As a cllege student in Bstn, I frmed the habit f buying used bks. I enjy the hunt, the gd price and the unrecgnized treasures. I find ld textbks, ex-bestsellers, and bks n subjects I’ve never heard f and nw must learn all abut. I dn’t search fr rare bks, first editins, r leather-bund editins but bks that are wrth reading.
Rereading, fr me, is a pleasure during retirement. The theater and the cncert hall becme less appealing t me, alng with crwds. Staying alne and reading bks have becme extremely imprtant t me. Literature needs the flesh f experience t have its full effect. Different bks ffer me insights and ways f expressing that stuck in my mind as grains f sand in an yster nw shine like pearls. My taste in bks imprves with age.
While packing fr a mve, which ccurs at intervals f five t seven years, I clear my shelves and pick my bks. I abandn a few, later regret my decisins, and lk fr them again. Several years ag, I gt rid f bks related t my jb-architecture. Sme were design guides, reference bks, prduct catalgs, and things that went ut f date. Sme were histrical r centered n a perid r an architect. These had given me many hurs f pleasure. Will I ever pen their cvers again? Certainly. I held n t the red bulk f Sir Banister Fletcher’s A Histry f Architecture and bks n Paris, Rme, and Bstn.
I gave away drafting equipment and instruments. I threw ut rlls and rlls f paper, and ld drawings f prjects cmpleted lng ag, sme f which had even been damaged. This time, I stay put in a cttage that suits my status and I’ve mved n in spirit. Thugh its effects are nt always visible t the human eye, plastic is chking life n Earth. The prcess fr manufacturing plastic wrsens climate change, and the spreading f plastic in the envirnment has led t heartbreaking sights.
Then there came a daydream: Can we create smething that will cnsume it?
A new study suggests that an enzyme(酶)which targets plyethylene terephthalate (PET) — a widely-used substance fund in a majrity f cnsumer packaging prducts that cntains 12 percent f all glbal waste — culd make that scientific dream, which is als necessity, int a reality.
The key ingredient was n natural enzyme knwn as PETase, accrding t the paper published in the scientific jurnal Nature. Using a machine learning mdel, scientists at the University f Texas figured ut what changes wuld cause the enzyme t be able t quickly break dwn the targeted types f plastic waste.
“It has been a well-explred prblem in many industries, ” Hal AIper, a prfessr in Chemical Engineering, said, “Therefre, we feel that this part f the prblem is easily achievable in a shrt perid f time. The mre challenging aspect will be making enzyme break dwn n a large scale with mixed plastics waste. ”
This was nt the first effrt t slve the plastic pllutin prblem. In March 2016, Japanese researchers fund a bacteria that wuld “eat“ the plastic until it turned int sludge(泥浆). Last year, scientists at the University f Edinburgh annunced that E. Cli, a cmmn bacterium, culd be used t change PET int a kind f material, which might be able t be safely cnsumed by humans.
Janna Sadler, a bitechnlgy prfessr at the University f Edinburgh, characterized the new enzyme as the “fastest enzyme reprted t date” in terms f the speed f breaking dwn different plastics. “This makes it a very prmising technlgical develpment in the field, and demnstrates the better adapted usage f this enzyme, ” Sadler said.

D. Making the enzyme disslve plastics massively.
30. Why are the examples mentined in Paragraph 6?
A. T evaluate the scientists’ previus effrts.
B. T intrduce sme similar bilgical means.
C. T prve the pssibility f recycling plastics.
D. T stress the imprtance f plastic-eating bacteria.
31. Which wrd best describes Sadler’s attitude t the enzyme?
A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
C. Optimistic. D. Critical.

Yu lk up at the sky n a clear and dark night, yu’ll see mre stars than yur eyes can cunt. Mst f these stars have planets, similar t ur wn, rbiting them. With s many celestial bdies flating ut in space, yu can’t help but questin whether ther frms f life exist in the universe. And if that’s the case, is it pssible t cntact them?
Science is still smewhat divided n this issue. Currently, n evidence exists t suggest that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet with an estimated ne trillin planets in ur galaxy alne, it seems highly likely that Earthlings aren’t the nly intelligent creatures ut there. Sme claim that life can nly develp under perfect circumstances, and Earth is perhaps the nly example f this. Other scientists bject t this claim, and pint ut that even n Earth, life can find a way under the mst extreme circumstances.
Sme peple believe that aliens have already visited ur planet, but this infrmatin is being kept secret by gvernments. The mst famus incident f this kind ccurred in Rswell, New Mexic in 1947. On that date, many residents reprted seeing an unusual flying disc streak thrugh the sky, befre it crashed in a field. When the military heard abut the crash, they quickly sealed ff the area. A few hurs later, the army base annunced that it had recvered a flying disk. Shrtly after, this statement was retracted and it was said that it was a weather balln that crashed. Hwever, years later ne lcal mrtician even claimed that the military had him secretly perfrm an autpsy n a dead alien bdy.
Others believe that there certainly are ther life frms ut there, but the distance between us is t great. Even if we culd smehw create a spaceship that travels at the speed f light, it wuld still prbably take several lifetimes t reach them. Then again, we might never have t d this if aliens reach us first.
32. Why d sme scientists think there is life n ther planets?
A. Because an unusual flying disc was ever witnessed.
B. Because life exists despite extreme cnditins as thse n the Earth d.
C. Because the gvernment’s statement seemed suspicius.
D. Because there are a great number f planets in the universe.
33. What des the underlined wrd “retracted” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Examined again t guarantee the crrectness.
B. Emphasized again t persuade peple.
C. Frmally taken back what has been said.
D. Seriusly criticized due t pr evidence
34. Which f the fllwing might be the best title fr the text?
A. Are we alne in the universe?
B. Is it pssible t cntact aliens?
C. Intelligent life in the universe.
D. Planets flating ut in space.
35. Hw des the authr sund in the passage?
A. Objective. B. Humrus.
C. Cautius. D. Anxius.
