Chester is one of the best cities in the UK. As soon as you arrive in Chester you will appreciate the city’s unique atmosphere and sense of history. Travelling to Chester?
Chester is easily accessible by many means of transport — whether you are travelling by rail, car, bus or plane. Please check our route planner below to help you plan your journey to Chester. Hotels?

Sightseeing and Tours?

Typically, a person sitting in the driver’s seat of a car opens the door with the hand closest to it. It makes sense since doors are designed to be opened that way. Pull the handle and immediately the door is open. But if you happen to do that at the wrong time, you may create an obstacle (障碍) for a passing cyclist without knowing it. Then the cyclist will be sent falling off the bike, and the car door is likely to be damaged by the fast-moving bicycle.
Obviously the solution is for the person getting out of the vehicle to check for oncoming traffic, but car door design and long-time habits have made the process instinctual. Luckily, there’s a simple way to solve the problem: the Dutch reach. In other words, instead of using your left hand, reach for the door latch (门锁) with your right hand. This will force you to turn your body. At least, you’ll look into your side view mirror to see whether any car or bike is coming.
“It’s just what Dutch people do,” said Fred Wegman, the former managing director of the National Institute for Road Safety Research in the Netherlands. “All the Dutch are taught it. It’s part of regular driver education.”
The technique dates back about 50 or 60 years, and it was very popular between the 1960s and the
1980s. But it didn’t really become known as the Dutch reach until a retired American physician named Michael Charney started the Dutch Reach Project in 2016 in an effort to popularize the practice in the United States and beyond. According to The Times, he was motivated by the death of a 27-year- old who rode into an open car door and died just five blocks from his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Charney’s efforts may be paying off. Both Massachusetts and Illinois now include the Dutch reach in their drivers’ manuals (手册).
24. What is the first paragraph intended to show?
A. The poor design of the car door and handle.
B. A common conflict between cars and bicycles.
C. A main cause of traffic accidents linked to cyclists.
D. Potential risks associated with opening the car door.
25. What does the underlined word “instinctual” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Complex. B. Possible. C. Natural. D. Dangerous.
26. How does the Dutch reach help to reduce traffic accidents?
A. By making the person open the car door more easily.
B. By forcing the person to check for approaching traffic.
C. By reminding the person of the traffic lights frequently.
D. By helping the person see the side view mirror more clearly.
27. What made Charney introduce the Dutch reach into America?
A. Its popularity among Dutch people. B. Its appearance in drivers’ manuals.
C. A project launched in the year 2016. D. The death caused by a traffic accident.
C
Bees are a big part of the life cycle of plants, carrying pollen from one flower to another and allowing plants to produce their frequently yummy output. But with bee populations on the decline, what can take their place? How about soap bubbles(肥皂泡)?
It may sound fantastical. But Eijiro Miyako and his colleague at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have used battery—powered bubble makers to pollinate(授粉)a pear orchard. The details of their magical approach to agriculture are in the journal Science.
A few years back, Miyako and his team tried to copy the pollinating of honeybees by adopting a two—inch-long toy drone with brushes made of horsehair. But the tiny flyer was tough to control. And its hairy little brushes ended up damaging the delicate targets.
After spending some time blowing bubbles with his son, Miyako started thinking more seriously about these soapy little wonders. He figured bubbles would be sticky enough to carry and deliver a pollen load but soft and flexible, so they shouldn’t hurt a blossom when they land. The researchers chemically bettered their soapy solution to make bubbles that were mechanically stable and actually enhanced the pollination process. Out in the orchard, they aimed their soap bubbles at row after row of pear trees. And they found the bubble system worked just as well as the more labor—intensive pollination by hand: pear trees pollinated by bubble eventually yielded fruit—a sweet sign of success. Miyako has also upgraded the drone—this time using a larger model—equipped with a machine that lets out a huge number of bubbles in a short time. And it has a big advantage over the hand—held model. Because it’s fully autonomously controllable by GPS with Google Map. So the drones can make a beeline to where farmers need them, you know, to be.
28. Why do people try other ways to help pollinate plants?
A. Because raising bees needs much labor. B. Because the number of bees is decreasing.
C. Because bees work inefficiently. D. Because bees produce less honey now.
29. What was the problem with the toy drone?
A. It was hard to operate. B. It couldn’t work from a distance.
C. It produced few bubbles. D. It needed to be recharged often.
30. What can we learn about the upgraded drone?
A. It is a hand—held model. B. It is much more efficient.
C. It hurts blossoms sometimes. D. It is too large to be controllable.
31 What is the best title of the passage?
A. Pear trees bear less fruit recently B. The population of bees is decreasing
C. Drones benefit modern agriculture D. Soap bubbles help pollinate plants
D
It’s called the Bank of Happiness, but it has nothing to do with money. Founded a year ago in Estonia’s capital Tallinn, it’s a forum in which more than 2,000 members from Estonia and other countries connect to offer or receive services free of charge.
The site carries more than 500 ads in English, German and Estonian from people offering or seeking all kinds of things, including teaching and tips on cooking. The website is also translated into French and Spanish.
Founder Airi Kivi says the goal is to make people think and act with their hearts. “After the worldwide outbreak of the pandemic, I thought, ‘Wow, our bank is perfect for the crisis and a lot of people are unemployed and they can use it to harvest what they need.’”
So how does it work? It’s simple: You sign up using your real name and post what you are offering or what your need is, as long as it doesn’t involve money or products.
Masseuse Terge Reintem says she signed up when she was unemployed because she needed to improve her skills by learning from others. But she stayed on even after finding a new job because she says it feels good to volunteer. “If I discover a new technique, I want my bank customers to first experience it,” Reintem says, adding they are often nicer than the paying ones.
Member Veronika Davel says she infringed the rules with her first request when she asked for a product: a computer. But she did it unknowingly. Later, she began offering services of her own on the bank’s website. “The main thing I really could offer was English,” Davel explains. “There was a young girl who needed to have better English for her job and I gave her a hand.”
The site has many more offers of help than requests for it. That’s as it should be, Kivi says, adding that the bigger reward comes from giving.
32. How can the Bank of Happiness benefit its members?
A. They can help each other at no cost. B. They can place ads for their products.
C. They can travel to many countries for free. D. They can read much news about happiness.
33. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 6?
A. Obeyed. B. Broke. C. Made. D. Bent.
34. Why does Reintem keep serving the bank?
A. To improve her skills. B. To win more customers.
C. To enjoy the helpfulness. D. To learn new techniques.
35. How does the writer introduce the bank?
A. By using specific data. B. By giving examples.
C. By referring to common knowledge. D. By using comparison and contrast.

Everyone is aware that taking good care of our bodies can prevent many medical problems from occurring later. However, we often have less awareness of preventative actions we should take to help with mental health problems. While our mental health may be fine right now, many of us will struggle at some point. 36 It’s impossible to get through life without challenges, but our mental health prevention habits can help us get through difficult times. 37
Keep active. The more active you physically, mentally and socially are, the higher the level of your mental wellness is likely to be. So go for walks and learn something new. There are many other ways to be active. 38
Be connected. Regular involvement in social activities with supportive friends and family improves your ability to handle disappointments, and everything else life throws at you. 39 But you can be involved in any manner; even volunteering for an organization can help you be more social.
40 The nature of these activities varies widely from person to person. The key is to identify what gives your life meaning. Volunteering, coaching, teaching, etc. all can contribute to increasing your sense of confidence and satisfaction with life. Many activities can address more than one. Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to buy the latest Speedster X bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike, he had been packing sandwiches to school the last three months.
“How can I get that fifty dollars?” he thought to himself. His mind was wondering when Mother’s voice disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son, Shawn, will cycle to school next week. Could you show him the shortcut to school later? It’s Saturday anyway!” Hearing this, Kareem had no option but to obey it, He knew Mother had probably already volunteered his service to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here’s a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added Mother.
Kareem’s grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He opened the envelope and pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty dollar note slipped out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving the note in the air, he shouted happily, “Enough money for my bike!”
At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished this task, the sooner he could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel (松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed across the road so suddenly that the boys knocked into each other and fell down heavily. Kareem said regretfully, “I forgot to warn you about the squirrel population here.” As Kareem was lifting up his broken bike, Shawn cried anxiously, “Oh, my poor bike! It’s completely broken.”
Watching Shawn carrying the disabled bike home in silence, Kareem hurried to the bike shop for his dream bike. The sign “Half Price for Old Models” in the shop attracted his eyes.

Hello, everyone. I feel honored to be here to talk to you on Be sporty,Be healthy.
We students are heavily burdened with schoolwork and thus spare a little time of regular physical exercise. However, we all need a sound body. So I suggest we fit exercise into our busy schedule, making it a part of our daily routine. Put down our books to stretch our arms from time to time, do some jogging and jumping every day. If we are able to make exercising our life habits, we will surely benefit from it both physically and mentally.
That's all. Thank you.

“A Speedster X bike or two old models?” Kareem hesitated. He thought to himself, “Whatever happened was not my fault. I’m buying Speedster X anyway.” However, as the image of Shawn and his disabled bike flashed before him repeatedly, he felt a shiver running down his body. An inner voice insisted that he should reach out a helping hand. Just at that moment, his initial guilt gave way to a sense of responsibility. After a quick mental calculation, he decided to buy two old models.
“Hi!” Kareem appeared at Shawn’s door cheerfully and asked, “Want to ride together?” Shawn got annoyed at the silly question. He moved his lips as if to say something but before he could say anything, Kareem took a stride to the side, revealing two shiny identical bikes magically. “What... How come? No, it couldn’t be...”, Shawn beamed with excitement, tears clouding his eyes. Mother, who had witnessed the scene from the window, walked up to Kareem and patted his shoulder gently and playfully, “Son! I’m really proud of you.
