阅读理解Teachers don’t just educate students—they also act as problem-solvers, and sometimes, even social workers to help kids in need. To change that, since 2014, the Varkey Foundation has been honoring the world’s “real superhero” with a $1 million Global Teacher Prize each year. The prize of 2019 went to Peter Tabichi from Kenya, Africa. Tabichi beat 10,000 other teachers from 179 countries to win the $1 million prize. He began working as a teacher at a private school—one with state-of-the-art laboratories, a well-stocked library, and even a computer room. However, a field trip to the neighboring rural area made him realize his true calling was to help kids in under-served communities. In September, 2016, he joined Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village in a mountain area. With no library, a single science laboratory and one school computer, it was a far cry from Tabichi’s last school. To make matters worse, many of the students have to walk 7 kilometers to school each way. While these challenges would have led most people to leave, Tabichi faced them bravely.Realizing that being hungry does harm to poor students, the teacher began using as much as 80% of his monthly salary to buy food and supplies for them. Since there is little rain in the area, he also taught parents how to grow drought-resistant crops. Sometimes, he even paid for the plants to help them started.Tabichi is feeling happy now. School registration has nearly doubled since he started, from 200 to almost 400. In 2017, 16 of the 59 seniors went to college, while in 2018, the number rose to 26. Even more encouraging, girls are now doing better than boys in tests. The school’s headmaster said, “Mr. Tabichi is a teacher. He gives almost everything to education. In Tulum, Mexico, however, a very different train station is in the works.Tulum often has storms and strong winds. The terrible weather sometimes causes serious harm to people’s life, buildings and transportation systems here. So the new station will be built with the environment protection in mind. According to its design, the main supporting parts can protect the station against bad weather conditions and make the station last long time. The station’s special shape and open top allow fresh air to enter and move through it so that it is cool inside. They also let in natural light, which is useful for energy saving by reducing the need for air conditioning and lighting. The station is meant to coexist(共存)with the environment nearby. Around the station, there are plenty of plants and animals. Because of this, the station will be kept as small as possible. It is only to be only 200 meters long.Besides, the station’s design shows Mexico’s traditional art and ancient culture in an unusual way. By making full use of lines, shapes and light, the train station imitates the building of the Mayan culture. The local people Mayas are known for their use of lines and light in their art.The building of the station began in January 2022 and will likely to be finished by the end of 2023. Then, he took me to my cabin(房舱). It was a very comfortable bedroom and was next to his cabin. His cabin had an instrument panel(仪表板), and on this he could see everything that he needed to know to sail the Nautilus.②He told me that he had found a way to make electricity using salt and mercury(). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps()filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise. I was surprised to find that the Nautilus even had a small dinghy(小艇). Captain Nemo could enter the dinghy from the Nautilus while it was underwater and go to the surface. Then, the Nautilus would come up to collect him. As we walked to the engine room(发动机舱), we passed the large kitchen and crew(船员)room. The door of the crew room was closed, so I could not see how many men were asked to work on the Nautilus.③Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. It was difficult to understand how the tanks, rudders and batteries worked. However, I had to believe it because the engine was working! The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical(圆柱形的)shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. A pilot sat in a small room with strong windows, and a powerful electric light showed him where he was going.④“It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed.⑤“I love it as if it were my child.” he replied.⑥“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. At that time, she was given a harmful drug mistakenly, which damaged her hearing. So Jiang’s parents taught her to learn vocalization and lip reading. When Jiang learn to talk, she used her hands to feel the vibration(震动)of her parents’ vocal cords(声带). When reading Pinyin, she carefully looked at the lips of other people’s pronunciations to know the formation of each syllable. Learning a single word can take at least 1000 practice attempts for Jiang, and different people having different mouth movements added difficulty when it came to lip reading.Through lip reading and self-study, she was able to keep up with learning and was accepted by Jilin University School of Pharmacy with a high score of 615. In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD candidate at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences.Jiang’s story is one of victory over difficulty.
