

What do we really mean by being open? Being open is a kind of invitation to others to come in, to speak and to share. It is important in letting others get to know how we think and feel. In this way we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren’t open with others, we won’t fully believe in ourselves or others.
Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same with your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. Finally, try not to say, “I don’t know.” This usually means I don’t want to think about it any more.
Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don’t know well. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel very uncomfortable at times.
In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we’d better keep the balance between being open and not being too open.
    Why to be open
●____104____ others to come in, to speak and to share.

(2022·江苏·扬州市)One day, a baby snail found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell at any time. He was confused, so he went up to his mother and asked, “Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy?” His mother said, “Because we don’t have bones to hold us up. We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”
The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar(毛毛虫) has no bones, either, and she can’t move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?” The mother snail answered, “That’s because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky. Then sky can protect her.”
The baby snail had one more question, “But the earthworm moves like us. He has no bones and he won’t turn into butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell?” His mother said, “He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him.”
The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!” His mother smiled at him, “That’s why we have a shell. My dear, imagine that if we don’t have the shells, what will happen to us? Hot sun will dry out our bodies and we’ll have nowhere to sleep. What’s worse, we’ll die in the heavy rain. (2022·江苏扬州)Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms with a history of more than 200 years. It is said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved the theatre. At the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kunqu Opera was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Various local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Drawing on the good points of these local operas, the new Beijing Opera came into being and became Qianlong’s favorite.
Beijing Opera mixes different art forms, including singing, dancing, acrobatics and Wushu. All these art forms are put into one performance. Facial painting (脸谱) is one of the most important signs of Peking Opera. It shows the roles’ personalities. For example, a red face usually shows the role’s bravery; a white face shows the treachery and guile; a black face shows the role is a strict man.
Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, a famous performer, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background.” This is how one traveler described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.

(2022·江苏淮安)(2017﹒内蒙古赤峰)One pleasant New Year morning, Edward got up and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year.
He looked in every room, and shouted “Happy New Year” to every one of his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat it to those he met. When he came back, his father gave him two new dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some nice books.
As he ran down the street with a light heart to the bookshop, he saw a poor German family—the father, mother and three children walking in the cold wind.
“I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man shook his head. “You do not belong to this country?” asked Edward. The man shook his head again, because he could not understand or speak English. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, he seemed to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these people were poor and in trouble. He took out his dollars and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife. They said something in their language, which meant, “Thank you very much, and we will remember you forever.”
