(2022·江苏·景山)William Shakespeare was born more than 440 years ago and spent his childhood in his hometown, Stratford-on-Avon. Little was known about his childhood though many stories are told, some of which may be true. He probably went to Grammar school at Stratford. At thirteen he had to leave school as his father became poorer at one time. So William had to make his own living. At the age of eighteen he married a farmer’s daughter.
Not long after he left Stratford for London. London was growing quickly. All kinds of people could be found in it, and here Shakespeare met travelers, students and scholars, and he was very interested in the stories they told. He also met writers and actors. He soon found some work in a theater. Before long he became an actor and writer of plays too. There were a few theatres in London. One of the most famous of these was called Globe. Shakespeare himself became one of the owners of this theater. He became famous as a writer of plays soon after. He made use of the writing of others and found ideas in the old poems of Chaucer. By his gift he turned all these old stories into great works of his own. Shakespeare wrote no fewer than thirty-seven plays in his life. Now his works are loved and studied all over the world.

(2022·江苏·景山)When I first started reading The Art of War by famous philosopher (哲学家) Sun Tzu, I really had no idea what I was getting into. To be honest, I just thought the title sounded cool. I was in high school at the time and barely knew anything about war or philosophy, let alone (更不必说) a combination (结合) of the two.
As I was trying to read different types of books at the time, some Chinese philosophy like The Art of War sounded like an interesting choice. But as soon as I opened it and started reading, I was immediately confused. Why did so many people find this book interesting? Some quotes (引语) like “The skillful soldier does not raise a second levy, neither are his supply-wagons loaded more than twice”(善用兵者 ,役不再籍 ,粮不三载) didn’t make sense to me.
But like most philosophy, The Art of War should not be taken literally (字面上). And after reading a bit more deeply, I found some interesting ideas that I could apply to my own life. For example, the quote “If the enemy leaves a door open, you must tush in”(敌人开阖 ,必亟入之) can mean to seize (抓住) chances quickly and confidently before they disappear. I believe that the quote “Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances”(故其战胜不复 ,而应形于无穷) means to be flexible (灵活的) and ready to change your way of thinking when you run into challenges.
It’s been a long time since I read the book, but I still remember some of its lessons. It was an interesting look into ancient Chinese culture that is still useful today. It’s no wonder that so many business people around the world have read it over the years.
7.The author said he was “confused” in Paragraph 2 because ________.
A.he was surprise B.he thought it’s thoughtful
C.he found it interesting D.he wasn’t able to understand
8.Many business people like to read the book because ________.
A.it mirrors modern Chinese culture B.it is still useful today
C.it’s a good book to learn about Chinese customers D.it is recommended by many famous people
9.With the help of Paragraph 3, what is the Chinese meaning of “The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for a chance of defeating the enemy.”?
A.胜可知 ,而不可为。 B.昔之善战者 ,先为不可胜 ,以待敌之可胜。
C.不可胜在己 ,可胜在敌。 D.故善战者 ,能为不可胜 ,不能使敌之不可胜。
10.Which is CORRECT about The Art of War?
A.It is not difficult to read and understand.
B.It can be taken literally like most philosophy.
C.The more deeply we read it, the harder it will be.
D.It is about the combination of the war and philosophy.
(2022·江苏·景山)Me: Hello, Television Viewers! I am Aziza Bellamy, and thanks for watching. I want to especially thank you, Ms. Bertha, for agreeing to this interview on live television. It’s a pleasure to meet you, the first-known trans-galactic visitor to Earth. Now, I understand that you are from a planet called Zadernol.
Bertha: Just call me Miss Bertha or Bertha, please, but not “Ms. ”
Me: Okay, sorry about that. So, you’ve been on Earth for about a week now. What have been your biggest disappointments or challenges so far?
Bertha: It’s not the worst planet I’ve ever been to. Mercury was much worse. The aliens—oops, I mean humans, have been unkind, overall. The family I’m staying with, for example, were nice at first. But now they roll their eyes whenever I open my mouth to say anything. They’re not interested in any of my stories. And I think they may be trying to avoid me. Worst of all, they make me wash my own dishes and bathe myself. They’re so rude.
Me: Oh, um…wow. That’s just…
Bertha: I am used to having high standards when I choose where to stay, by the way. I have stayed with royalty and presidents on other planets. And they all adored (崇拜) me and begged me not to leave. But I gave this human family a chance to host me. I mean, really, they should be grateful that I selected them, of all the people on Earth, to wash my clothes and cook my meals and entertain (款待) me.
Me: Well, what you’re saying is surprising, Bertha. Do you think it’s possible that this family just wants you to pitch in a little, to be a good guest?
Bertha: It’s odd to me that you’re not agreeing with me. If you were smarter, you’d agree with me. That’s another thing. Everyone on Zadernol is smarter than the smartest person on Earth. Earth is below me.
Me: You know what. Bertha? I’m starting to see why you’re so unhappy here on Earth. You’re just a boastful (自夸的), spoiled alien.

14.What might Aziza write in his diary about the interview?

(2022·江苏扬州)Frank and his brother Jack lived near the ocean. Frank was outgoing while Jack was shy. They liked doing different things. Frank was famous for organizing games of beach volleyball, football, and any other sport imaginable. Jack preferred to draw, paint, or build sandcastles (沙堡).
Frank didn’t understand why Jack would rather do artistic things than play ball. He believed sports often allowed many kids to play together. That was when Jack’s idea hatched. He would show Frank what doing things together looked like!
After Jack finished creating a special sandcastle with stairs, towers and walls, he took pictures of it. Then he painted colorful posters featuring ( 突出) his sandcastle and the question, “Can you top this?” He hung his posters everywhere in town, announcing his plan for a day of sandcastle artistry-all ages welcome.
When Frank saw poster, he told Jack that no one would come. Still, shortly after sunrise on Saturday, Jack was on the beach digging in the sand. By mid-morning, four kids were sculpting (雕塑) the sand alongside him. By noon the number had increased a lot.
After Frank came back from his ball game, he went to check how his brother’s plan turned out.
He couldn’t believe what he saw. At least 30 people were building a city of sandcastles, and everyone was chatting and laughing and working together! It was the most beautiful thing he had seen on the beach.
“I guess you’ve proved me wrong,” Frank said. “You should make this sandcastle day a yearly tradition!” Handing Frank a shovel (铲子) with smile, Jack got started together with his brother on their super creation in the sand.

(2022·江苏扬州)① It is common to surf the Internet at home now. However, a recent survey showed over 90% of parents are not clear what websites their children visit. I strongly believe that a training project should be started to help parents to improve their internet and computer skills. Then they can better monitor and guide their children.
② Providing training would get parents to pay more attention to their children’s online activities.
This is one advantage. If parents had a better understanding of the internet and websites, they would see the need to make sure that their children use it properly and responsibly.
③ Providing training to parents would allow parents to help their children with their schoolwork as well. These days, some homework of online courses needs to be done on computer. If parents have poor computer skills, they will be of little or no help with the homework. That can make parents very upset. Some people argue that it is good that students can work independently on computers. However, it is clear that students, especially young students often need this kind of home support.
④ Improving parents’ Internet and computer skills might also be a good way for parents to improve their relationships with their children. These days, children spend a lot of their free time on computers. If parents want to be part of their free time, they need to see that playing on computers can be a fun family activity. Joining their children can help parents bridge the gap between them and their children.
⑤ Most people believe that children need to be helped and guided to use the Internet in a proper and responsible way. Therefore, training is extremely important.
23.In the passage, the writer ________.
A.advises children not to spend a lot of their free time on computers
B.thinks parents should improve their Internet and computer skills
C.tries to help children find online courses and finish the homework
D.explains why parents should pay more attention to their children
24.According to the passage, the survey tells us that many parents ________.
A.seldom help their children design websites B.never tell their children how to surf the internet
C.don’t know what websites their children visit D.never limit their children’s time on internet use
25.The underline word “that” in Paragraph 3 refers to (指的是) ________.
A.Being helpless with the schoolwork B.There aren’t enough online courses
C.There is no computer at home D.Giving their children too much stress
26.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.①/②③④⑤ B.①/②③/④⑤ C.①/②③④/ ⑤ D.①②/③④/⑤

From tiny seeds (种子), great discoveries grow. A mini-garden carried on China’s Chang’e 4 moon lander recently became home to the first plant to grow on another world.
This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 2, the probe (探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often regarded as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver of a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Chang’e 4’s mission (使命) is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring (探索) whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Chang’e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground), and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Chang’e 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold (it can drop to -170*C on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.

A.another success for Chang’e 4 B.Chang’e 4 moon lander
C.tiny seeds in the soil D.the steps of an experiment

A.the far side of the moon gets less sunlight
B.the earth plants know the way to grow on the moon
C.we can seethe far side of the moon from the earth
D.the steins fail to grow away from the earth’s gravity
30.What can be inferred (推理) from the passage?
A.Plants can be grown on the moon soon. B.It is perfect to do experiments on the moon.
C.The cotton shoots can last days on the moon. D.We can see a new moon at the start of February.

Once upon a time, a hippo (河马)lived in a river next to a big tree.
One day, a bird came and nested(筑巢) in the tree. The songs of the bird filled the hippo with so much envy that he couldn’t think of anything else. Every day, he would think why he wasn’t born to be a bird even though the bird told him many times he was lucky to be such a good swimmer.
Finally, the hippo made up his mind that he would come out of the river, climb the tree and start singing. However, when he tried to climb the tree, it was very clear that the hippo didn’t have wings, nor claws to climb with.
Realizing that he would never climb up the tree, he angrily hit the tree until it came crashing to the ground. Then he stepped onto the leaves of the fallen tree, and began singing.
Unluckily, hippos can’t sing, either. All that came from his mouth were terrible noises, and when the other animals heard this, they all came around to make fun of the hippo.

I’ve been writing detective stories since I was a teenager. Some people think it’s a strange job for a woman, but I think crime fiction is for everyone. I’ve started giving writing classes and the most common question people ask is, “Where do you start?” It’s impossible to give fixed rules, but there are some general tips that people often find useful.
●Before you start writing, choose a time period and place that sound realistic(现实的). A useful tip is to write about what you know. If you were born in Paris or London, it might make sense to set your story in a European country. Of course, you can write about any century, but you’ll have to do a lot more research to make your story believable.
●The character of your detective is very important. He or she must have qualities that help them solve the crime, but they also need characteristics that make them an individual(个人). He or she must also fit in the time and place of your story. Readers are very knowledgeable, and they will notice if you get any details wrong about the time period.
●Every detective story needs a crime, of course. You need to explain what happens before the crime, the crime itself and what happens next. Remember that you don’t always have to write about a murder. Some readers don’t enjoy stories filled with guns and blood. So, why not write about a theft, kidnapping, or something different like an environmental crime?
●Clues are important to keep the readers’ interest. They must be interesting, but not too difficult or repetitive(重复的). The readers also need to know who the suspects are and whether they can prove that they were somewhere else when a crime was committed. Readers love a “twist” at the end of the story—-a surprise or a new fact that brings the action to its conclusion.
37.The writer of the passage is ________.
A.a detective B.a woman C.a teenager D.a reader
38.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.You won’t have to do so much research if you write about any century.
B.The readers know whether the writer makes a mistake about the time period.
C.The clues in the detective story must be interesting, difficult or repetitive.
D.The readers enjoy stories like a murder because they are filled with guns and blood.
39.What does the underlined word “twist” in the last paragraph mean?
A.重复 B.结论 C.转折 D.冲突
40.Why did the writer write this passage?
A.To keep the readers’ interest. B.To tell a real detective story.
C.To describe the life of a story writer. D.To give advice on writing a detective story.

Uncle Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven with Eva in the garden.
“Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.”
Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well: she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare.
“Stop that!” St Clare said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up? It’s what happens to children of her age.”
“But she has that cough!”
“That’s nothing. Maybe she has a little cold,” St Clare said.
Eva’s health got even worse. She became very weak and she could hardly leave the house, so St Clare sent her to the hospital.
In a week or two, it seemed that Eva’s health improved greatly. St Clare was happy and he was sure Eva would get better. But Miss Ophelia was not so sure, and neither was Eva herself. One afternoon, when St Clare called Eva to give her a present, “Papa, I am going to leave you soon.” said Eva, and she started crying.
“Oh, my dear!” said St Clare, “you’re just tired and a little weak because of the illness. You will be perfectly fine soon.”
“No, Papa,” said Eva, “I won’t get better. I am not sad. I’m sorry for you, Papa, and my friends, but I want to go!”
“Why do you want to go? Are you unhappy, Eva?”
“Oh, I feel sad for our slaves(奴隶): they are all good and kind to me. I wish, Papa, they were all free.”
“Don’t you think we treat them well?” said St Clare.
“But what will happen to them if anything happens to you? There are very few men like you, Papa. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! Papa, isn’t there any way to make all slaves free?”
“Slavery is a very bad thing, but I don’t know what to do about it.” said St Clare. “Promise me that Uncle Tom will be free as soon as I’m asleep.” said Eva.

Flow like the river of change
Little stream ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed.
“Maybe I can’t reach the ocean,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If a breeze (微风) can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.”

(2022·江苏·南京师范大学附属中学树人学校九年级期末)The Sequoia National Forest is in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is home to the most massive trees in the world. At its entrance is the Trail of 100 Giants. This is a short, easy paved trail that people can walk. It gives visitors great views of more than a hundred sequoias (美洲杉). These trees grow only in the special geology of the slopes of the Sierra Nevadas. The largest of the trees is 20 feet around and 220 feet tall. You almost need a telescope to see the top of it!
The sequoia trees that line the Trail of 100 Giants have stood for generations. Many of them started growing in the Middle Ages. The trees watched the first European settle in California. They grew through the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s and have lived through two world wars. The trees were declared a national monument (纪念) in 2000.
Then, in October of 2011, two of the giants fell. One photographer from Germany recorded the trees crashing to the ground with a video camera. Watchers were astonished (吃惊地) that these enormous trees could topple like babies trying to take their first step. One explanation was that the summer had been very wet. The ground was quite hydrated. The earth may have been too soggy (湿软) to hold the shallow roots of the trees.
Some officials fear that the foot traffic from tourists might have weakened the trees. Even pollution from cars visiting the park could have damaged them. It might be, though, that the trees were simply old. It was the time in their life cycle to die.
The trees may have been as much as 1,500 years old. They were more than 200 feet tall. The two that fell were connected at their base. Part scientists believe that when the first one fell, it brought the second one down with it.
What should be done with the fallen trees? They fell across a popular path. The trunks are too big for most walkers to climb over. The path they block is designed for people in wheelchairs. There is no other path that these people can use. The Park Service asked the public what they thought.
Many biologists think the trees should be left just as they are. Letting nature take its course. Some people feel that the Forest Service should drill a tunnel through the trunks, allowing people simply to walk through. Some want to build a bridge over the trees, and some think the path should go around the trees.
Park officials have decided to take their time deciding what to do. Since the trees are national monuments now, any decision must be carefully considered. The sequoias are a rare treasure. Even in death, they should be treated with respect.
63.From ________, we know that the trees have seen much of the history of the USA.

B.As a review of different explanations about the cause.

66.What is the main idea of the article?

B.The death of a sequoia is an important natural event.
C.It is lucky nobody was hurt when the sequoias fell.
D.People should do more to help save the sequoias.
(2022·江苏·南京师范大学附属中学树人学校九年级期末)My name is Luis. Two weeks ago on Saturday my friend Justin and I were biking along Riverside Trail. All at once Justin shouted, “There’s something sparking under those bushes!”
We started poking around. I spotted something shining and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! It’s a wallet with jewels on it.”
After I picked it up, we saw it had imitation jewels that reflected (反射) the sunlight.
“Let’s see if there is identification,” I said. “We should try to find the owner.”
We found photos, some money, and a library card for Mary Johnson. Justin said, “We can find a phone number on the Internet.”
We headed for the computer at Justin’s house and searched for “Johnson” in a directory for our town. We found eight Mary Johnsons and two M. Johnsons!
Justin asked, “Should we throw in the towel?”
I said, “No, we shouldn’t give up. Making phone calls might not work anyway. We should look for other clues first because she may live in another town, or she may have an unlisted number.”
We looked at the photos. One was old. Another was of a boy about two years old with “William, 2019” in handwriting on the back. A third photo showed a girl about seven in front of Mount Rushmore, and “Annalee, 2019” was written on the back.
Justin guessed, “Those two must be Mary Johnson’s children.”
I said, “On Monday we can ask teachers at school if they know Annalee Johnson.”
Justin said, “That’s a long time for Mary Johnson to wait for her wallet, and maybe Annalee goes to another school in town, so let’s look for other clues.”
We went through the wallet again and found an appointment card for an eye examination. The doctor’s office was in a mall in town, and the appointment was for two o’clock on Saturday afternoon—that same day!
I said, “We have to get to the mall soon. We have no time to lose.”
Justin said, “I’ll ask my mom to drive us.”
We got to the mall at exactly three minutes before two and sat down in the waiting room. In a few minutes, a woman walked in and said, “I have a two o’clock appointment. My name is Mary Johnson.”
Justin and I introduced ourselves and showed her the wallet. Her eyes lit up. She said, “What a relief! I have been beside myself!”
Mrs. Johnson thanked us over and over. She was elated to have back her money and the photos of her children and great-grandparents.
After we explained where we found the wallet, she said, “I took the children for a bike ride this morning. Annalee rode a bike, but William was in a cart attached to my bike. He must have found the wallet in my bag and tossed it from the cart.”
She added, “You should have a reward.” and handed each of us five dollars. It was worth missing out bike ride!

Music isn’t only a combination(结合体)of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects(反映)life. There are a lot of different kinds of music. Some of them appeared long ago, and some are modern. “Just because you can’t see something, that doesn’t mean it’s not there. ”
This old saying is quite meaningful for British sculptor Willard. The items he creates are so small that most of them fit on the head of a pin. You can see them clearly only through a microscope.
Many people want to own his art pieces. He’s been honored by the Queen of England for his great art achievements. At every one of his exhibitions, the question is always the same. __________
The answer is very, very carefully. So carefully, in fact, that he actually slows his breathing down and works in between breaths. Willard usually works under a microscope using special tools that he creates. To paint his works, he uses the hair from a fly as a paintbrush.
Creating these detailed works is a very long and difficult process, and it isn’t always enjoyable. “It is a terrible dream when I start but a nice dream when I finish,” he says. A single item can take at least several weeks to complete, which usually sit on a pin. Even the sound caused by traffic outside can influence Willard’s work, so he often works through the night.
People have asked Willard why he chose to do something that needed effort and took time. His interest in creating small things began when he was five. (2021·江苏无锡)I can’t remember if I was 9 or 10 years old, but I do remember that it was the last day of 4-H camp. I was looking in the mirror and checking my face for bruises (瘀伤). The day before, for some silly reason, I had got into a fight with another boy. It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to pull us apart and call it a draw, but in truth, I had lost. My head still hurt from a couple of the blows the other boy had landed. We hadn’t talked since the fight either but only stared coldly at each other from across the room.
Still, I was in a good mood this morning because I knew my Mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother, me and our friends. Soon I saw her walking up the sidewalk toward the steps of our cabin (小屋). She had been bringing these pizzas to us every 4-H camp for years now. I saw her smile as my brother and his friends all took the big cut pieces. She made sure, though, to save the last two pieces for me. I thanked her with a smile and started to eat when I saw my fight opponent(对手)standing off to the side by himself. At that moment, something moved me. I walked over to him and gave him one of the pieces. We talked, laughed and ate. And for some reason unknown to me at the time, the pizza tasted better than ever before.
I can see now what moved my heart. A little miracle (奇迹) was working inside of me—moving me to forgive, to give and to love. And I am so happy that I followed my heart.

(2021·江苏无锡)On Nov 8, Wang Yaping, a female astronaut (宇航员) of Shenzhou XIII, became China’s first and the world’s 16th female space walker. The expected six-month journey in space has left many curious about the differences between male and female astronauts, especially in terms of performing extravehicular (舱外的) activities (EVAs). Except body challenges, female astronauts have special advantages.
Understanding between astronauts is very important for carrying out EVAs, which is based on excellent communication skills. Women are better in communication and language expression, and this helps female astronauts do extravehicular activities, according to Yang Yuguang, head of Space Transportation Committee.
Men and women are different in body size, which also gives women special advantages for spacewalks. “Their generally smaller size is an advantage, as women will be able to control their weight better and perform different kinds of tasks,” Pang told China Daily.
Women in general weigh less, eat less food, use less oxygen(氧气), and therefore require less fuel(燃料) to get into space. An astronaut must weigh between 55 kilograms and 70 kilograms to fit in the cabin (舱) of spacecraft and use less fuel, according to CGIN.
A different body shape requires a different spacesuit. A spacesuit was prepared for Wang’s extravehicular activities, which was lighter than the males’. Designers optimized the pattern of this spacesuit in the lower part area to make it more suitable for astronauts with slimmer bodies.
According to Pang, many studies have found that female astronauts are more suitable for space tasks, and have advantages over male astronauts in qualities such as attention to detail and thinking thoughtfully .
Men do better in shorter-term, goal-oriented (目标导向的) situations while women are better in longer-term habitation-type (居住类) situations, according to National Geographic.

二、阅读回答问题
(2022·江苏·景山)Police dogs are given special training to help the police with their work. Many different types of dogs can be trained to do this work, but the best known ones are German shepherds and bloodhounds. In Britain, police dogs usually have a 13-week training course and many dogs fail. Not all dogs make good police dogs. They must be completely reliable and obedient. Most police dogs live with their handlers as part of the family, but they are not pets. They are working dogs and they have a job to do.
Police dogs are trained to chase and hold people who are trying to get away from the police. Police dogs are not vicious animals. They are trained to hold on to people until their handler tells them to let go.
Police dogs often go into dangerous places and they are given special vests to protect them from knife and gun attacks.
Dogs are not only trained to chase and catch criminals. They are also used for following suspects or finding missing people. This is because some dogs, such as bloodhounds, have a very good sense of smell and can be trained to recognize certain types of smells. Some dogs are used to find survivors after earthquakes or explosions and some are specially trained to find dead bodies.
In many countries dogs are used in airports to check luggage for drugs and bombs. Labradors, spaniels and beagles are used for this because they are friendly dogs and people are not afraid of them.

Scrooge was a cold, greedy, mean, old man. Scrooge and Marley were business partners for years. Scrooge was his only friend and his only mourner when Marley died. He lived in Jacob Marley’s old apartment. It was very rundown.
That evening, the fog and frost hung over the black gateway to the house. And the yard was so dark that Scrooge had to feel his way along with his hands. To his surprise, Scrooge saw Marley’s face instead of the knocker(门环)when Scrooge put his key in the lock. Scrooge looked at the door knocker for several moments, and then it changed back to being a door knocker again.
Scrooge was quite scared. He quickly closed the door and then he went up to his room. It was very dark because Scrooge only had a candle. But darkness didn’t worry Scrooge, because darkness is cheap. And Scrooge liked cheap things.
Suddenly he heard a loud clanking sound. It came from downstairs. Somebody was pulling a heavy chain over the barrels in the wine merchant’s cellar. It was coming straight towards his room.
The face was the same. It was Marley, he was dragging a chain. Scrooge stared at the ghost of Marley as it stood there before him. But still he didn’t believe it was really there.
“Who are you?” asked Scrooge, calmly.
“In life I was your partner. Jacob Marley.”
“Why are you carrying that chain?” asked Scrooge, trembling.
Scrooge was trying very hard not to be scared. The Ghosts voice scared him and its cold eyes frightened him.
“I wear the chain that I made in life,” replied the Ghost. “I made it link by link, and metre to by metre. I wound it around myself. Does it look strange to you?”
“I had the opportunity to be kind and do good in life. But I did nothing. Now I’m dead. I regret that,” cried the Ghost. “I’m here tonight to warn you. You can still escape my fate(命运). I’m giving you a chance... ”
